Chapter 12: The Person Behind the Curtain
Darius moved before anyone could stop him.
“Ava!””
His voice exploded through the room.
Everyone turned.
Nia grabbed his arm.
“What happened?””
He showed her the phone.
The photograph.
Ava outside.
Alone.
Nia’s face drained of color.
“She was with me.””
Darius looked at her.
“What?””
“I only looked away for a second.””
Fear filled her voice.
Darius didn’t blame her.
Not now.
Not when his daughter was missing.
He ran toward the hallway.
The entire mansion followed.
“Check every room!””
His command echoed through the house.
Guests scattered.
Security moved.
Lights turned on throughout the property.
But Darius barely noticed.
All he could think about was Ava.
His daughter.
The one person who had told him the truth when everyone else chose silence.
“Ava!””
His voice cracked.
No answer.
Then he heard something.
A small sound.
A voice.
“Dad?””
He turned.
At the end of the hallway.
Ava stood there.
Safe.
Darius ran.
He dropped to his knees and pulled her into his arms.
“Oh my God.””
Ava hugged him tightly.
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
He held her face.
“You don’t apologize.””
“I just wanted to find something.””
His heart sank.
“What?””
Ava pointed behind her.
“There.””
Everyone looked.
On a small table near the window was an envelope.
Darius stood slowly.
“What is that?””
Ava looked down.
“It was waiting for me.””
The sentence made everyone uncomfortable.
Darius walked toward the envelope.
Not quickly.
Carefully.
Because tonight had taught him something.
Nothing was random.
Nothing was innocent.
He picked it up.
His name was written on it.
Again.
But this time, the handwriting was different.
He opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
No note.
No explanation.
Just a picture.
Darius looked at it.
And his expression changed.
Because it showed him.
Years ago.
Standing beside his sister.
But in the background…
was Simone.
Watching them.
Darius slowly turned.
Simone looked at the photo.
And immediately started crying.
“You knew.””
The words came quietly.
Simone shook her head.
“No.””
“You knew my sister before you met me.””
“Yes.””
The answer finally came.
Darius felt numb.
“How?””
Simone wiped her face.
“Because she found me first.””
“Why?””
Simone looked at the photograph.
“Because she needed someone she could trust.””
Darius looked around.
At all the people.
All the secrets.
All the years lost.
“Then why did you pretend we met by chance?””
Simone closed her eyes.
“Because I was supposed to leave after helping her.””
Darius froze.
“Leave?””
“Yes.””
“But you stayed.””
She nodded.
“I fell in love with you.””
The honesty was painful.
Because it was the first time all night she sounded completely truthful.
Darius looked away.
“I don’t know what to believe anymore.””
Simone whispered.
“I know.””
Then Elena stepped forward.
“There’s one thing you still don’t know.””
Darius looked at her.
“What?””
Elena glanced at the photograph.
“Your sister didn’t disappear because she was running away.””
Darius waited.
“She disappeared because she was trying to protect someone.””
“Who?””
Elena looked toward Ava.
The room became silent.
Darius immediately stepped closer to his daughter.
“No.””
Elena shook her head.
“Not Ava.””
“Then who?””
Elena’s expression turned serious.
“Someone inside this house.””
Everyone looked around.
Darius felt the air change.
Because the mansion suddenly didn’t feel like home.
It felt like a trap.
Then the security system made a sound.
A notification appeared on the main screen.
One camera feed.
One room.
The office.
Everyone stared.
Because the camera showed someone standing inside.
Someone who had entered while they were searching for Ava.
Someone opening the hidden box.
Someone removing the final document.
Darius stepped closer.
“Who is that?””
The figure turned slightly toward the camera.
Enough for everyone to see.
Enough for Darius to recognize the face.
His blood went cold.
