The Secret Beneath Her Dress / Chapter 3 / 15

Chapter 3: The Person She Feared

The doors opened wider.

The ballroom lights reflected across the polished marble floor as every person turned toward the entrance.

Darius didn’t know who he expected to see.

A friend.

A stranger.

Someone with another explanation.

But the look on Simone’s face told him one thing.

She knew exactly who was standing there.

The person walked inside slowly.

No rush.

No hesitation.

Just confidence.

The guests stepped aside.

Simone’s fingers tightened against her dress.

Darius noticed.

He noticed everything now.

Every nervous movement.

Every pause.

Every glance she tried to hide.

“Who is that?”” Darius asked.

Simone didn’t respond.

That made his stomach twist.

Because silence had become her answer all night.

The newcomer stopped several feet away.

“I guess congratulations are over.””

Nobody laughed.

The person looked around the room.

At the untouched food.

The expensive decorations.

The family members who were now watching a secret fall apart.

Then they looked at Simone.

“You really thought this would stay hidden forever?””

Simone took a small step backward.

“Don’t.””

The word came out quietly.

Darius heard it.

So did everyone else.

The person smiled slightly.

“Don’t what?””

Simone looked around.

For the first time, she seemed less concerned about Darius being angry.

She seemed afraid of something much bigger.

Darius moved between them.

“Who are you?””

The person looked at him.

“That depends.””

“On what?””

“On whether you want the truth about your wife.””

A wave of whispers moved through the room.

Darius’s expression remained controlled, but his hands tightened around the phone.

“My wife’s truth is something she should tell me.””

The person glanced at Simone.

“She had plenty of chances.””

Simone’s eyes filled with frustration.

“You don’t understand.””

Darius turned sharply.

“No, I don’t.””

His voice cracked slightly.

“And that’s the problem.””

For a moment, Simone looked like she wanted to say something.

Something real.

Something honest.

But then she stopped.

Ava watched quietly.

The child who had started this entire disaster looked overwhelmed.

Darius immediately noticed.

He walked toward her.

“Hey.””

Ava looked up.

“I’m okay.””

“I know.””

He knelt.

“You don’t have to be in the middle of this.””

Ava nodded.

“But I wanted to help.””

Darius’s heart hurt.

“You did.””

He looked at Nia.

“Take her somewhere quieter.””

Nia nodded.

“Come on, Ava.””

Ava hesitated.

She looked at Simone.

Not with hatred.

With confusion.

Then she followed Nia away from the crowd.

Once Ava was gone, Darius turned back.

The protective father disappeared.

The confused husband remained.

“Start talking.””

Simone looked at him.

“Darius…”

“No.””

He raised the phone.

“No more half-truths.””

The room waited.

Simone’s eyes moved to the screen.

Then to the person standing near the entrance.

Then back to Darius.

“I never wanted it to happen this way.””

Darius stared at her.

“That doesn’t answer my question.””

“I know.””

“Then answer it.””

Simone closed her eyes.

A tear slipped down her cheek.

But Darius couldn’t tell if it was regret.

Fear.

Or something else.

“I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

She opened her mouth.

Before she could speak, the person near the entrance interrupted.

“She can’t.””

Darius looked over.

“Why?””

The person reached into their pocket.

Not quickly.

Not threateningly.

Just enough to make everyone notice.

They pulled out a small envelope.

Simone immediately reacted.

“No.””

Darius saw it.

The fear.

The panic.

The instant recognition.

“What is that?”” he asked.

Nobody answered.

The person held the envelope tighter.

“This is why she needed everyone to believe she was pregnant.””

Darius stared.

The entire room went silent.

He stepped forward.

“What’s inside?””

Simone’s voice shook.

“Darius, don’t open it.””

And that was the moment he knew.

Whatever was inside that envelope…

Simone was more afraid of it than she was of losing him.

Darius reached out his hand.

The envelope touched his palm.

May you like

And before he could open it, he saw the name written across the front.

A name he had never expected to see connected to his family.
