Chapter 13: The Truth Beneath the Silence
Nobody spoke.
The elderly woman’s words settled over the room like a final warning.
Not a threat.
A reminder.
Twenty years of silence had finally reached its breaking point.
Simone looked at her.
“Mom…”
The woman’s expression softened.
“I’m not here to punish you.””
Her voice trembled.
“I’m here because I’m tired of watching everyone carry pain that started with one person’s choices.””
Terrence looked away.
For the first time since he entered the wedding, he looked uncomfortable.
I noticed.
And I realized something.
People who tell the truth usually want it heard.
People who hide things usually want control over when the truth appears.
Terrence had walked into my wedding thinking he controlled the moment.
Now he didn’t.
The elderly woman stepped closer.
“My name is Evelyn.””
She looked at Maya.
“I’m sorry you had to learn everything this way.””
Maya wiped her tears.
“I just wanted to know why.””
Evelyn nodded.
“I know.””
Then she looked at Simone.
“And you owe her that.””
Simone closed her eyes.
“I do.””
The honesty was painful.
But it was the first honest thing she had said without someone forcing it out.
I stood quietly.
Waiting.
Because after everything that happened, I didn’t want pieces anymore.
I wanted the whole story.
Evelyn looked at everyone.
“Twenty years ago, Simone discovered that Terrence was hiding money from her family.””
Terrence immediately interrupted.
“That’s not true.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“You’re still doing it.””
“Doing what?””
“Pretending you’re the victim.””
The room became silent.
Evelyn continued.
“Simone found financial records that showed money disappearing from her father’s company.””
I looked at Simone.
She nodded slowly.
“I confronted him.””
Terrence laughed.
“You were young and confused.””
“No.””
Simone’s voice became stronger.
“I was young. But I wasn’t confused.””
Malcolm stepped beside her.
“I believed her.””
Terrence looked at him.
“You always did.””
“Because she was telling the truth.””
Terrence shook his head.
“You don’t know everything.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Neither do you.””
That made him pause.
I watched his face.
A person confident in their innocence usually wants to explain.
Terrence wanted everyone distracted.
That told me enough.
Simone continued.
“When I found out, I wanted to report it.””
Maya looked at her.
“Then why didn’t you?””
Simone looked down.
“Because he threatened me.””
Terrence rolled his eyes.
“Again with this.””
Simone ignored him.
“He told me if I exposed him, he would destroy my family.””
Evelyn nodded.
“He knew where every weakness was.””
She looked at Maya.
“He knew Simone’s biggest fear was losing the people she loved.””
I looked at Simone.
“And that’s why you left?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
I waited.
“But not because I wanted a new life.””
Her eyes moved to Maya.
“I left because I thought disappearing was the only way to protect everyone.””
Maya’s face tightened.
“You left me to protect me?””
Simone started crying.
“I know how that sounds.””
“It sounds like you made a decision for me.””
The words hit hard.
Because they were true.
Simone nodded.
“Yes.””
Maya looked away.
“I spent years thinking you didn’t love me.””
Simone covered her mouth.
“I loved you every day.””
“Then why didn’t you come back?””
No answer.
The silence was brutal.
Finally, Simone whispered:
“Because every year I waited made coming back harder.””
Maya looked at her.
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
Simone nodded.
“It isn’t.””
She wiped her tears.
“The truth is… I was ashamed.””
The room stayed quiet.
“I had already lost so much. I was afraid you would hate me.””
Maya laughed sadly.
“I would have been angry.””
She looked at her.
“But I would have wanted my mother.””
Simone broke.
Aaliyah watched silently.
I looked at my daughter.
She was seeing something complicated.
That people could hurt you and still love you.
That people could regret things and still have to face them.
Evelyn looked at me.
“Darius, I know you probably hate my daughter right now.””
I didn’t answer immediately.
Because hate wasn’t the right word.
“I don’t hate her.””
Everyone looked surprised.
“I don’t know her anymore.””
Simone looked down.
“And that might be worse.””
She nodded.
“I understand.””
For the first time, she didn’t try to convince me.
She accepted it.
Terrence suddenly stepped forward.
“You’re all acting like she’s innocent.””
Everyone looked at him.
He pointed at Simone.
“She lied to everyone.””
Simone nodded.
“Yes.””
The answer surprised him.
“She did.””
She looked at him.
“But you don’t get to use my mistakes to hide yours.””
Terrence’s expression changed.
Evelyn smiled sadly.
“There she is.””
The Simone who fought.
The woman who had disappeared beneath years of fear.
Terrence’s phone suddenly rang.
He looked down.
His face changed.
A second later, he silenced it.
Malcolm noticed.
“Who was that?””
Terrence ignored him.
“None of your business.””
Malcolm stepped closer.
“Interesting.””
“What?””
“You’re nervous.””
Terrence stared at him.
And I saw it.
A crack.
A small one.
But it was there.
Malcolm looked at me.
“Darius, there’s one more thing.””
I felt exhausted.
Another thing.
Another secret.
But I nodded.
“What?””
Malcolm looked at Terrence.
“The reason he came here today wasn’t to expose Simone.””
Everyone froze.
Terrence’s face went pale.
“He came because he thought Simone still had something he needed.””
Simone looked confused.
“What?””
Malcolm looked at her.
“The original documents.””
Her expression changed.
“What documents?””
Malcolm stared at Terrence.
“The ones proving what he did.””
Terrence took a step back.
May you like
And for the first time…
He looked afraid.
