Chapter 10: The Man Who Locked the Past Away
For a moment, nobody understood what Simone had said.
Not completely.
The words were simple.
But the meaning behind them changed everything.
“I was never divorced…”
Her voice shook.
“Because he made sure I couldn’t be.””
Every person in that room turned toward the man standing near the entrance.
The stranger.
The one who had walked into my wedding like he owned the truth.
The one who knew Simone before she became the woman I loved.
His confident expression faded.
“Careful, Simone.””
The warning in his voice made my skin crawl.
Not because he sounded angry.
Because he sounded familiar.
Like someone who had used that same tone many times before.
Simone stepped back.
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I’m done being afraid of you.””
The man laughed quietly.
“You always say that.””
Malcolm moved closer.
“Who are you?””
The stranger looked at him.
“You already know.””
Malcolm’s face tightened.
But he didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I looked between them.
“Someone please explain what is happening.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then Simone looked at me.
And I saw something I had never seen before.
Shame.
Not guilt.
Not fear.
Shame.
“My name wasn’t always Simone.””
I nodded slowly.
“I know.””
She swallowed.
“But you don’t know why.””
The ballroom became silent again.
She continued.
“My real name is Simone Carter.””
The stranger smiled.
“So dramatic.””
She ignored him.
“When I was younger, I married Malcolm.””
She looked at him.
“And I thought I loved him.””
Malcolm looked down.
Aaliyah stayed close to me.
I could feel her fingers wrapped around mine.
“But after we got married,” Simone continued, “I realized I didn’t know the person I married.””
The stranger laughed.
“Here we go.””
Malcolm looked at him.
“Shut up.””
The man turned.
“Still playing hero?””
That sentence hit Malcolm harder than I expected.
I noticed.
Because Malcolm wasn’t just angry.
He was hurt.
Simone took a breath.
“Malcolm wasn’t the reason I ran.””
Everyone looked surprised.
Including me.
She looked at the stranger.
“He was.””
The stranger’s smile disappeared.
His eyes became cold.
“What are you doing?””
“Telling the truth.””
“You don’t want to do that.””
“I should have done it years ago.””
The man stepped forward.
Malcolm immediately blocked him.
“Stay where you are.””
The stranger looked at Malcolm.
“You always protected her.””
Malcolm’s jaw tightened.
“Someone had to.””
I looked at Malcolm.
“You knew?””
He hesitated.
“Yes.””
The answer hurt.
“You knew she was still married.””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
Malcolm looked ashamed.
“I tried.””
“When?””
“Before today.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I looked around the room.
“Everyone knew a piece of my life except me.””
Malcolm lowered his eyes.
“I made a mistake.””
I almost laughed.
Another mistake.
That word again.
Everyone had mistakes.
But somehow, I was the one paying for them.
Simone stepped forward.
“Darius.””
I looked at her.
“I need you to hear this.””
I said nothing.
She continued.
“After I left, I tried to get a divorce.””
The stranger’s face changed.
“But he blocked it.””
“How?”” I asked.
Simone looked at the floor.
“He threatened me.””
The room went quiet.
The stranger shook his head.
“That’s a lie.””
Simone looked at him.
“You told me if I left, you would make sure I lost everything.””
The stranger laughed.
“You expect them to believe you?””
Malcolm stepped forward.
“I believe her.””
The man looked at him.
“Of course you do.””
Then he looked at me.
“But do you?””
I hated that question.
Because I didn’t know.
I wanted to believe Simone.
But trust was something you could only break once.
And she had broken it repeatedly.
I looked at Maya.
She was crying silently.
Not because of me.
Because she was hearing her own mother’s pain for the first time.
Simone walked toward her.
“Maya…”
Maya stepped back.
“Don’t.””
Simone stopped.
“I’m sorry.””
Maya shook her head.
“You always say sorry after everything is already destroyed.””
That sentence crushed Simone.
But Maya wasn’t finished.
“I needed you when I was eight.””
Her voice broke.
“I needed you when I was sixteen.””
She wiped her tears.
“I needed you yesterday.””
Simone closed her eyes.
“And now you’re here because someone forced the truth out.””
Nobody spoke.
The stranger looked at Maya.
“Your mother made choices.””
Maya looked at him.
“And you made them worse.””
The man’s expression changed.
A small crack in his confidence.
Because Maya wasn’t afraid.
Not anymore.
I looked at the stranger.
“What do you want?””
He looked at me.
“Nothing.””
Nobody believed him.
Then he smiled.
“I just wanted Simone to stop pretending.””
Simone stared at him.
“Why now?””
The man glanced around.
“At your wedding.””
His smile widened.
“Because I knew everyone would finally listen.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“You planned this?””
He didn’t answer.
That was the answer.
I stepped forward.
“You ruined this day to expose her?””
“No.””
He looked at Simone.
“She ruined it years ago.””
The room went quiet.
Then Malcolm’s phone buzzed.
He checked the screen.
His expression changed instantly.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“What happened?””
He looked up.
“There’s been a mistake.””
Simone froze.
“What mistake?””
Malcolm stared at the phone.
Then at the stranger.
“The divorce records…”
His voice lowered.
“They were never blocked.””
Everyone stared.
“What?””
Malcolm looked at Simone.
“Someone else stopped them.””
The color drained from her face.
The stranger smiled.
May you like
And whispered:
“You finally figured it out.””
