Chapter 3: The Call Nobody Wanted
The name on Adrian’s phone remained glowing in the darkness of the ballroom.
He didn’t answer.
That was what made everyone afraid.
Adrian Cole never hesitated.
He answered investors within seconds.
He returned calls before people could leave voicemails.
He controlled everything around him.
But now, standing beneath crystal chandeliers with hundreds of eyes watching him, he looked like a man trapped.
“Who is it?”” Evelyn asked.
Adrian locked the screen.
“Nobody.””
Nia almost laughed.
“Nobody?””
She looked at him.
“You just turned white over nobody?””
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“Not here.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Adrian, we need to leave.””
Nia watched her.
That was interesting.
Not angry.
Not confused.
Worried.
Very worried.
“Why?”” Nia asked.
Vanessa looked at her.
“Why what?””
“Why do you need to leave?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
The silence told Nia more than words could.
Evelyn crossed her arms.
“I want an explanation.””
Adrian looked around.
The guests were still watching.
The charity event he planned for months had transformed into the biggest scandal of his life.
But Nia realized something.
The scandal wasn’t what scared him.
The truth was.
Adrian walked closer to her.
“Give me the phone.””
Nia held it back.
“No.””
“Nia.””
“No.””
His voice lowered.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””
She stared at him.
“I understand exactly what I’m doing.””
“You’re destroying everything.””
Nia looked around the room.
“Everything?””
Her voice cracked slightly.
“You destroyed our marriage before you ever admitted it was over.””
For the first time, Adrian looked away.
That hurt.
Because it confirmed something she had already known.
He didn’t regret hurting her.
He regretted being exposed.
Vanessa touched her stomach.
The gesture was small.
But everyone noticed.
Nia looked at the ultrasound photo again.
“How long have you known?””
Vanessa froze.
“Known what?””
“That something was wrong.””
Vanessa’s eyes moved toward Adrian.
Just for a second.
But enough.
Nia saw it.
“You asked him.””
Adrian immediately said, “Stop.””
Nia ignored him.
“You asked him before tonight.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
Evelyn looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
Nia turned toward her.
“It means Vanessa didn’t come here to surprise him.””
She looked at Adrian.
“She came here because she already knew something.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“You’re making assumptions.””
“Then prove me wrong.””
The challenge hung in the air.
Adrian opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Evelyn slowly removed her hand from her purse.
“Adrian.””
Her voice was different now.
No longer controlling.
Concerned.
“What happened three years ago?””
Adrian looked at his mother.
Then at Vanessa.
Then at Nia.
And Nia saw the exact moment he realized he had run out of places to hide.
The ballroom doors opened.
A security employee hurried inside.
He walked directly toward Adrian.
“Mr. Cole.””
Adrian turned.
The man leaned closer and whispered something.
Whatever he said changed Adrian’s face completely.
“What?”” Adrian asked.
The employee swallowed.
“She said if you don’t answer the call, she’ll send the documents herself.””
Nobody moved.
Nia felt the room shift.
Documents.
Not rumors.
Not accusations.
Documents.
Adrian looked toward his phone again.
The same unknown caller.
Vanessa stepped backward.
“No.””
It was the first time she sounded afraid.
Evelyn noticed.
“Vanessa?””
The young woman looked at Adrian.
“Tell me you didn’t…”
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“Don’t say another word.””
Nia watched them carefully.
There it was.
The truth hiding underneath the betrayal.
Not a simple affair.
Not just a secret child.
Something bigger.
Something they had both been protecting.
Adrian finally answered the phone.
Everyone held their breath.
A voice came through the speaker.
Nia couldn’t hear the words.
But she heard Adrian’s response.
His face lost all color.
“You can’t do this.””
A pause.
Then:
“You promised.””
Nia felt a chill.
Adrian listened again.
Then slowly looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
The phone slipped slightly in Adrian’s hand.
The powerful businessman.
The perfect husband.
The man everyone admired.
Completely broken.
Nia took one step closer.
“What did they say?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
He only stared at Vanessa.
And Vanessa clutched the ultrasound photo tighter than ever.
Because whatever was coming next was bigger than a family scandal.
It was the secret that could destroy them all.
May you like
And then Adrian whispered the words that made Evelyn’s face go completely still.
“It’s not supposed to be possible…”
