The Secret Beneath the Pool / Chapter 14 / 15

Chapter 14: The Final Lie

Marcus could barely breathe.

“The person she trusted most.””

The words stayed in the room.

Everyone looked at everyone else.

Waiting.

Fearful.

Because the truth was no longer hidden.

It was standing right in front of them.

“Who?”” Marcus asked.

Rachel’s lips trembled.

“I can’t.””

Marcus stared.

“After everything, you still can’t?””

Rachel looked toward Lily’s room.

“I’m trying to protect her.””

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“You’re protecting secrets.””

“No.””

“Then tell me.””

Rachel closed her eyes.

“I was afraid.””

“Of Thomas?””

Rachel shook her head.

“No.””

A pause.

“Of your wife.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

Rachel looked at him.

“She knew more than anyone.””

Marcus felt confused.

“My wife?””

“Yes.””

Rachel took a breath.

“She discovered Thomas was manipulating people. She discovered the money. She discovered the threats.””

Marcus waited.

“But she also discovered something else.””

“What?””

Rachel looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa’s face changed.

She knew.

Marcus noticed.

“What is it?””

Vanessa whispered:

“She found out I wasn’t the only person Thomas controlled.””

Marcus looked at Rachel.

“No.””

Rachel nodded.

“He controlled me too.””

Marcus stared.

“How?””

Rachel looked ashamed.

“My brother owed him money.””

Silence.

“He used my family against me.””

Marcus looked away.

Another person.

Another secret.

Another victim.

But one question remained.

“Who was with my wife at the pool?””

Nobody answered.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“I know.””

Everyone looked at her.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Who?””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“Daniel.””

The room froze.

Marcus turned.

Daniel stood near the doorway.

He had arrived silently.

His face was unreadable.

“No.””

Marcus stared.

“Daniel?””

Daniel slowly closed his eyes.

“I was hoping she wouldn’t remember.””

Marcus felt something inside him break.

The man who helped him.

The man who claimed to have proof.

The man who said he wanted justice.

“You knew?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Yes.””

“You were there?””

“Yes.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Did you kill my wife?””

Daniel’s face changed.

Pain.

Not anger.

“I loved your wife.””

Marcus stopped.

Daniel continued.

“I loved her before you knew the truth.””

The confession shocked everyone.

“Then why?””

Daniel looked down.

“Because I failed her.””

Marcus waited.

Daniel explained.

That night, his wife had called him because she knew someone was following her.

She needed help.

Daniel arrived at the pool.

He saw her arguing with someone.

Thomas.

But there was another person.

Someone Thomas had been controlling.

Someone who had access to the house.

Someone close.

Marcus’s voice lowered.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Your mother.””

The room went silent.

Marcus stared.

“My mother is dead.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then what are you saying?””

Daniel looked toward the photograph.

“She was the reason Thomas disappeared.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Your mother discovered Thomas had a son.””

Marcus felt dizzy.

“She protected you.””

“From him?””

“Yes.””

Daniel continued.

“But Thomas found out.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

Then Rachel.

Then Daniel.

Everything was connected.

“But my wife…”

Daniel’s voice became softer.

“Your wife discovered the truth.””

“And?””

“She tried to expose Thomas.””

Marcus whispered:

“So why did she die?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Because someone panicked.””

A phone rang.

Everyone froze.

Marcus looked down.

Unknown number.

He answered.

No one spoke.

Then a familiar voice.

Old.

Calm.

Cold.

“Hello, son.””

Marcus stopped breathing.

The phone slipped slightly in his hand.

Because he knew that voice.

Even though he had never heard it before.

Thomas Vale.

Alive.

“Where is my daughter?””

A quiet laugh.

“Still protecting people who betrayed you.””

Marcus looked around.

“Where are you?””

The voice answered:

“Where this story started.””

Marcus felt cold.

The pool.

The mansion.

The place where Lily almost died.

Then Thomas spoke again.

“Bring Vanessa.””

The call ended.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

She was already crying.

May you like

Because she knew.

Thomas had come back for her.
