Chapter 2: The Phone That Changed Everything
Darius didn’t move.
For several seconds, nobody in the mansion moved.
The entire ballroom seemed trapped inside that single moment.
The phone remained in his hand.
Ava stood beside him.
Nia stayed behind her, one hand still resting protectively on the child’s shoulder.
And Simone stood across from them, both hands covering the fake shape beneath her burgundy dress.
The woman who had spent months being celebrated as the future mother of Darius’s child suddenly looked like a stranger.
“Darius,” Simone finally said.
Her voice was softer now.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Desperate.
“Please.””
The word surprised him.
Because Simone had never sounded like that before.
Darius looked at the phone again.
The video was paused on the image of Simone holding the bright-red fake belly.
His jaw tightened.
“How long?””
Simone looked away.
“What?””
“How long have you been lying to me?””
A painful silence followed.
Several relatives lowered their eyes.
Others watched with open disbelief.
Darius had always been the man everyone respected.
The man who protected his family.
The man who solved problems.
But now he stood in the middle of his own home, realizing he might have been the only person who didn’t know the truth.
Simone shook her head.
“You’re misunderstanding what you saw.””
Darius laughed once.
Not because anything was funny.
Because he couldn’t believe those were her first words.
“Misunderstanding?””
He held up the phone.
“Simone, I watched you hold a fake stomach against your body.””
“It’s not what you think.””
“Then tell me what it is.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
That silence hurt more than any answer.
Ava looked up at her father.
“Dad, I told you.””
Darius looked down.
His expression softened immediately.
“I know, sweetheart.””
Ava’s eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t want everyone to be mad at me.””
Darius crouched down.
“You did the right thing.””
Simone looked at Ava.
And something flashed across her face.
Not sadness.
Not guilt.
Something harder to understand.
Nia noticed it too.
“Don’t look at her like that,” Nia said.
Simone turned.
“Excuse me?””
“You heard me.””
Simone let out a bitter laugh.
“This is unbelievable. Everyone is attacking me because a child found a video?””
Nia stepped closer.
“No. Everyone is asking questions because you have no explanation.””
Simone’s jaw tightened.
“You think you know everything.””
“No,” Nia replied.
“But I know fear when I see it.””
The room became tense again.
Darius stood.
“Enough.””
Everyone became quiet.
He looked at Simone.
“I want the truth.””
Simone stared at him.
The man she had built her life around was standing in front of her, asking for honesty.
But she didn’t answer.
Instead, she looked around the room.
At the guests.
At the family members.
At the people who had come to celebrate what they believed was a happy announcement.
Then she looked back at Darius.
“You really want to do this here?””
Darius’s face hardened.
“You did this here.””
The words landed heavily.
Simone looked down.
For a moment, she seemed smaller.
Almost vulnerable.
Then her expression changed.
“I need to talk to you privately.””
Darius shook his head.
“No.””
A few guests gasped quietly.
Simone stared at him.
“No?””
“No. Because for months, you let me believe something that changed my entire life.””
His voice lowered.
“You don’t get to choose when the truth comes out.””
Ava squeezed Nia’s hand.
The little girl looked exhausted.
Nia leaned down.
“Are you okay?””
Ava nodded slowly.
“I just wanted Dad to know.””
Nia kissed the top of her head.
“He knows now.””
But as Darius looked at Simone, he realized something.
The video explained one lie.
But it didn’t explain everything.
Because Simone wasn’t only scared about being exposed.
She was scared about something else.
Something she still wasn’t saying.
A man near the back of the room suddenly stepped forward.
He was one of Darius’s older relatives.
His face was pale.
“Darius.””
Everyone turned.
The man looked uncomfortable.
“I think you need to know something.””
Darius frowned.
“What?””
The man hesitated.
Then he pointed toward the phone.
“That video…”
He swallowed.
“That video was taken yesterday.””
Darius nodded.
“Yes.””
The man shook his head.
“No.””
His voice became quieter.
“It wasn’t just taken yesterday.””
Darius stared at him.
“What are you saying?””
The man looked directly at Simone.
“I’m saying I saw that same thing weeks ago.””
Simone’s face went completely still.
Darius noticed.
And that reaction told him more than words ever could.
He stepped closer.
“Who saw you?””
Simone didn’t answer.
“Simone.””
Her eyes moved toward the entrance of the ballroom.
And Darius followed her gaze.
The giant wooden doors slowly began to open.
A figure stood on the other side.
Someone who had been waiting outside.
Someone Simone clearly recognized.
May you like
And when the person finally spoke, Simone’s face lost all color.
“Looks like everyone finally knows.””
