The Secret Beneath the Pool / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1: The Day the Water Changed Everything

“Vanessa, stop crying!””

The words cut through the bright afternoon air like a blade.

Marcus Carter had heard his daughter laugh by that pool a hundred times. He had heard Lily splash her tiny feet in the shallow end while wearing her favorite pink swimsuit. He had heard her scream with joy when he lifted her high above the water.

But he had never heard her scream like this.

He was still inside the mansion when the sound reached him.

A frightened, desperate cry.

A child begging for help.

Marcus dropped the glass of water in his hand and ran.

The luxury home around him suddenly felt too large, every hallway stretching longer than it should. The marble floor blurred beneath his feet as he pushed through the open glass doors leading to the patio.

And then he saw her.

Lily.

His five-year-old daughter was already under the water.

The pool surface rippled violently where she had disappeared.

For one terrifying second, Marcus couldn’t move.

Then instinct took over.

“LILY!””

His voice shook the entire patio.

He sprinted across the stone deck, his white pants getting soaked as he dove his arm into the water. His fingers searched blindly until they found her small wrist.

He pulled.

Lily broke through the surface coughing, her peach dress heavy with water, her two puff buns falling apart as tears mixed with the water running down her face.

Marcus lifted her into his arms immediately.

She wrapped both arms around his neck so tightly that he felt her fingers trembling against his skin.

“Daddy,” she sobbed.

“Daddy, I was scared.””

“I’ve got you,” Marcus whispered, holding her against his chest.

“I’ve got you. You’re safe.””

His eyes moved over her quickly. Her shaking hands. Her terrified face. The water dripping from her eyelashes.

Then his gaze locked onto Vanessa.

She stood beside the pool wearing a cream sleeveless blouse and green pants, her long braids hanging perfectly over one shoulder.

Not a single strand of hair was out of place.

She looked annoyed.

Not scared.

Not shocked.

Annoyed.

Marcus slowly lowered Lily onto his hip.

His voice became quiet.

Too quiet.

“You pushed my daughter?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

For a moment, she looked almost offended that he would even ask.

“She needed to learn.””

Marcus stared at her.

The woman he had trusted.

The woman who had promised him she would love Lily like her own.

“What did you just say?””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“I said she needed to learn, Marcus. She’s five years old. She can’t spend her whole life being afraid of water.””

Lily buried her face against Marcus’s shoulder.

“But she didn’t fall,” Marcus said.

“You pushed her.””

Vanessa sighed like he was being unreasonable.

“You’re making this bigger than it is.””

Marcus looked around the patio.

The bright sunlight.

The expensive furniture.

The perfect glass doors.

Everything looked normal.

But nothing felt normal.

“My daughter was underwater,” he said.

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“And now she’s not.””

The coldness in her voice made something inside Marcus snap.

“You don’t get to decide what happens to her.””

Vanessa took another step forward.

“Marcus, don’t act like I’m some stranger. I live here. I take care of her.””

“You scare her.””

Lily’s small voice came from his shoulder.

“Daddy…”

Marcus looked down.

Her face was pale.

“What happened, baby?””

Lily hesitated.

Her tiny fingers gripped his shirt.

“Vanessa told me not to tell you.””

Marcus’s stomach tightened.

He looked back at Vanessa.

“What did you tell her?””

Vanessa’s face changed for just a second.

A flash of panic.

Then it disappeared.

“Nothing.””

Marcus noticed.

Because he knew Vanessa.

He knew every expression she made.

Every excuse.

Every time she was hiding something.

“You expect me to believe that?””

Vanessa stepped closer and reached toward Lily.

“Give her to me. She’s upset.””

Marcus moved back instantly.

“No.””

Vanessa froze.

“You don’t trust me?””

Marcus held Lily tighter.

“Not right now.””

The silence that followed felt heavier than the water in the pool.

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

Then she moved quickly.

Her hand reached for Lily’s arm.

Marcus reacted before he even thought.

He stepped between them.

“Don’t touch her.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You’re really doing this?””

“Yes.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You’re choosing her over me?””

Marcus looked at his daughter.

The little girl who was still shaking.

The little girl who had trusted him to protect her.

“I’m choosing my child.””

Something cold crossed Vanessa’s face.

For the first time, Marcus saw something he had never seen before.

Not anger.

Not frustration.

Something darker.

He carried Lily away from the pool.

“Daddy…”

“I’m right here.””

She looked over his shoulder.

Her voice became barely a whisper.

“Daddy… she said Mommy fell in here too.””

Marcus stopped walking.

The entire world seemed to freeze.

The birds.

The wind.

The sound of water moving in the pool.

Everything disappeared.

Slowly, Marcus turned around.

Vanessa was still standing near the pool.

But all the color had drained from her face.

And for the first time that day…

Vanessa looked afraid.
