Chapter 11: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Gone
Marcus stared at the signature.
The world seemed to slow down.
He read it again.
Then again.
But the name did not change.
*Thomas Vale.*
Vanessa’s father.
A man who had been buried six years earlier.
A man Marcus had attended a funeral for.
A man everyone said was gone.
“No.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You know that name.””
Marcus didn’t answer.
His eyes stayed on the paper.
“Vanessa’s father died.””
Daniel nodded.
“That’s what everyone believes.””
Marcus looked up sharply.
“What are you saying?””
Before Daniel could answer, Marcus’s phone rang.
Rachel.
He answered immediately.
“What happened?””
Her voice was tense.
“Marcus, you need to come back.””
“What happened to Lily?””
“She’s safe.””
He exhaled.
“Then what?””
A pause.
Then:
“Vanessa disappeared.””
Marcus frowned.
“What?””
“She left the mansion.””
“Where?””
“She didn’t say.””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
Then the note.
“She took anything?””
Rachel hesitated.
“Her father’s old photograph.””
Marcus felt a chill.
“Why would she take that?””
Rachel lowered her voice.
“Because she knows something.””
The call ended.
Marcus looked around the room.
The hidden documents.
The warning.
The impossible signature.
Everything was connected.
Daniel picked up the note.
“She wasn’t supposed to find this.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Who?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Who wrote it?””
Daniel looked away.
That was enough.
Marcus grabbed his arm.
“You know.””
Daniel sighed.
“I suspected.””
“Tell me.””
Daniel looked exhausted.
“Thomas Vale didn’t die.””
Marcus felt anger rise.
“You’re telling me a dead man is alive?””
“I’m telling you someone has been using his name.””
Marcus looked at the note.
“Why?””
“Fear.””
Daniel put the paper down.
“Your wife discovered Thomas had created a network of people who owed him favors. Money. Secrets. Threats.””
Marcus remembered Vanessa.
Her fear.
Her warnings.
“She was controlled.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
A sudden sound came from downstairs.
A door closing.
Marcus froze.
“Someone’s here.””
They moved quickly.
The downstairs door was open.
Cold air entered the house.
Marcus looked outside.
Nothing.
Then he saw something on the floor.
A woman’s necklace.
His wife’s necklace.
The one she wore every day.
Marcus picked it up.
His fingers trembled.
“She had this the night she died.””
Daniel looked at it.
“How do you know?””
“Because I found it by the pool.””
Daniel stared.
“You never told anyone?””
Marcus shook his head.
“I thought it was part of the accident.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“It wasn’t.””
Marcus looked at him.
“What do you mean?””
Daniel pointed at the necklace.
“Look closer.””
Marcus turned it over.
On the back was a tiny mark.
A symbol.
He recognized it.
It was the same symbol on the documents from the hidden compartment.
His wife had been leaving clues.
Not just before she died.
After.
Impossible.
Unless…
Marcus’s phone buzzed.
A video file.
No number.
No message.
Just a file.
Daniel looked worried.
“Don’t open it.””
Marcus ignored him.
He pressed play.
The screen showed darkness.
Then a familiar voice.
His wife.
Marcus stopped breathing.
“Marcus…”
Her voice shook.
“If you’re watching this, I didn’t get the chance to tell you everything.””
His knees nearly gave out.
The recording continued.
“I know what you’re going to think. I know you’ll blame yourself.””
A tear moved down Marcus’s face.
“But please listen.””
The camera moved slightly.
His wife looked frightened.
“Vanessa is not the person you think she is.””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
The video continued.
“She made mistakes. She hurt people. But she is not the one who planned this.””
A shadow moved behind her.
Marcus leaned closer.
His wife looked over her shoulder.
Then whispered:
“He’s here.””
The video shook.
A man’s voice spoke in the background.
Marcus couldn’t see his face.
But he heard the words.
“You should have stayed quiet.””
The screen went black.
Marcus stared.
Then the phone buzzed again.
A final message appeared.
*Now you know why she died.*
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“Who sent this?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Because they both knew.
Someone was watching.
May you like
Someone knew they found the video.
And someone wanted Marcus to know the truth.
