Chapter 7: The Stranger Who Knew Too Much

Marcus stood in Lily’s bedroom doorway with the photograph in his hand.

The room that had always been his daughter’s safest place suddenly felt like a crime scene.

Her stuffed animals.

Her colorful blankets.

Her drawings taped to the wall.

All of it looked different now.

Because someone had been here.

Someone had entered the place where his daughter slept.

Someone had placed a warning beneath her pillow.

Marcus turned slowly.

“Who came into this room?””

Nobody answered.

His eyes moved between Vanessa and Rachel.

“Who?””

Vanessa looked shaken.

For once, she had no sharp response.

No accusation.

No explanation.

Rachel stepped closer.

“Marcus…”

He raised his hand.

“Not now.””

His voice was controlled.

Too controlled.

He looked toward the hallway.

The mansion was silent.

But he no longer trusted silence.

He walked downstairs and grabbed his phone.

“I’m calling security.””

Vanessa followed.

“Marcus, wait.””

He turned.

“Why?””

“Because if you involve other people, you don’t know what will happen.””

Marcus stared at her.

“That sounds a lot like a threat.””

Her face changed.

“No. It’s a warning.””

“I’m tired of warnings.””

He held up the photograph.

“I want answers.””

Vanessa looked at the picture.

Her expression shifted.

“What?””

Marcus noticed.

“You recognize this.””

“No.””

“You do.””

Vanessa looked away.

Rachel stepped closer.

“Marcus, she knows more than she’s saying.””

Vanessa turned sharply.

“And you don’t?””

Rachel’s face hardened.

“I tried to protect him.””

“You disappeared.””

“Because you made sure I couldn’t speak.””

Marcus looked between them.

“Enough.””

Both women stopped.

He pointed toward the stairs.

“Lily is upstairs. She is scared. Someone broke into my home.””

His eyes hardened.

“And you two are still fighting about yourselves.””

The words hit them both.

Marcus went upstairs and checked every room.

Every window.

Every door.

Nothing was broken.

That was what scared him most.

Whoever came inside didn’t force their way in.

They belonged.

By midnight, Marcus had installed temporary security cameras around the mansion.

He sat in the living room, staring at the monitors.

Lily slept upstairs.

A police report had been filed.

But he had not told them everything.

Not yet.

Because he didn’t know who he could trust.

His phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

*You are looking in the wrong direction.*

Marcus stared.

A second message appeared.

*Ask Vanessa about the night she met your wife.*

His jaw tightened.

He looked across the room.

Vanessa sat silently on the couch.

She noticed his expression.

“What happened?””

Marcus showed her the phone.

Her face immediately changed.

“Where did you get that?””

“Someone sent it.””

“Who?””

“That’s what I’m trying to find out.””

Vanessa stood.

“This needs to stop.””

Marcus laughed quietly.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because you don’t understand what you’re dealing with.””

“Then explain.””

She looked at him.

For a moment, Marcus thought she would finally tell the truth.

Instead, she walked toward the window.

“I met your wife before you knew.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

Vanessa didn’t turn around.

“She came to me.””

“Why?””

“She wanted answers.””

“About what?””

Vanessa looked outside.

“About a person who was stealing from her.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Who?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then said:

“Your business partner.””

Marcus stared.

“My business partner?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He was hiding money.””

Marcus felt a strange wave of confusion.

His wife had never told him that.

“Why would she come to you?””

Vanessa turned around.

“Because she thought I could help her.””

“You were strangers.””

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

Marcus narrowed his eyes.

“What do you mean?””

Vanessa looked down.

“We weren’t strangers.””

The room became quiet.

“Then what were you?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Marcus waited.

Finally, she whispered:

“Your wife and I had history.””

Before Marcus could respond, one of the security monitors made a sound.

A motion alert.

Everyone looked.

The camera pointed toward the backyard.

A figure stood near the pool.

Marcus immediately stood.

“Stay here.””

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

“Marcus.””

He pulled away.

“I said stay here.””

He walked outside.

The figure was gone.

Only the pool remained.

But something had been left behind.

A small envelope sitting on the stone deck.

Marcus picked it up.

Inside was a single photograph.

His wife.

Standing beside Vanessa.

Both women were much younger.

On the back, written in black ink:

*She never told you who I was.*

Marcus looked toward the mansion.

Vanessa was watching from the glass doors.

And for the first time…

Marcus wondered if the woman he married had been a stranger all along.
