Chapter 13: The Bloodline Nobody Knew
Marcus stared at Vanessa.
The photograph shook in his hand.
For a moment, he thought he had misunderstood her.
The words were impossible.
“Say that again.””
Vanessa looked at Lily.
Then at Marcus.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Thomas Vale was your father.””
The room became completely silent.
Marcus laughed once.
A broken, confused sound.
“No.””
Vanessa didn’t move.
“No, my father died years ago.””
She nodded.
“Your father did.””
Marcus felt his stomach tighten.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa walked closer.
“Thomas Vale was not my biological father.””
The air seemed to disappear.
“He raised me.””
Marcus stared.
“But…”
Vanessa looked at the photograph.
“Your mother had a relationship with him before she met the man you thought was your father.””
Marcus stepped back.
“No.””
“I know this is hard.””
“No.””
His voice became louder.
“You don’t get to walk into my life and tell me everything I know is a lie.””
Vanessa accepted the anger.
Because she knew he needed somewhere to put it.
Rachel quietly moved closer.
“Marcus…”
He turned.
“Did you know?””
Rachel looked down.
That was enough.
His face changed.
“You knew too?””
“I found out later.””
“How much later?””
Rachel swallowed.
“After your wife started investigating.””
Marcus looked around the room.
Every person around him had known pieces of his life.
Everyone except him.
His entire world felt like a story someone else had written.
“Why didn’t my wife tell me?””
Vanessa answered softly.
“Because she was trying to protect you.””
Marcus looked at her.
“From what?””
Vanessa’s eyes moved toward the photograph.
“From him.””
Marcus looked down.
Thomas Vale’s face stared back.
A man he had never known.
A man who had apparently controlled his life without being in it.
“How did you know?””
Vanessa sat slowly.
“Because my mother told me.””
Marcus remained standing.
“She told me when she was dying.””
The room became quieter.
“She told me Thomas had another child.””
Marcus looked at the photo.
“Me.””
Vanessa nodded.
“She spent years hiding it.””
“Why?””
“Because Thomas wanted control.””
Marcus frowned.
“Control over what?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Everything.””
She explained slowly.
Thomas Vale had built his power through secrets.
He collected information about people.
Used their mistakes.
Used their fears.
He believed knowing someone’s weakness meant owning them.
Marcus listened.
But one question stayed.
“My wife knew.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Months before she died.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
The pain returned.
His wife had been carrying this alone.
“She found documents proving it.””
“Where?””
“In the old house.””
Marcus remembered the hidden compartment.
The notebook.
The clues.
“She found out I was Thomas’s son.””
“Yes.””
“And she was going to tell me.””
Vanessa nodded.
“But she never got the chance.””
Marcus looked at the photograph again.
“Why would Thomas hurt his own daughter?””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“Because she betrayed him.””
“What do you mean?””
“She helped your wife.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You helped her?””
Vanessa looked away.
“Yes.””
“Then why did you act like you hated her?””
“Because Thomas was watching.””
The answer stunned him.
“He threatened you.””
Vanessa nodded.
“He threatened Lily too.””
Marcus’s anger returned.
“You should have told me.””
“I tried.””
“When?””
“After your wife died.””
Marcus stared.
“Then why didn’t you?””
Vanessa’s voice broke.
“Because he sent me a picture of Lily sleeping.””
Marcus froze.
“He said if I spoke, he would take her.””
Marcus looked toward Lily.
His daughter.
His reason for everything.
For the first time, he understood Vanessa’s fear.
But understanding was not forgiveness.
“You still hurt her.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I know.””
The admission was quiet.
“I was trying to scare her away from the pool because I saw someone watching.””
Marcus remembered.
The pool.
The beginning of everything.
“What did you see?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“A man.””
“Thomas?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
A cold feeling moved through Marcus.
“Then who?””
Vanessa looked at Rachel.
Rachel’s face changed.
“No.””
Marcus noticed.
“Rachel?””
Rachel stepped back.
“Marcus…”
“Tell me.””
Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.
“I was the person your wife called that night.””
Marcus stared.
“You said you were only there before.””
Rachel looked down.
“I lied.””
The room froze.
“I was at the pool.””
Marcus felt betrayed again.
“Why?””
Rachel whispered:
“Because your wife asked me to meet her.””
“For what?””
Rachel looked at him.
“To help her expose the person who betrayed her.””
Marcus waited.
“And?””
Rachel’s voice became barely audible.
“She was already dead when I arrived.””
A silence followed.
Then Marcus asked:
“Who was there?””
Rachel looked at him.
And answered:
“Your wife.””
Marcus frowned.
“What?””
Rachel shook her head.
“I mean…”
Her face turned pale.
“She wasn’t alone.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Who was with her?””
May you like
Rachel whispered:
“The person she trusted most.””
