Chapter 10: The Last Thing She Left Behind
Darius couldn’t breathe.
Not because of fear.
Because of recognition.
The object in the stranger’s hand caught the dim emergency lighting.
A small silver necklace.
A necklace Darius had not seen in years.
A necklace that belonged to his sister.
His entire body went still.
“No…”
The word escaped before he could stop it.
The person standing at the end of the hallway watched his reaction carefully.
“You remember.””
Darius stepped forward.
“Where did you get that?””
The stranger didn’t answer.
Instead, they walked closer.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like they knew one wrong movement would make everyone panic.
The guests gathered behind Darius.
Nia held Ava close.
Simone stood frozen.
Marcus looked like he already understood what was happening.
That bothered Darius more than anything.
“Marcus.””
The name came out cold.
Marcus looked at him.
“What?””
“You know who this is.””
Marcus didn’t respond.
Darius’s eyes narrowed.
“That’s not a question.””
Marcus looked away.
And that was enough.
Darius felt anger rising again.
Another secret.
Another person who knew more than him.
“Who are they?””
The stranger finally spoke.
“My name is Elena.””
Darius stared.
The name meant nothing.
But Simone reacted.
Her face changed instantly.
“You.””
The room became silent.
Darius turned toward Simone.
“You know her?””
Simone nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“How?””
Elena answered for her.
“She knew me because your sister trusted me.””
Darius felt his chest tighten.
“My sister?””
Elena nodded.
“She was trying to protect you.””
Darius looked at the necklace.
“No.””
His voice became firmer.
“No one gets to say that anymore.””
He stepped forward.
“Everyone keeps using my sister’s name like it explains everything.””
His eyes moved from Elena to Simone to Marcus.
“But nobody tells me what actually happened.””
Elena looked down.
“You deserve the truth.””
“Then give it to me.””
She held out the necklace.
Darius didn’t take it.
“Why do you have this?””
“Because she gave it to me the night she disappeared.””
The words hit the room.
Darius stopped.
The night.
Everyone knew the story.
The night his sister vanished.
The night his family changed forever.
The night he spent years trying to forget.
“You were there?””
Elena nodded.
“Yes.””
Darius’s hands tightened.
“Then why didn’t you come forward?””
Elena looked at Simone.
“Because your sister asked me not to.””
Darius looked at Simone.
“Why?””
Simone looked broken.
“Because she knew you would blame yourself.””
“That makes no sense.””
“It does.””
Simone stepped closer.
“Your sister knew you.””
Darius shook his head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Her voice trembled.
“She knew you would sacrifice everything to fix something that wasn’t your fault.””
The hallway remained quiet.
Darius hated that part of him wanted to believe her.
But he couldn’t.
Not after everything.
Elena reached into her coat pocket.
She pulled out another item.
A small flash drive.
Darius stared.
“What is that?””
“Something your sister left.””
“For me?””
Elena nodded.
“She said only you should see it.””
Darius looked at Marcus.
Then Simone.
Then Elena.
“How long have you had this?””
“Years.””
His expression hardened.
“Years?””
Elena nodded.
“I was waiting.””
“For what?””
“For Simone to tell you herself.””
Darius laughed bitterly.
“So you all agreed to wait until my entire life collapsed?””
Nobody answered.
Because there was no defense.
Darius took the flash drive.
His fingers shook slightly.
Not from fear.
From the weight of it.
Ava stepped closer.
“Dad?””
He looked down.
“I’m okay.””
But he wasn’t.
Not even close.
Nia watched him carefully.
“Maybe we should leave.””
Darius looked at the room.
At the guests.
At the people who had come to celebrate.
The celebration was gone.
All that remained were questions.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
Darius held the flash drive.
“We’re finishing this.””
Simone looked worried.
“Darius…”
“I spent years wondering what happened to my sister.””
He looked at her.
“I’m not spending another minute wondering what everyone else knew.””
Elena nodded.
“She wanted you to see it alone.””
Darius shook his head.
“No more secrets.””
He looked at Ava.
Then Nia.
“I’m done letting people decide what I can handle.””
He turned toward the office.
The room followed.
Not because he asked.
Because everyone needed answers.
But before he reached the doorway, his phone buzzed.
Another message.
Unknown number.
Everyone watched.
Darius opened it.
One sentence.
*“If you play that video, you’ll discover why your sister disappeared.””*
His face changed.
Because below the message was a second line.
A name.
The sender’s name.
May you like
And it was impossible.
Because the sender was someone who was supposed to be dead.
