The Secret Beneath the Pool / Chapter 2 / 15

Chapter 2: The Question Nobody Wanted Asked

Marcus did not remember walking back into the mansion.

One second, he was standing on the patio staring at Vanessa.

The next, he was inside, sitting on the edge of the living room couch with Lily wrapped in a towel beside him.

The house was silent.

Too silent.

The kind of silence that made every small sound feel dangerous.

Lily held a cup of warm water with both hands.

Marcus watched her carefully.

She was trying to be brave.

That hurt him more than her crying.

A five-year-old should not know how to hide fear.

“Lily,” Marcus said softly.

She looked up.

“Can you tell Daddy what Vanessa said?””

Her eyes moved toward the hallway.

As if she was worried someone might hear.

Marcus lowered his voice.

“She’s not here. It’s just us.””

Lily swallowed.

“She said the pool was special.””

Marcus frowned.

“Special?””

Lily nodded.

“She said Mommy was here before.””

Marcus felt his chest tighten.

He forced himself to stay calm.

“What else?””

Lily looked down at the towel covering her knees.

“She said Mommy didn’t want to leave.””

Marcus stopped breathing for a moment.

The words hit harder than he expected.

His wife.

Lily’s mother.

The woman whose absence had become the quietest pain in their home.

He had spent years trying to explain loss to his daughter.

Trying to explain why some people disappear from our lives.

But Vanessa knew something.

Or she was using something.

And Marcus needed to know which.

A sound came from the doorway.

Vanessa.

She had changed into dry clothes.

Her hair was still perfectly arranged.

Her expression was controlled again.

“Marcus, we need to talk.””

He stood immediately.

“No.””

Vanessa blinked.

“No?””

“Not until Lily is somewhere safe.””

Her face tightened.

“You’re acting like I hurt her.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You pushed her into a pool.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I was teaching her.””

“You terrified her.””

“I was helping her.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Then why did you tell her not to tell me?””

For the first time, Vanessa had no immediate answer.

That was all Marcus needed to see.

Lily climbed off the couch and moved behind him.

Vanessa noticed.

The little girl hiding from her.

And instead of looking sorry…

She looked irritated.

“Marcus, you’re letting a child misunderstand something.””

“A child who is scared of you.””

Vanessa laughed quietly.

Not because anything was funny.

Because she was frustrated.

“You really think I’m the villain here?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Vanessa walked toward the kitchen island.

“You want the truth?””

Marcus stayed silent.

She poured herself a glass of water.

“The truth is that you’ve been looking for someone to blame since your wife disappeared.””

The room went cold.

Marcus’s face changed.

“Don’t.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You never dealt with it.””

“Don’t talk about her.””

“You built this house around a memory and expected everyone else to live inside it.””

Marcus clenched his fists.

“You don’t get to talk about my family like that.””

Vanessa set the glass down.

“I am your family.””

“No.””

The word came out instantly.

And it hurt both of them.

Vanessa stared at him.

“You don’t mean that.””

“I do.””

For a moment, neither moved.

Then Vanessa’s voice lowered.

“You’re going to regret pushing me away.””

Marcus felt a chill.

“Is that a threat?””

“No.””

She smiled faintly.

“It’s a warning.””

Before Marcus could answer, his phone rang.

The screen showed an unknown number.

He almost ignored it.

Then he saw the message appear.

One sentence.

*You need to ask Vanessa what really happened at the pool.*

Marcus looked at the phone.

Then at Vanessa.

Her expression changed when she saw his face.

“What is it?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

He walked slowly toward the window overlooking the pool.

The same pool where Lily had nearly drowned.

The same pool Vanessa had just mentioned.

His fingers tightened around the phone.

“Who knows about this?””

Vanessa went completely still.

And that scared Marcus more than anything.

May you like

Because she didn’t ask what he meant.

She already knew.
