Chapter 4: The Woman at the Door
Marcus did not move.
For several seconds, the entire mansion felt frozen.
The voice from the entrance was impossible.
A voice from a chapter of his life he had buried so deeply that he sometimes wondered if he had imagined it.
Vanessa stared at the front door.
Her face had lost all color.
Marcus noticed.
And that scared him.
Because Vanessa was not the kind of person who frightened easily.
“Who is it?”” Marcus asked.
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
Her eyes slowly moved toward him.
“Don’t open that door.””
The warning was quiet.
Almost desperate.
Marcus stared at her.
A minute ago, she had been challenging him.
Now she sounded afraid.
That was enough.
He walked toward the entrance.
“Marcus, stop.””
He ignored her.
Every step felt heavier.
The expensive marble floor reflected his figure as he approached the door. His hand reached for the handle.
Then he opened it.
A woman stood outside.
Older.
Tired.
Her hair was pulled back, and she wore a simple gray coat despite the warm weather.
But Marcus recognized her immediately.
His breath disappeared.
“Rachel?””
The woman’s eyes filled with tears.
“Hi, Marcus.””
Behind him, Vanessa whispered:
“No.””
Marcus turned slightly.
“What are you doing here?””
Rachel looked past him into the mansion.
Then her eyes landed on Vanessa.
The silence between them said more than words.
Marcus felt his confusion grow.
“You two know each other?””
Rachel looked at Vanessa.
“Yes.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Marcus, she’s lying.””
Rachel’s expression hardened.
“I’m not the one who lied.””
The words landed like a strike.
Marcus looked between them.
“What is happening?””
Rachel took a breath.
“I came because Lily needs to know the truth.””
Marcus immediately stepped in front of the doorway.
“No.””
Rachel looked at him.
“You deserve to know too.””
“My daughter has been through enough.””
Rachel nodded slowly.
“I know.””
Her voice cracked.
“That’s why I waited this long.””
Marcus studied her face.
“Waited for what?””
Rachel looked down.
“For Vanessa to finally make a mistake.””
Vanessa moved quickly.
“That’s enough.””
Marcus turned toward her.
“No. It’s not.””
Vanessa’s jaw tightened.
“You don’t know who she is.””
Marcus looked at Rachel.
“Then tell me.””
Rachel hesitated.
The hesitation bothered him.
“What?””
She looked toward the pool outside.
Then back at Marcus.
“I was there the night your wife died.””
The world went silent.
Marcus felt like the floor moved beneath him.
“No.””
Rachel swallowed.
“Yes.””
“Everyone told me she slipped.””
Rachel looked away.
“Everyone told you what they wanted you to believe.””
Marcus’s hands curled into fists.
“Who is everyone?””
Nobody answered.
And that silence was the answer.
He stepped outside onto the front steps.
“Tell me what happened.””
Rachel looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“Don’t.””
Rachel ignored her.
“Your wife wasn’t alone that night.””
Marcus felt his heartbeat become louder.
“Who was with her?””
Rachel looked directly at Vanessa.
“Her.””
The word echoed.
Marcus turned slowly.
Vanessa shook her head.
“That’s insane.””
Rachel’s voice remained steady.
“I saw you.””
Vanessa laughed once.
A sharp, empty sound.
“You saw nothing.””
“I saw you arguing.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Arguing about what?””
Vanessa said nothing.
Rachel continued.
“Your wife wanted to leave.””
Marcus froze.
“Leave?””
“She had found something.””
“What?””
Rachel looked at Lily’s bedroom window.
“She was going to tell you.””
Marcus felt his chest tighten.
“Tell me what?””
Rachel opened her mouth.
But before she could speak, Vanessa interrupted.
“Marcus, you’re listening to a stranger who disappeared for years.””
Rachel looked at her.
“I disappeared because you threatened me.””
Marcus’s eyes snapped toward Vanessa.
“You threatened her?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“No.””
Rachel stepped forward.
“She told me if I talked, she would make sure nobody believed me.””
Marcus stared at Vanessa.
The woman standing there looked different now.
Not like the woman who cooked dinner.
Not like the woman who helped Lily with homework.
Like someone Marcus had never known.
Lily’s small voice suddenly came from behind him.
“Daddy?””
Marcus turned.
She stood in the hallway holding her stuffed rabbit.
Her eyes moved between the adults.
Rachel’s expression softened.
“Oh my God…”
Marcus immediately walked toward Lily.
“Sweetheart, go back upstairs.””
“But who is she?””
Marcus looked at Rachel.
Then Vanessa.
He didn’t know what to say.
Because for the first time in years…
He realized he might not know the truth about his own family.
Rachel lowered her voice.
“Marcus, there’s something else.””
He looked at her.
“What?””
Rachel reached into her coat pocket.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept this because I was afraid.””
Marcus stared at it.
“Afraid of what?””
Rachel looked at Vanessa.
“Of what she would do if you ever found out.””
Marcus took the envelope.
His hands trembled.
On the front were three words.

*For Marcus Only.*
And beneath them was his wife’s handwriting.
