Chapter 5: The Photograph No One Expected
Darius didn’t open the photo immediately.
He just stared at the screen.
The unknown number.
The sentence.
The warning.
All of it felt like another door opening into a room he didn’t want to enter.
Simone noticed his expression.
“What happened?””
Darius looked at her.
“Someone just sent me a message.””
Her face changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
That was enough.
Darius slowly turned the phone around.
“Why do you look like you know who sent this?””
Simone’s lips parted.
“I don’t.””
“You do.””
“I don’t.””
The difference was obvious.
A person denying something they didn’t know sounded confused.
Simone sounded afraid.
Marcus looked at the phone.
“Did they send a photo?””
Darius looked at him sharply.
“How do you know?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
That silence was becoming a pattern.
A pattern Darius hated.
“Everyone in this room seems to know pieces of my life except me.””
He stepped away from them.
“For months, I thought I was building a family.””
His eyes moved toward Simone.
“But apparently, I was the only one who didn’t know what family I was actually part of.””
Simone wiped her tears.
“Darius, I never wanted to hurt you.””
He looked at her.
“That’s what people say after they hurt someone.””
The sentence made her flinch.
For a moment, she looked less like someone hiding a secret and more like someone who knew she had lost control of the situation.
Darius opened the photo.
The screen loaded.
And his breathing stopped.
It wasn’t a picture of Simone with the fake belly.
It wasn’t another piece of proof.
It was something much more personal.
The image showed Simone sitting in a room.
A room Darius recognized instantly.
His home office.
His private space.
The place where he kept important documents.
The place where he never allowed guests without permission.
And sitting across from Simone in the picture was someone else.
Someone Darius knew.
Someone who should have been impossible.
The room erupted with whispers.
“What is that?””
“Who is she with?””
“Darius, are you okay?””
He didn’t respond.
His eyes stayed locked on the screen.
Simone stepped closer.
“Darius, listen to me.””
He lifted his hand.
“Don’t.””
The single word stopped her.
Because for the first time, he wasn’t asking.
He was protecting himself.
Nia returned from the other room after checking on Ava.
She immediately noticed the atmosphere.
“What happened?””
Nobody answered.
Ava peeked around the corner.
“Dad?””
Darius looked over.
His expression softened.
Only for her.
“I’m okay.””
Ava didn’t believe him.
Children always noticed what adults tried to hide.
Nia walked closer.
“Darius, what did you find?””
He looked at the phone.
Then at Simone.
Then at Marcus.
“I found out that apparently everyone has been protecting me from the truth.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Not everyone.””
Darius looked at him.
“Then tell me.””
Marcus hesitated.
“I was trying to.””
“Then stop trying.””
Darius stepped closer.
“Do it.””
Marcus took a breath.
“Simone didn’t fake the pregnancy because she wanted attention.””
The room became quiet.
Darius frowned.
“Then why?””
Marcus looked at Simone.
And she immediately shook her head.
“Don’t.””
Marcus ignored her.
“She was trying to protect herself.””
Darius’s eyes narrowed.
“From what?””
Simone whispered.
“Marcus.””
But he continued.
“From the truth coming out.””
The answer created more questions.
Darius looked frustrated.
“You’re saying she lied to me to hide another lie?””
Marcus didn’t respond.
Because he didn’t need to.
Darius understood.
He looked down at the photo again.
The image bothered him.
Not just because someone had entered his office.
Because of the timing.
The picture had been taken after Simone announced her pregnancy.
Which meant someone had been moving behind his back while everyone smiled in front of him.
Then Darius noticed something in the corner of the photo.
A small detail.
Something almost hidden.
A piece of paper on his desk.
With his own handwriting.
He zoomed in.
His face changed.
Because the paper was something he had written weeks earlier.
Something personal.
Something only he and Simone should have known about.
He looked at her.
“Who took this photo?””
Simone didn’t answer.
“Who?””
Her eyes filled with fear.
Then Marcus spoke quietly.
“It wasn’t taken by a stranger.””
Darius turned.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus looked toward the phone.
“It means the person who sent that picture was standing much closer to you than you realize.””
Darius stared.
A cold feeling moved through him.
Because suddenly the mystery wasn’t only about Simone anymore.
It was about everyone around him.
Then Ava’s voice came from behind him.
“Dad?””
He turned.
The little girl was holding something in her hand.
Something she had found while waiting.
Her face was pale.
“I think this belongs to Simone.””
Darius looked down.
Ava opened her hand.
A small key rested in her palm.
And attached to it was a tag.
May you like
A tag with words that made Simone immediately panic.
