Chapter 9: The Truth Nobody Wanted
The stranger’s words changed the room instantly.
Not because they explained anything.
Because they created another question.
Another mystery.
Another piece missing from a story that already had too many.
Simone stared at the man.
Her face had gone completely still.
Not confused.
Not surprised.
Terrified.
I noticed.
And so did everyone else.
Malcolm moved between them.
“What are you doing here?””
The man ignored him.
His eyes stayed on Simone.
“I heard you were getting married.””
Simone whispered:
“How?””
The man smiled slightly.
Not kindly.
“You really thought nobody would find you?””
My stomach tightened.
I looked at Malcolm.
“Who is he?””
Malcolm didn’t answer.
That worried me more than anything.
Because Malcolm had answered every question until now.
He had arrived with secrets.
Documents.
Evidence.
But this man made even him look uncertain.
Maya stepped closer.
“Who are you?””
The stranger looked at her.
And his expression changed.
For the first time, he looked uncomfortable.
“I’m someone who knew your mother before all of this.””
Maya frowned.
“Before what?””
The man looked at Simone.
“Before she ran.””
Simone’s voice became sharp.
“Leave.””
Everyone froze.
Because it was the first time all day Simone sounded powerful again.
Not scared.
Angry.
The stranger smiled.
“There she is.””
He looked around the wedding hall.
“Still controlling everything.””
I stepped forward.
“Enough.””
The man looked at me.
“And you must be Darius.””
I didn’t like the way he said my name.
“How do you know me?””
He glanced at Simone.
“Because she talked about you.””
That surprised me.
Simone looked away.
The man continued.
“She told me she finally found someone who would believe her.””
My heart sank.
Believe her.
That was the phrase.
The same phrase she used whenever she told me about her past.
“I just need someone who believes me.””
I looked at Simone.
“What is he talking about?””
She didn’t answer.
The stranger reached into his pocket.
I immediately tensed.
But he only pulled out an old photograph.
He held it up.
Another photograph.
Another piece of a life I never knew existed.
I didn’t want to look.
But I did.
And I recognized Simone.
Younger again.
Standing beside the stranger.
My eyes moved to the date.
Twenty years ago.
Maya saw it too.
Her face changed.
“You knew him?””
Simone closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
Maya’s voice shook.
“How?””
No answer.
The stranger spoke.
“Because before Malcolm, before the name change, before the new life…”
He looked at Simone.
“She was running from something.””
I felt the room shift.
I looked at Malcolm.
“Were you part of this?””
His jaw tightened.
“No.””
The stranger laughed.
“That’s what she told you?””
Malcolm stepped forward.
“Watch yourself.””
The stranger smiled.
“Still protecting her.””
Maya looked between them.
“I don’t understand.””
Nobody answered.
And that was becoming unbearable.
I turned toward Simone.
“Tell us.””
She looked at me.
The pain in her eyes was real.
But real pain didn’t undo real damage.
“Darius…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Not another apology. Not another explanation you stop halfway through.””
I pointed toward the people around us.
“Your daughter is here.””
I pointed toward Aaliyah.
“My daughter is here.””
I looked at Malcolm.
“Everyone knows something except me.””
My voice cracked.
“I deserve the truth.””
Simone looked down.
For a long moment, she said nothing.
Then she whispered:
“I was afraid.””
The stranger laughed softly.
“Afraid?””
Simone looked at him.
“Yes.””
Her voice grew stronger.
“You don’t get to tell my story.””
The room went quiet.
Because for the first time, Simone wasn’t just defending herself.
She was fighting back.
The stranger’s smile disappeared.
I looked between them.
“What happened?””
Simone took a shaky breath.
Then she looked directly at me.
“The reason I left…”
She paused.
“The reason I changed my name…”
Another pause.
“The reason I never told you about Malcolm, Maya, or any of this…”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Is because I was running from the man standing in front of us.””
Everyone turned toward the stranger.
His expression changed.
And then he said something that made Malcolm immediately reach for his phone.
“Tell him the truth, Simone.””
The stranger smiled.
“Tell him why you were never divorced.””
Simone froze.
My heart stopped.
Because I suddenly understood.
There was another reason.
Another secret.
Another reason Malcolm’s ring still mattered.
And Simone’s next words changed everything.
“I was never divorced…”
May you like
She looked at the man.
“Because he made sure I couldn’t be.””
