Chapter 11: The Boy Adrian Hid

Nia couldn’t move.

Closer than you think.

The words repeated inside her head.

Her son was alive.

Somewhere.

Existing in the same world.

Breathing.

Growing.

Waiting.

And she had never known.

“Where is he?””

Her voice was barely a whisper.

Celeste looked at her with sadness.

“I need you to understand something.””

Nia shook her head.

“No.””

The answer surprised everyone.

“I don’t need another explanation.””

She stepped forward.

“I need my child.””

Adrian looked at her.

“Nia, please.””

She turned toward him.

“Please what?””

His face crumbled.

“I was trying to keep him safe.””

“You kept him from me.””

The words destroyed him.

Because they were true.

Celeste opened the folder.

“Three years ago, after the birth, there were concerns about custody.””

Nia frowned.

“Custody?””

Adrian looked away.

“Because of the accident?””

Celeste nodded.

“The doctors questioned whether you were capable of making decisions immediately after waking.””

Nia felt sick.

“I was his mother.””

“Yes.””

“Then why wasn’t I told?””

Nobody answered.

Celeste looked at Adrian.

“He made the decision.””

Nia slowly turned.

“Adrian.””

He looked at her.

“I thought you were going to die.””

The emotion in his voice was raw.

“I thought I was going to lose you.””

Nia stared.

“And you decided losing me meant taking my child away?””

“No.””

“Then what was it?””

He swallowed.

“I was afraid.””

There it was again.

Fear.

The excuse behind every choice he made.

Nia stepped closer.

“Your fear destroyed my life.””

Adrian looked down.

“I know.””

The admission surprised her.

No defense.

No argument.

Just acceptance.

Celeste placed a photo on the table.

Nia looked down.

A little boy.

About three years old.

Curly hair.

Bright eyes.

A small smile.

Her breath disappeared.

She touched the photograph.

“That’s him?””

Celeste nodded.

“Yes.””

Nia’s fingers moved over the picture.

She searched the child’s face.

For herself.

For Adrian.

For something familiar.

A tear rolled down.

“What’s his name?””

Celeste hesitated.

“Adrian named him.””

Nia looked up.

Her expression changed.

“No.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“Nia.””

“No.””

She looked at him.

“You named him without me?””

His voice was quiet.

“I wanted him to have something from us.””

Nia looked back at the photo.

“What did you name him?””

Adrian whispered:

“Noah.””

The name settled into her heart.

Noah.

Her son.

A child she had never held.

A name she had never spoken.

A life she had missed.

“Why didn’t you bring him to me?””

Adrian looked broken.

“Because there was a threat.””

“What threat?””

Celeste answered.

“The person who contacted Adrian tonight.””

Nia looked at her.

“Who is that?””

Celeste’s expression became serious.

“Someone who believes Noah belongs to them.””

The room went cold.

Nia looked at Adrian.

“Who?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

Celeste opened another document.

“Three years ago, the clinic made a mistake.””

She pointed to the paper.

“But mistakes don’t happen without consequences.””

Nia read the document.

Her eyes widened.

“This says…”

She stopped.

The words felt impossible.

Dr. Brooks looked at her.

“Say it.””

Nia’s voice shook.

“This says Noah’s genetic material was connected to another patient.””

Celeste nodded.

“And that patient?””

Nia looked up.

Nobody wanted to answer.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Me.””

Nia stared at her.

“No.””

Vanessa began crying.

“I didn’t know.””

“You didn’t know?””

“I found out after the pregnancy.””

Nia looked at Adrian.

“And you?””

His silence answered.

“You knew.””

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.””

The room became unbearable.

Nia stepped back.

“You knew my son and her baby were connected.””

“Yes.””

“And you still let me believe I lost everything.””

“I was trying to fix it.””

“When?””

His face fell.

Nia’s voice rose.

“When were you going to fix it?””

No answer.

The question destroyed him.

Then Noah’s photograph slipped from Nia’s hand.

She picked it up carefully.

“I want to see him.””

Adrian looked at her.

“Nia.””

“I want to see my son.””

Celeste nodded.

“There’s something else you should know before you do.””

Nia looked at her.

“What?””

Celeste hesitated.

“Noah doesn’t know you’re his mother.””

The words hurt differently.

Because they were not about secrets.

They were about time.

Three years.

Three birthdays.

Three years of someone else hearing his first words.

Someone else holding him when he cried.

Nia looked at Adrian.

“Who does he think I am?””

Nobody answered.

Then Celeste said quietly:

“He thinks you’re the woman in the photograph.””

Nia frowned.

“What photograph?””

Celeste looked at Adrian.

“The one he keeps beside his bed.””

Adrian closed his eyes.

Nia stared.

“What photograph?””

Celeste opened the final page.

A picture fell out.

Nia picked it up.

It was from before the accident.

A photo of her and Adrian.

And written in childish handwriting underneath:

*Mommy and Daddy.*

Nia’s heart broke.

May you like

Because her son knew her face.

But he didn’t know her.
