Chapter 9: The Child Nobody Knew About

The sentence stayed in the air.

*She deserves to know who her child really was.*

Nia couldn’t move.

She couldn’t even breathe properly.

Her eyes stayed fixed on Adrian.

Not Vanessa.

Not the doctor.

Him.

Because somehow, every secret led back to him.

“What does that mean?””

Her voice was barely audible.

Adrian looked at her.

“Nia…”

“No.””

She shook her head.

“Do not say my name like that.””

The pain in her voice made him stop.

“Explain.””

Adrian looked destroyed.

“I can’t.””

Nia stared at him.

“You can’t?””

A bitter laugh escaped.

“That’s your answer?””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Nia, please.””

Nia turned.

“Please what?””

Vanessa cried silently.

“Please understand.””

Nia looked at her.

“You are carrying a baby connected to my medical records.””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“That’s not something I can simply understand.””

Dr. Brooks placed another file on the table.

“This is why I came tonight.””

Nia looked at it.

“What is it?””

“The complete clinic report.””

Adrian immediately said:

“No.””

Dr. Brooks looked at him.

“You lost the right to decide what she knows.””

The words hit hard.

Nia opened the file.

The pages inside were older.

Medical records.

Consent forms.

Laboratory reports.

She scanned them.

Then stopped.

Her eyes locked onto a date.

A date from three years ago.

The same week as her accident.

“What is this?””

Dr. Brooks answered carefully.

“After your accident, doctors discovered you were pregnant.””

Nia’s hand trembled.

She already knew that.

But hearing it again made it real.

“The pregnancy was unstable.””

Nia swallowed.

“And?””

The doctor looked at her.

“You were unconscious for several days.””

The memories came again.

Bright hospital lights.

Machines.

Voices.

Someone crying.

Adrian.

“During that time,” Dr. Brooks continued, “Adrian made a decision.””

Nia looked up.

“What decision?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Evelyn quietly said:

“He signed the papers.””

Nia turned.

“What papers?””

Evelyn looked ashamed.

“The fertility preservation documents.””

Nia frowned.

“I don’t understand.””

Dr. Brooks explained.

“When doctors believed your pregnancy might not survive, Adrian authorized the preservation of genetic material connected to the pregnancy.””

Nia stared.

“Why?””

Adrian finally spoke.

“Because I thought I was going to lose you.””

The answer sounded real.

For once.

Nia looked at him.

“And after that?””

His eyes filled.

“After that, everything became complicated.””

“Complicated.””

She repeated the word.

“The word everyone uses when they don’t want to say the truth.””

Adrian looked down.

The doctor continued.

“The clinic made a mistake.””

Nia looked at her.

“What mistake?””

A pause.

“The samples were mislabeled.””

The room became silent.

Nia looked between them.

“Whose samples?””

Nobody answered.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Mine.””

Nia looked at her.

Vanessa wiped her face.

“When I went to the clinic, they told me there was already a compatible sample available.””

Nia’s eyes widened.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at Adrian.

“He knew.””

Adrian closed his eyes.

Nia turned toward him.

“You knew?””

His voice broke.

“I found out after.””

“After what?””

“After Vanessa was already pregnant.””

Nia stared.

“You knew she was carrying a child connected to what happened to us.””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing.””

He couldn’t answer.

Because there was no explanation.

Nia walked away from him.

Every step felt heavier.

Her marriage.

Her memories.

Her entire understanding of the last three years.

Everything was changing.

“You let me believe I lost everything.””

Adrian’s eyes filled.

“Nia.””

“You let me mourn a child I didn’t even remember.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

She turned sharply.

“From my own life?””

Silence.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“I’m sorry.””

Nia looked at her.

For the first time, she saw Vanessa differently.

Not innocent.

Not forgiven.

But also not the only villain.

Everyone in this room had played a role.

Everyone had hidden something.

The ballroom doors opened again.

This time, nobody moved.

A man entered carrying a small black folder.

He looked directly at Adrian.

“Mr. Cole.””

Adrian froze.

The man walked closer.

“I was told to give this to Nia only if the truth came out.””

Nia stared.

“Who sent you?””

The man handed her the folder.

She opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

An old hospital photograph.

Her.

Three years ago.

Holding a newborn baby.

Her face was exhausted.

But she was smiling.

Nia’s hands shook.

“That’s impossible.””

The man looked at her.

“There’s one more thing.””

He placed another document on top.

A birth record.

Nia looked at the name.

Then her entire body went cold.

Because the baby’s name was one she had never heard before.

But the mother listed on the document was unmistakable.

*Nia Cole.*

She looked up slowly.

“Adrian…”

He was crying now.

Not hiding it.

Not controlling it.

Just broken.

And before anyone could speak, Nia whispered:

“If I had a child…”

May you like

Her eyes moved to Vanessa’s stomach.

“Then whose baby is she carrying now?””
