Chapter 8: The Name She Buried
Nobody moved.
Maya held the paper in her hands.
Simone stood frozen.
Malcolm looked like he had just seen something he hoped would never return.
And I realized something terrifying.
This was bigger than a hidden marriage.
Bigger than a forgotten daughter.
Bigger than a wedding destroyed in front of everyone.
There was something underneath all of it.
Something everyone except me knew.
I looked at Maya.
“Read it.””
Simone shook her head.
“Darius, please.””
I turned toward her.
“No.””
My voice was calm.
Almost too calm.
“I need the truth.””
Maya looked down at the document.
Her hands trembled.
“I found this in the county records.””
She swallowed.
“It’s connected to the name Simone used before.””
I frowned.
“Before?””
Maya nodded.
“My mother wasn’t always Simone.””
The room reacted.
A few guests whispered.
I felt numb.
A name change.
A hidden marriage.
A hidden child.
How many versions of this woman existed?
Maya continued.
“She changed her name after she left.””
Simone looked at the floor.
“Because I needed a new beginning.””
Maya looked at her.
“You needed a new beginning.””
Her voice became sharper.
“I needed a mother.””
Silence.
Aaliyah looked up at me.
I put my hand on her shoulder.
Maya took a breath.
“The records say she filed for a name change after leaving our home.””
She looked at me.
“But that wasn’t the only thing.””
I waited.
“What else?””
Maya looked at Malcolm.
He closed his eyes.
Like he already knew.
“She also filed a statement.””
Simone whispered:
“Stop.””
Maya continued.
“A statement saying she was afraid of returning.””
I looked at Malcolm.
“Returning where?””
Nobody answered.
Then Maya said:
“To her old life.””
My chest tightened.
“What old life?””
Simone stepped forward.
“I can explain.””
I looked at her.
“You have said that three times today.””
Her face fell.
“And every time, there was another secret.””
She looked broken.
“I didn’t want to hurt you.””
“But you did.””
The words came out quietly.
That seemed to hurt her more.
Maya looked at me.
“I’m not saying this because I hate her.””
She glanced at Simone.
“I spent years wanting her to come back.””
Her voice cracked.
“I used to wait by the window.””
Simone covered her mouth.
“I thought every car outside was her.””
The room became painfully quiet.
“I thought maybe she got lost.””
Maya wiped her tears.
“I thought maybe someone stopped her from coming home.””
She looked at Simone.
“I never thought she just decided not to.””
Simone started crying.
“I was young.””
Maya shook her head.
“You always say that.””
She stepped closer.
“But I was younger.””
That sentence destroyed whatever defense Simone had left.
Because Maya was right.
A child had been forced to live with an adult decision.
I looked at Simone.
For a second, I saw the woman I loved.
The woman who laughed with me.
The woman who held Aaliyah’s hand.
The woman who cried during our first dance rehearsal.
Then I saw the woman standing in front of her daughter.
And I didn’t know which one was real.
Malcolm finally spoke.
“Maya, there’s more.””
Everyone turned.
Maya looked at him.
“What?””
He hesitated.
Then he looked at Simone.
“You should hear it from her.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Hear what?””
Simone’s face went pale.
“No.””
Malcolm looked at me.
“The reason she left wasn’t just because she wanted a new life.””
The room went silent.
“Then why?””
Nobody answered.
I stepped forward.
“Why did you leave your daughter?””
Simone looked at Maya.
Then at me.
Then at Aaliyah.
Her expression changed.
Like she was finally seeing the damage her silence had caused.
“I thought I was protecting them.””
Them.
Not her.
Them.
I noticed.
“Who is them?””
Simone’s breathing became uneven.
Before she could answer, a loud crash came from outside the ballroom.
Everyone turned.
The doors opened.
A man in a dark suit rushed inside.
He looked directly at Malcolm.
“We need to talk.””
Malcolm stood immediately.
“What happened?””
The man looked around.
Then his eyes landed on Simone.
His face changed.
“You’re here.””
Simone stepped backward.
“Who are you?””
The man stared at her.
“You don’t remember me?””
Nobody spoke.
May you like
Then he said:
“I’m the reason Simone disappeared twenty years ago.””
