Chapter 8: The Truth in the Envelope
Nobody spoke.
Not even Adrian.
The silence was heavier than any confession.
Nia stared at Vanessa.
The woman who had walked into the gala smiling.
The woman who had thrown wine on her.
The woman who had announced her pregnancy like she was claiming a victory.
Now she looked terrified.
“Say it,” Nia whispered.
Vanessa looked down.
“I can’t.””
Nia’s expression hardened.
“You came here to destroy my life.””
“That’s not why.””
“Then why?””
Vanessa looked at Adrian.
That answer was enough.
Nia laughed quietly.
“Of course.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“Nia, listen to me.””
“No.””
She turned toward him.
“I have listened for three years.””
The room went quiet.
“I listened when you said you were tired.””
She looked at him.
“I listened when you said your work mattered.””
Another step.
“I listened when you told me we were rebuilding.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“But you were never rebuilding anything.””
Adrian looked broken.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“Stop saying that.””
Her voice cut through the room.
“Protection does not look like this.””
Dr. Brooks opened the file again.
“There are records here.””
Vanessa looked nervous.
“Camille.””
The doctor looked at her.
“You knew the consequences.””
Vanessa swallowed.
Nia noticed.
“You knew her?””
Dr. Brooks nodded.
“Yes.””
“How?””
A pause.
“I treated both of you.””
Nia looked confused.
“Both?””
The doctor looked at Vanessa.
“Yes.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
The truth was finally catching up.
“I was a patient at the same clinic.””
Nia looked at her.
“The fertility clinic?””
Vanessa nodded.
“But I wasn’t there for Adrian.””
Adrian’s face changed.
“Vanessa.””
“No.””
She looked at him.
“I’m done protecting you.””
That sentence shocked everyone.
Nia watched as the woman who had seemed so powerful finally broke.
“I didn’t plan any of this.””
Nia stared.
“You didn’t plan to sleep with my husband?””
Vanessa looked away.
“No.””
The answer was honest.
And somehow that made it worse.
“I was already involved with Adrian before I knew about you.””
Nia’s face went cold.
“But you knew about me.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
The admission hung in the air.
“Then why?””
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
“Because Adrian told me you two were separated.””
Nia looked at Adrian.
“You told her that?””
He didn’t respond.
Another lie.
Another crack.
Vanessa continued.
“I believed him.””
Nia looked at her.
“You believed him enough to have a baby?””
Vanessa touched her stomach.
Her voice became quiet.
“I believed the baby was the only good thing left.””
Adrian looked away.
Nia noticed.
“Adrian.””
He looked at her.
“What?””
“You knew.””
His silence returned.
She stepped closer.
“You knew about this pregnancy before tonight.””
“Yes.””
“When?””
He hesitated.
“Two months ago.””
Nia stared.
Two months.
Two months of smiling at her.
Two months of pretending everything was normal.
Two months of letting her believe their marriage was only struggling.
“You looked me in the eyes every day.””
Adrian’s voice cracked.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
No answer.
“After the baby was born?””
Still nothing.
Nia nodded slowly.
“Exactly.””
Dr. Brooks moved toward the table.
“There’s something else.””
Nia looked at her.
“What?””
The doctor pointed to the document.
“The fertility procedure Adrian had three years ago.””
“Yes?””
“It wasn’t a normal procedure.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“Nia.””
“No.””
She looked at him.
“Let her finish.””
Dr. Brooks continued.
“After the accident, Adrian requested access to your medical records.””
Nia frowned.
“Why?””
“He was told your condition could affect future pregnancies.””
Nia looked confused.
“My condition?””
The doctor hesitated.
Then handed her another paper.
Nia read it.
Her hands went still.
“What does this mean?””
Nobody answered.
She looked at Adrian.
“You knew something was wrong with me?””
His face tightened.
“I was trying to find answers.””
“You knew?””
“I didn’t know everything.””
“But you knew enough to hide it.””
Adrian looked away.
That was enough.
Nia placed the paper down.
“What does this have to do with Vanessa’s baby?””
Dr. Brooks looked at Adrian.
Then Vanessa.
Then finally Nia.
“The baby’s DNA matches a sample from the clinic.””
Nia waited.
“But not the one you think.””
The room went silent.
Adrian whispered:
“No.””
Nia turned toward him.
“What?””
Dr. Brooks looked directly at her.
“Adrian is not the only person whose medical records were altered three years ago.””
Nia felt frozen.
“What are you saying?””
The doctor opened the final document.
“There was a mistake at the clinic.””
A pause.
“A mistake that connected three people who should never have been connected.””
Nia stared.
“Who?””
Before Dr. Brooks could answer, Adrian’s phone rang.
Again.
This time, the screen showed a message.
He read it.
Then immediately dropped the phone.
Nia looked down.
The message was visible.
*You can keep lying to her. But she deserves to know who her child really was.*
Nia’s breath stopped.
Her child.
Not Vanessa’s.
Her child.
She looked at Adrian.
“What does that mean?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
May you like
And Vanessa began crying.
Because she knew the truth.
