Chapter 3: The Woman Behind the Calm Smile
Marcus spent the night sitting outside Lily’s bedroom door.
He told himself it was because he wanted to make sure she slept peacefully.
But the truth was different.
He was afraid.
Not of Vanessa.
Not anymore.
He was afraid of all the things he didn’t know.
The next morning, sunlight poured through the mansion windows, making everything look clean and innocent.
But Marcus knew better.
Some secrets hid best in beautiful places.
Lily woke up quietly.
She found him sitting there.
“Daddy?””
Marcus looked up.
“Hey, princess.””
She climbed into his arms.
For a few seconds, neither of them spoke.
Then Lily whispered:
“Are you mad at me?””
Marcus pulled back immediately.
“What?””
She looked down.
“Because Vanessa said grown-ups get tired when kids make problems.””
Marcus felt his heart break.
He touched her cheek.
“Lily, listen to me.””
She looked at him.
“You are never a problem.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Promise?””
“I promise.””
He hugged her.
And behind that hug, Marcus made a decision.
He was going to find the truth.
No matter who tried to stop him.
Later that morning, Vanessa sat at the dining table drinking coffee as if nothing had happened.
Marcus walked in.
She looked up.
“You’re still angry.””
“I’m not here to argue.””
“Then why are you here?””
Marcus placed his phone on the table.
The message was still open.
Vanessa looked at it.
Her face changed.
Only slightly.
But Marcus saw it.
“You know who sent this.””
Vanessa looked away.
“No.””
“You hesitated.””
“I was surprised.””
“By what?””
She didn’t answer.
Marcus leaned forward.
“What happened at this pool?””
Vanessa stood.
“Nothing happened.””
“Lily said her mother fell in.””
The room went silent.
Vanessa’s hand stopped halfway toward her coffee cup.
Marcus watched her carefully.
There.
That reaction.
A crack in the mask.
“You heard her,” Vanessa said quietly.
It wasn’t a question.
Marcus’s eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked at him.
For the first time, she seemed less powerful.
Less in control.
“You should stop asking questions you don’t want answered.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“No. I should have started asking them years ago.””
Vanessa’s expression hardened again.
“You think I’m the only person keeping secrets?””
Marcus froze.
“What’s that supposed to mean?””
She walked toward the glass doors.
Toward the pool.
“You weren’t there that night.””
Marcus followed her gaze.
The water outside reflected the morning sun.
“What night?””
Vanessa said nothing.
“Vanessa.””
She turned around.
Her eyes were cold.
“Ask yourself why your wife’s story never made sense.””
Marcus felt his anger rise.
“Don’t play games with me.””
“I’m not.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
Vanessa stared at him.
And for a second, Marcus thought she might finally speak.
Instead, she reached into her purse.
She pulled out an old photograph.
She placed it on the table.
Marcus looked down.
His face changed.
Because the picture was of the pool.
The same pool.
But there was something written on the back.
A date.
A date from before Vanessa ever entered their lives.
Marcus looked up slowly.
“Where did you get this?””
Vanessa’s lips parted.
But before she could answer, the mansion doorbell rang.
Both of them turned.
A voice came from the front entrance.
“Marcus Carter?””
His blood ran cold.
Because he knew that voice.
He had not heard it in years.
Vanessa looked toward the door.
May you like
And whispered one word.
“Impossible.””
