Chapter 7: The Daughter at the Door

The word “abandoned” stayed in the air.

It was heavier than the flowers hanging behind the altar.

Heavier than the wedding ring still sitting untouched on the small table beside us.

Heavier than every promise Simone had made to me.

Maya stood at the entrance, staring at the woman who was supposed to be her mother.

Simone stared back.

For the first time since I met her, she had no control over the moment.

No carefully chosen words.

No explanation ready.

No way to redirect the conversation.

Just a mother and daughter standing across a room full of strangers.

“Mom?””

Maya’s voice cracked.

Simone took one step forward.

“Maya…”

The young woman shook her head.

“No.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Don’t say my name like you know me.””

The guests became silent.

Even the people who had been whispering earlier stopped.

Nobody wanted to miss what came next.

I looked at Malcolm.

He looked down.

Like he had expected this moment but still wasn’t ready for it.

Aaliyah held my hand tighter.

I looked down at her.

She was watching Maya.

Not with judgment.

With confusion.

Because to her, a mother was supposed to stay.

A family was supposed to protect you.

And right now, she was watching someone prove that wasn’t always true.

Simone wiped her face.

“I never wanted you to find out this way.””

Maya laughed bitterly.

“Find out what way?””

She stepped farther into the room.

“That my mother was alive?””

Simone froze.

The sentence hit everyone.

Alive?

I looked at Malcolm.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

Maya looked at me.

Then at my daughter.

“I’m sorry.””

Her voice softened.

“I didn’t mean to ruin your wedding.””

I wanted to say something.

Anything.

But I didn’t know what to say.

Because somehow, I was standing beside my daughter while another daughter stood in front of a mother who had disappeared.

The pain in that room belonged to more people than just me.

Simone moved closer.

“Maya, please let me explain.””

Maya stared at her.

“You had twenty years.””

Simone stopped.

“Twenty years,” Maya repeated.

“And you couldn’t explain once?””

Simone’s lips trembled.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

Maya’s expression changed.

Not anger.

Something deeper.

Disappointment.

“Protecting me from what?””

Simone looked away.

That was enough.

Maya nodded slowly.

“That’s what I thought.””

I looked at Simone.

“How old were you when you left?””

She closed her eyes.

“Twenty-four.””

Maya looked at me.

“She was old enough to know exactly what she was doing.””

Simone flinched.

Malcolm stepped forward.

“Maya.””

She looked at him.

“You knew too.””

The accusation made him go quiet.

I looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Maya’s eyes moved back to Simone.

“I spent my whole life thinking everyone abandoned me because I wasn’t enough.””

Her voice broke.

“Then I found the records.””

My stomach tightened.

The same records Malcolm mentioned.

Maya continued.

“I found out my mother didn’t disappear.””

She looked directly at Simone.

“She chose to disappear.””

Simone started crying.

“I was scared.””

Maya shook her head.

“No.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“You were selfish.””

The word cut through the room.

Simone lowered her head.

And she didn’t deny it.

That hurt.

Because part of me wanted her to fight.

I wanted her to say something that made sense.

I wanted a reason big enough to explain everything.

But there was no reason big enough.

Not for me.

Not for Maya.

Not for Aaliyah.

I turned away for a moment.

The wedding hall suddenly felt too bright.

Too perfect.

The white flowers.

The white dress.

The fake image of purity.

Everything looked like a lie.

Maya looked at me.

“I’m sorry you found out like this.””

I nodded.

“Thank you.””

She looked surprised.

“For what?””

“For telling the truth.””

Simone looked at me.

Pain crossed her face.

“Darius…”

I looked at her.

“I don’t know who I married.””

She closed her eyes.

Those words hurt her.

But they were true.

Maya took a deep breath.

“I didn’t come here to destroy your wedding.””

She reached into her bag.

“I came because there’s something else you need to know.””

The room went quiet again.

Malcolm’s face changed.

“Maya.””

She ignored him.

“I found this in the records.””

She pulled out a folded document.

Simone immediately stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone noticed.

Because it wasn’t fear this time.

It was panic.

Real panic.

I looked at the paper.

“What is it?””

Maya looked at her mother.

Then at me.

“It’s the reason she changed her identity.””

My heart started pounding.

Simone whispered:

“Maya, please don’t.””

May you like

But Maya unfolded the document.

And the first sentence was enough to make Malcolm go pale.
