Chapter 6: The Stranger Who Called Her Mom

The phone screen stayed between us like a weapon.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody spoke.

But everyone understood.

Something had changed.

Before, Simone’s secrets belonged to the past.

Now the past was walking toward us.

I looked at Malcolm.

“What did Maya find out?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at Simone.

And that told me everything.

This wasn’t just about me anymore.

It wasn’t just about a wedding.

It was about a daughter who had been living without the truth.

Simone stepped forward.

“Give me the phone.””

Malcolm held it back.

“No.””

Her voice became desperate.

“Malcolm, please.””

The same word.

Again.

But this time, I heard something different.

Not manipulation.

Fear.

Real fear.

I watched her carefully.

For the first time all day, I wondered if there was a part of Simone that had been suffering too.

But sympathy couldn’t erase what she had done.

Malcolm looked at her.

“She deserves the truth.””

“She’s my daughter.””

“And that’s exactly why she deserves it.””

Simone’s eyes filled with tears.

“You don’t know what this will do to her.””

Malcolm’s voice lowered.

“You mean you don’t know what your choices will do to her.””

Silence.

I looked at Janelle.

“Who is Maya to you?””

Janelle hesitated.

Then she answered.

“I helped raise her.””

That surprised me.

I looked at Simone.

“So you weren’t in her life?””

Simone looked away.

“I was.””

Malcolm shook his head.

“Not enough.””

The words were cruel.

But Simone didn’t fight them.

That was what scared me.

Because every time someone accused her, she didn’t deny the details.

She only denied the pain.

I looked down at Aaliyah.

She was exhausted.

Her eyes were red from crying.

I hated that she was still standing there.

I hated that the adults around her had turned her special day into something she would never forget.

I called one of the wedding coordinators.

“Can someone take my daughter to the private room?””

Aaliyah immediately grabbed my hand.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“Baby…”

“I want to stay.””

I knelt.

“You don’t have to watch this.””

She looked toward Simone.

Then back at me.

“I want to know if she was telling the truth.””

That sentence stunned me.

Because my eight-year-old daughter was trying to understand betrayal.

Something adults couldn’t even explain.

I hugged her.

“Okay.””

I stood beside her.

Then I faced Simone.

“Tell me everything.””

She looked terrified.

“I don’t know where to start.””

“The beginning.””

She took a shaky breath.

“When I met you, I had already left my old life behind.””

“Your husband?””

She nodded.

“And your daughter?””

Another nod.

I felt my jaw tighten.

“Why?””

Her eyes dropped.

“Because I made choices I wasn’t proud of.””

Malcolm interrupted.

“You left because you wanted a different life.””

Simone looked at him.

“That’s not fair.””

“Isn’t it?””

She stared at him.

For a moment, the two of them looked like people who had shared something far deeper than anyone in that room understood.

History.

Pain.

Regret.

I looked at Malcolm.

“Why are you really here?””

Everyone became quiet.

Because that was the question I had been avoiding.

The question beneath every other question.

Why today?

Why my wedding?

Why now?

Malcolm looked at me.

“I came because I found out she was going to marry you without telling you.””

“And?””

“And because Maya found something.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What?””

He looked at Simone.

She immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Malcolm continued.

“She found the records.””

Simone’s face went pale.

“What records?””

I looked between them.

“What records?””

Nobody answered.

Then Malcolm said:

“The ones showing Simone didn’t just leave her marriage.””

The ballroom went silent.

“She erased herself.””

A chill moved through me.

“What does that mean?””

Simone stepped backward.

“Malcolm, stop.””

But he didn’t.

“She changed everything.””

My heart started racing.

“Everything?””

Malcolm nodded.

“Her name. Her history. The truth about what happened.””

I looked at Simone.

“Why?””

For the first time all day, she looked completely broken.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Broken.

“I was trying to escape.””

“From what?””

She looked at Malcolm.

Then at the photograph.

Then at me.

And before she could answer, the ballroom doors opened again.

Everyone turned.

A young woman stood there.

Her face was wet with tears.

She looked at Simone.

Not with anger.

With heartbreak.

“Mom?””

Simone stopped breathing.

Aaliyah looked up.

I looked at the stranger standing at the entrance.

And I knew.

This was Maya.

The daughter Simone had hidden from everyone.

Maya took one step inside.

May you like

Then she said the words that made Simone collapse.

“I finally found out why you abandoned me.””
