Chapter 7: The Face From His Past
Darius stared at the photograph inside the box.
The world around him became silent again.
Not the peaceful silence of a quiet room.
The kind of silence that comes when a person realizes the foundation beneath their life may have never been solid.
His fingers tightened around the old picture.
The edges were worn.
The colors had faded.
But the faces were clear.
His face.
And the face of the person standing beside him.
Someone he had not seen in years.
Someone he had buried deep in his memory.
“Darius?””
Simone’s voice came from behind him.
He didn’t answer.
Because he couldn’t.
His eyes remained locked on the photograph.
The person beside him was smiling.
Happy.
Young.
Before mistakes.
Before secrets.
Before everything changed.
Darius slowly turned the picture around.
“What is this?””
Nobody responded.
His voice became colder.
“I asked what this is.””
Simone stepped closer.
“Darius…”
He looked at her.
“No.””
The pain in his voice stopped her.
“Don’t say my name like you understand what I’m feeling right now.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I do understand.””
“No, you don’t.””
He looked back at the box.
“Because if you did, you would have told me.””
Marcus stood quietly near the doorway.
Darius noticed.
“You knew about this.””
Marcus didn’t deny it.
“Yes.””
The answer made Darius turn sharply.
“You knew?””
Marcus nodded.
“I knew there were things from your past that Simone was protecting.””
“Protecting?””
Darius laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps using that word.””
He held up the photograph.
“This doesn’t feel like protection.””
Simone lowered her eyes.
“It wasn’t supposed to hurt you.””
“But it did.””
The room went still.
Darius looked at the box again.
Inside were dozens of items.
Old letters.
Documents.
Photographs.
Things carefully collected and hidden away.
Not random memories.
A history.
A secret history.
He picked up one of the letters.
The handwriting was familiar.
Too familiar.
His stomach tightened.
“Who wrote these?””
Simone hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
Darius looked at her.
“You know.””
She whispered.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Her lips trembled.
Then she finally said the name.
A name that made every person in the room uncomfortable.
Darius closed his eyes.
Because hearing it out loud made it real.
“That’s impossible.””
Simone shook her head.
“I wish it was.””
He looked at Marcus.
“Why are you here?””
Marcus answered carefully.
“Because I knew eventually you would find out.””
“No.””
Darius stepped closer.
“You’re here because you were part of this.””
Marcus didn’t argue.
“I was.””
The honesty surprised him.
Darius studied his face.
“Then tell me everything.””
Marcus looked at Simone.
She shook her head.
“Don’t.””
Darius immediately noticed.
That single word.
That fear.
That desperation.
It told him there was still another layer.
“Why don’t you want him to talk?””
Simone looked away.
“Because some things cannot be undone.””
Darius looked at the box.
“Neither can betrayal.””
The word hit her.
She closed her eyes.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Darius pulled out another item.
A small envelope.
Different from the first.
Older.
His name was written on it.
But this time, the handwriting was not familiar.
He opened it carefully.
Inside was a single page.
He read the first sentence.
And his expression changed.
Marcus noticed.
“What does it say?””
Darius didn’t answer.
He read it again.
Then again.
The words seemed impossible.
Because the letter was not about Simone.
It was about him.
About a decision he had made years ago.
A decision he thought nobody else knew about.
A decision that changed someone else’s life.
Darius slowly lowered the paper.
“How did you get this?””
Simone whispered.
“Because it was meant to find you eventually.””
He looked at her.
“You kept this?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her voice broke.
“Because I was afraid you would hate me.””
Darius stared.
“After everything tonight, you’re worried about that?””
Simone looked at the box.
“No.””
She wiped her tears.
“I was worried you would hate yourself.””
The answer confused him.
Before he could ask another question, a sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Careful.
Everyone turned.
Ava appeared at the doorway.
Nia was behind her.
“Dad?””
Darius immediately moved toward her.
“Ava, you shouldn’t be here.””
She looked nervous.
“I heard voices.””
He softened.
“It’s okay.””
But Ava wasn’t looking at him.
She was looking inside the room.
At the box.
At the photographs.
Then she pointed.
“That person…”
Everyone followed her gaze.
Ava walked closer.
Her face changed.
“I know them.””
Darius froze.
“What?””
Ava looked at the photograph in his hand.
“I’ve seen that person before.””
The room went completely silent.
Darius slowly turned toward his daughter.
“Where?””
Ava looked at Simone.
May you like
And then she said something that made Simone lose all color in her face.
“In Mommy’s phone.””
