Chapter 6: The Room Behind the Door

The key sat in Ava’s small hand.

A tiny piece of metal.

Something that should have meant nothing.

But the reaction it caused was impossible to ignore.

Simone looked terrified.

Not surprised.

Not confused.

Terrified.

Darius noticed.

“Where did you find that?””

Ava looked at him.

“In the hallway.””

She glanced at Simone.

“It fell from her purse.””

Simone quickly stepped forward.

“Ava, give that to me.””

Darius moved first.

“Stop.””

His voice wasn’t loud.

But everyone stopped.

Simone froze.

Darius gently took the key from Ava.

“Thank you, sweetheart.””

Ava nodded.

Then she looked at her father.

“Are you mad?””

That question hurt him more than anything else that night.

Because she wasn’t asking if he was mad at Simone.

She was asking if she had done something wrong.

Darius crouched down.

“No.””

“Really?””

“Really.””

He looked directly into her eyes.

“You told the truth.””

Ava nodded.

Then Nia took her hand.

“Come with me again.””

This time, Ava didn’t argue.

She trusted her father.

When they were gone, Darius turned back.

He held up the key.

“Private storage room.””

Nobody spoke.

Simone looked away.

Marcus sighed.

“I knew this would happen.””

Darius looked at him.

“You knew?””

Marcus closed his eyes briefly.

“I knew there were things hidden there.””

“Things?””

“Yes.””

Darius’s grip tightened.

“What things?””

Marcus looked at Simone.

“That’s her story to tell.””

Darius laughed quietly.

“Interesting.””

He looked around the room.

“Everyone keeps saying the truth belongs to someone else.””

His eyes returned to Simone.

“But it’s my life.””

Simone’s expression broke.

“I never wanted you to find out this way.””

“Then how did you want me to find out?””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Darius walked toward the hallway.

The mansion suddenly felt different.

It was still beautiful.

Still expensive.

Still filled with everything he had worked for.

But now every room felt like it contained something hidden.

Something waiting.

Simone followed.

“Darius, please.””

He stopped.

“What?””

She struggled to speak.

“I was trying to fix something.””

He turned around.

“What?””

She looked down.

“I can’t tell you yet.””

The answer shocked him.

“Yet?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“There are things you don’t understand.””

Darius stared at her.

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I understand one thing.””

He lifted the key.

“You had a secret room.””

Silence.

“You had documents.””

Silence.

“You had someone from your past appear in my home.””

Silence.

“And you still think you get to decide when I deserve the truth.””

Simone looked away.

That hurt more than an argument.

Because it confirmed everything.

Darius walked down the hallway.

The guests followed at a distance.

Nobody wanted to miss what happened next.

At the end of the corridor was a small wooden door.

Darius had seen it before.

But he had never questioned it.

It was part of the house.

An old storage room.

A place he assumed contained decorations and forgotten items.

Tonight, it looked different.

The lock waited.

He inserted the key.

It turned easily.

The door opened with a quiet click.

Everyone behind him went silent.

The room inside was dark.

Darius reached for the light.

The bulb flickered on.

And his entire body froze.

Because this wasn’t a storage room.

There were boxes.

Folders.

Photographs.

Notes.

Everything arranged carefully.

Organized.

Hidden.

Waiting.

Simone stopped behind him.

“Darius…”

He didn’t look back.

His eyes moved across the shelves.

Then stopped on one box sitting alone in the center of the room.

A box with his name written on it.

Not Simone’s.

Not Marcus’s.

His.

Darius slowly walked toward it.

His hand reached out.

He touched the lid.

And behind him, Simone whispered the words he never wanted to hear.

“Please don’t open that.””

Darius looked back.

“Why?””

Her face was full of fear.

“Because once you see what’s inside…”

She paused.

“…you’ll never look at me the same way again.””

Darius opened the box.

And the first thing he saw was a photograph.

A photograph taken years ago.

Before he met Simone.

Before the mansion.

Before the wedding.

May you like

Before the life he thought he knew.

And standing beside him in the picture was someone who should never have been there.
