The Secret Beneath Her Dress / Chapter 15 / 15

Chapter 15: The Truth He Was Never Ready For

Darius read the sentence again.

And again.

His mind refused to accept it.

The paper trembled in his hand.

His sister watched him carefully.

“What does it say?””

He didn’t answer.

Nobody moved.

Finally, Darius looked up.

“My father knew.””

The room went silent.

Raymond lowered his eyes.

Simone looked confused.

Darius continued.

“He knew about the money.””

His sister nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“And he hid it.””

“Yes.””

The truth felt heavier than he expected.

Because for years, Darius had believed his family’s tragedy started with his sister disappearing.

But now he understood.

It started long before.

The choices.

The lies.

The secrets.

They were inherited.

Passed from one person to another.

Until they finally reached him.

“My father knew what Raymond was doing?””

His sister nodded.

“But he was trying to fix it.””

Darius looked at the paper.

“Then why didn’t he tell me?””

“Because he was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She looked at him.

“Of losing you.””

The answer hurt.

Because it was the same mistake everyone had made.

They loved him.

But they chose secrets instead of trust.

Darius sat down slowly.

For the first time all night, he looked exhausted.

Not angry.

Not confused.

Just tired.

Simone approached carefully.

“Darius.””

He looked up.

She stopped.

Because she knew she had no right to ask for forgiveness.

Not yet.

“I’m sorry.””

He looked away.

“I know.””

The answer surprised her.

“You do?””

“Yes.””

He looked around the room.

“I understand why everyone did what they did.””

A pause.

“But understanding doesn’t erase what it cost me.””

Simone nodded.

Tears fell.

“I know.””

His sister sat beside him.

“I’m sorry I let you believe I was gone.””

Darius looked at her.

“I hated myself for not finding you.””

Her face broke.

“It was never your fault.””

He looked down.

“But I spent years thinking it was.””

She reached for his hand.

“You were always trying to save everyone.””

Darius smiled sadly.

“And I failed.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You saved Ava.””

The mention of his daughter changed his expression.

Ava.

The person who started everything.

The child who refused to stay silent.

Nia brought her into the room.

Ava looked at everyone.

“Is everything okay?””

Darius stood.

He walked toward her.

And this time, he didn’t pretend.

He knelt.

“There were a lot of secrets.””

Ava nodded.

“I know.””

“But you helped us find the truth.””

She smiled slightly.

“Because I knew something was wrong.””

Darius hugged her.

“You were brave.””

Ava looked over his shoulder.

At Simone.

At the family.

At the people who had spent years hiding pain.

Then she asked:

“Does this mean everyone can stop lying now?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Because the question was simple.

But the answer was complicated.

Finally, Darius looked at everyone.

“Yes.””

His voice was steady.

“No more lies.””

The investigation into Raymond’s actions would take time.

The company records would be reviewed.

The missing years would need explanations.

The broken trust would need rebuilding.

But for the first time in years, Darius wasn’t chasing the truth.

He had found it.

Later that night, after the guests left and the mansion became quiet, Darius stood alone in the ballroom.

The same place where everything had fallen apart.

The same place where Ava had pointed at Simone’s fake pregnancy.

The same place where a family secret finally broke open.

Simone walked beside him.

“I don’t expect you to forgive me.””

Darius looked at the empty room.

“I don’t know if I can yet.””

She nodded.

“I understand.””

A pause.

“But I need you to know something.””

He looked at her.

“The baby wasn’t real.””

She smiled sadly.

“But my love for you was.””

Darius didn’t answer.

Not immediately.

Because some wounds needed time.

Some truths needed patience.

But he didn’t walk away.

And for Simone, that was the first sign that maybe everything wasn’t lost.

Across the room, Ava laughed with her aunt.

Her aunt.

A person she had only known for one night.

But a person who was finally home.

Darius watched them.

And he realized something.

The biggest mystery in his life was never about the fake pregnancy.

It was never about the documents.

It was never even about who betrayed him.

The biggest mystery was how many people could love someone…

and still be too afraid to tell them the truth.

That night, the Carter family didn’t become perfect.

They became honest.

May you like

And sometimes…

honesty is where a family begins again.
