Chapter 1: The Girl They Tried to Remove
“Leave. You’re not part of our new family.””
Those were the words my daughter heard standing beneath a wall of white roses, holding a bouquet she had practiced carrying for three months.
I used to believe weddings were where people promised forever. I never imagined mine would become the place where my little girl learned that some promises were already broken before the music even started.
The ballroom looked like a dream someone had carefully designed. Thousands of white flowers covered the massive wall behind the altar. Crystal lights reflected across the polished floor. Guests sat in rows wearing their finest clothes, whispering about how beautiful everything looked.
Everyone was smiling.
Everyone except my eight-year-old daughter, Aaliyah.
She stood at the end of the aisle in her silver flower-girl dress, her small fingers wrapped tightly around her bouquet. Her braided hair was decorated with tiny pearls that matched the beads on her dress.
She had been excited all morning.
She had asked me five times if she looked like a princess.
Now, she looked like a child trying not to cry in front of strangers.
And the reason was standing ten feet away.
Simone.
My bride.
The woman I was supposed to marry.
She stood in her white gown beneath the floral wall, but the softness she had shown me for the past two years had disappeared. Her smile was gone. Her eyes were sharp, nervous, almost angry.
She pointed toward the side exit.
“Aaliyah,” Simone said loudly enough for everyone nearby to hear.
“Go wait outside.””
The little girl blinked.
“Wait… what?””
Simone’s jaw tightened.
“I said leave.””
The room became strangely quiet.
I stopped walking toward the altar.
“Simone,” I called.
“What are you doing?””
She didn’t look at me.
“She shouldn’t be here anymore.””
Aaliyah looked down at her dress.
“But Dad said I could stand with him.””
Her voice cracked.
I saw her trying to be brave.
That was the part that hurt the most.
She wasn’t crying because she was scared.
She was crying because she was trying not to disappoint me.
Simone stepped closer to her.
“Not after today.””
My stomach dropped.
I walked forward immediately.
“Not after today?”” I repeated.
“What does that mean?””
Simone finally looked at me.
For a second, I saw fear in her expression.
Not guilt.
Fear.
Then she covered it with a cold smile.
“Darius, don’t make a scene.””
I stared at her.
“My daughter is standing in front of our wedding guests, and you’re telling her she doesn’t belong. You think I’m the one making a scene?””
Aaliyah moved closer to me and grabbed my hand.
I squeezed hers.
“You’re okay,” I whispered.
She nodded, but tears still rolled down her cheeks.
Simone crossed her arms.
“This day is about us.””
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“Our family includes her.””
Simone looked away.
“Things change.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
Because I remembered every conversation we had about becoming a family.
I remembered Simone sitting on my couch months earlier, helping Aaliyah with homework.
I remembered her telling my daughter, “You’re the best part of Darius.””
I remembered Aaliyah asking me if Simone would be the mother figure she never had.
And now she was being told she didn’t belong.
One of the guests whispered something.
Another looked away.
Everyone was watching.
Aaliyah tugged my sleeve.
“Dad?””
I looked down.
“Yes, baby?””
“Did I do something wrong?””
That question almost broke me.
“No.””
I looked directly at Simone.
“You hear me? She did nothing wrong.””
Simone’s expression changed.
For a moment, she looked like she wanted to explain.
Then the music stopped.
The entire room went silent.
A deep voice came from behind the guests.
“Ask her why she’s marrying you.””
Every head turned.
A man stepped out from the crowd.
He moved slowly, confidently.
He was older, maybe late forties. Bald. Wearing a black tuxedo. His face was serious, almost emotionless.
But Simone’s reaction said everything.
The color disappeared from her face.
The man walked closer.
No one stopped him.
No one even spoke.
He reached the aisle and looked straight at Simone.
“Tell him.””
Simone took a step back.
“Malcolm…”
My heart started pounding.
I looked between them.
She knew him.
Not like a stranger.
Like someone she had been trying to forget.
I stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
The man ignored me.
Instead, he slowly lifted his left hand.
A wedding ring reflected beneath the bright lights.
Aaliyah stared at it.
Guests gasped.
Simone covered her mouth.
“No…”
The man’s eyes never left hers.
“I think your fiancé deserves the truth.””
I looked at Simone.
“Simone?””
She didn’t answer.
The man lowered his hand slightly.
Then he said the words that changed everything.
“I’m the husband she never divorced.””
The room exploded with whispers.
Aaliyah looked up at Simone, confused and hurt.
I stood frozen beside my daughter.
And Simone stepped backward like she had just seen a ghost.
“Darius, wait—”
May you like
But before she could finish, Malcolm pulled something from inside his jacket.
And the expression on Simone’s face told me whatever he was holding was something she never wanted anyone to see.
