Chapter 5: The Letter She Left Behind

Marcus did not open the envelope immediately.

That surprised everyone.

Even himself.

For years, he had dreamed about hearing from his wife again.

A message.

A note.

Anything.

But now that something from her was finally in his hands, he was afraid.

Because sometimes the truth was harder to carry than a mystery.

Lily sat upstairs with a security guard Marcus had called from his phone.

He refused to let her be alone with Vanessa.

Not anymore.

The living room felt smaller than before.

Rachel sat across from him.

Vanessa stood near the window.

Watching.

Waiting.

Marcus looked at the envelope.

“How long have you had this?””

Rachel lowered her eyes.

“Six years.””

Marcus looked up sharply.

“Six years?””

“I wanted to give it to you.””

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

“Why?””

Rachel looked toward Vanessa.

“Because she found out I had it.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You’re unbelievable.””

Marcus turned.

“Stop.””

The single word silenced her.

He had never spoken to Vanessa that way before.

Not once.

Vanessa noticed.

And it hurt her.

“You really believe her over me?””

Marcus looked at the envelope.

“I don’t know what I believe anymore.””

That answer seemed to hit harder than anger.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Marcus, think carefully. A woman appears after years and suddenly claims she knows everything?””

Rachel interrupted.

“She doesn’t need to believe me.””

She pointed at the envelope.

“Her handwriting is inside.””

Marcus looked down.

The room went quiet.

Finally, he opened it.

Inside was a folded piece of paper.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

His wife’s.

His fingers shook as he unfolded it.

The first line made his heart stop.

*Marcus, if you’re reading this, something happened to me.*

He stopped.

The air left his lungs.

Rachel looked away.

Vanessa became completely still.

Marcus continued reading.

The letter was short.

But every word felt heavy.

His wife wrote that she had discovered something about Vanessa.

Something involving money.

Something involving lies.

She wrote that she was scared.

She wrote that she did not know who she could trust.

Then came the final sentence.

*Do not let Vanessa raise Lily alone.*

Marcus lowered the letter.

His eyes burned.

“No.””

Vanessa’s voice came softly.

“Marcus…”

He looked at her.

“What did you do?””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“I didn’t kill her.””

The room froze.

Marcus stared.

He hadn’t said that.

Nobody had said that.

Rachel looked at Vanessa in shock.

“You just admitted you were thinking it.””

Vanessa covered quickly.

“That’s not what I meant.””

Marcus stood.

His voice was low.

“You knew what I was thinking.””

Vanessa looked away.

For the first time, she had no explanation.

Marcus walked toward her.

“How long have you known about this letter?””

She said nothing.

“How long?””

“Since before we got married.””

The confession was quiet.

But it destroyed everything.

Marcus stepped back.

“You knew?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with frustration.

“You don’t understand.””

“No. Explain it.””

“She hated me.””

“Because she found out something.””

Vanessa looked toward the pool.

“You have no idea what happened that night.””

Marcus followed her gaze.

“The night my wife died?””

Vanessa’s lips pressed together.

“Yes.””

“Then tell me.””

A long pause.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“She wasn’t supposed to be there.””

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“She came back to the house unexpectedly.””

Marcus felt cold.

“Why?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Why did she come back?””

Vanessa looked away.

Because she was hiding something too.

Marcus noticed.

“You’re still lying.””

“No.””

“You are.””

Rachel suddenly stood.

“Marcus.””

He looked at her.

Rachel’s face was pale.

“There’s something you need to see.””

She reached into her bag.

She pulled out another item.

A small key.

Marcus stared.

“What is that?””

Rachel placed it on the table.

“It belongs to a storage box.””

“Whose?””

Rachel looked at him.

“Your wife’s.””

Marcus’s heart raced.

“Where is it?””

Rachel hesitated.

Then whispered:

“She hid it because she knew Vanessa would look for it.””

Marcus picked up the key.

“What’s inside?””

Rachel looked toward Vanessa.

And Vanessa’s expression answered before she did.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Something that proves what happened that night.””

Marcus gripped the key.

Then Vanessa suddenly moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

She grabbed the letter from the table.

Marcus reacted instantly.

“Vanessa!””

She stepped backward, holding the paper tightly.

Her calm mask was gone.

“You were never supposed to find this.””

Marcus stared at her.

“What else are you hiding?””

Vanessa looked at the letter.

Then at him.

May you like

And whispered:

“Your wife didn’t die because of the pool.””
