Chapter 2: The Secret Hidden in Plain Sight

Adrian’s fingers tightened around the edge of Nia’s phone.

For a moment, the confident businessman disappeared.

The man who negotiated million-dollar deals.

The man who stood in front of cameras and spoke about success.

The man who always seemed impossible to shake.

He was gone.

In his place was someone staring at a piece of evidence he never expected to see.

Vanessa noticed first.

Her smile disappeared.

“What is that?”” she asked.

Nobody answered.

The ballroom remained frozen.

Nia stood in the center of it all, her black gown ruined by the wine stain, her hair still perfectly arranged, her expression strangely calm.

That calm frightened Adrian more than anger would have.

“Nia,” Adrian said quietly.

She looked at him.

“Yes?””

“Where did you get this?””

The question almost made her smile.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was exactly what she expected him to ask.

Not “Is this real?””

Not “How did you find out?””

Not “I’m sorry.””

Only where.

Nia crossed her arms.

“Does it matter?””

Adrian looked back at the phone.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His jaw tightened.

“Because this is private.””

A few guests exchanged looks.

Nia shook her head slowly.

“Private?””

She glanced around the room.

“Interesting word.””

Vanessa stepped between them.

“Adrian, she’s trying to ruin tonight.””

Nia looked at Vanessa.

“No. I’m trying to understand how you’re carrying his child.””

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“Because he loves me.””

The sentence was immediate.

Too immediate.

Nia noticed.

So did Evelyn.

The older woman’s eyes moved between them.

“Adrian,” Evelyn said carefully, “what is she talking about?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

That was the first crack.

Evelyn saw it.

“You had a procedure?””

Adrian looked away.

“Nia is exaggerating.””

Nia raised an eyebrow.

“Am I?””

She stepped closer.

“You told me three years ago that you couldn’t have children.””

Adrian’s face changed.

Only for a second.

But Nia saw it.

“You remember that conversation,” she said.

He looked at her.

“Of course I do.””

“I remember it too.””

The memory sat between them.

Three years earlier.

A quiet hospital room.

Rain tapping against the window.

Adrian holding her hand while a doctor explained their options.

They had cried together.

They had promised each other they would face it together.

Nia swallowed.

“I remember you telling me that if we couldn’t have a baby naturally, we would find another way.””

Adrian said nothing.

“I remember you saying we were a team.””

Still nothing.

Vanessa looked uncomfortable now.

The confidence she walked in with was fading.

She tightened her grip on the ultrasound photo.

“Nia, whatever happened years ago doesn’t change what’s happening now.””

Nia looked at her.

“You’re right.””

A pause.

“It doesn’t.””

Then she pointed toward the ultrasound.

“But it raises a question.””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“What question?””

Nia looked at Adrian.

“The one nobody here wants to ask.””

The silence became unbearable.

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Stop playing games.””

Nia turned toward her.

“I’m not.””

Her voice stayed steady.

“I’m asking how a man who was medically unable to have children three years ago suddenly became a father.””

Adrian finally snapped.

“Enough.””

The entire room looked at him.

His face was red.

Not from embarrassment.

From anger.

“You think you can humiliate me in front of everyone?””

Nia stared at him.

“You did that yourself.””

Vanessa reached for his arm.

“Adrian, say something.””

He looked at her.

And for the first time that night, Vanessa looked uncertain.

“Tell her,” Vanessa whispered.

Adrian didn’t respond.

That silence was louder than any confession.

Nia watched the two of them.

The way Vanessa searched his face.

The way Adrian avoided her eyes.

There was something else.

Something hidden underneath the betrayal.

Something neither of them wanted exposed.

Evelyn noticed too.

She moved closer to Adrian.

“What aren’t you telling us?””

Adrian looked at his mother.

Then at Vanessa.

Then back at the phone.

His voice dropped.

“This was three years ago.””

Nia nodded.

“Yes.””

Vanessa’s breathing changed.

A tiny reaction.

Almost invisible.

Almost.

But Nia saw it.

“You knew,” Nia whispered.

Vanessa looked at her.

“Knew what?””

Nia took a step forward.

“That date means something to you.””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“You’re reaching.””

“Am I?””

Nia looked around the ballroom.

“At first, I thought you came here to hurt me.””

She glanced at the wine stain.

“I thought this was about making me feel small.””

Then she looked at the ultrasound photo.

“But now I think you came here because you believed you were protected.””

Adrian’s face went pale.

Evelyn stared at him.

“Protected by who?””

Nobody answered.

A phone suddenly rang.

Everyone looked around.

Then Adrian reached into his pocket.

His own phone.

The screen lit up.

A name appeared.

His expression changed instantly.

Nia saw it.

And she knew whoever was calling had something to do with the secret Adrian had spent years hiding.

Adrian looked at the screen.

May you like

Then he whispered:

“No…”
