Chapter 3: The Secret Waiting at the Door

The stranger standing at the ballroom entrance didn’t move.

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

It felt like the entire wedding had stopped breathing.

The music was silent.

The cameras were still recording.

The flowers that had cost thousands of dollars surrounded us like a beautiful lie.

Simone stared at the doorway.

Her lips parted.

“Janelle…”

I looked at her.

That was the first time I had ever heard that name.

Malcolm watched Simone carefully.

“Looks like you remember.””

Simone shook her head.

“No.””

But her voice was weak.

A lie.

I knew it.

Everyone knew it.

The woman named Janelle stepped into the room.

She was dressed simply, unlike the guests wearing expensive suits and gowns. She looked nervous, but she kept walking.

Her eyes found Simone first.

Then Malcolm.

Then me.

Then Aaliyah.

Her expression changed when she saw my daughter.

I noticed.

And I didn’t like it.

I moved closer to Aaliyah.

“Who is she?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

That was becoming a pattern.

I looked at Simone.

“Who is Janelle?””

Simone rubbed her forehead.

“Darius, please.””

“No.””

My voice echoed through the room.

“I am done hearing ‘please’ without answers.””

Janelle stopped a few feet away.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“For what?””

She looked at Simone.

“For not coming sooner.””

My stomach tightened.

Malcolm stepped beside her.

“She knows what happened.””

Simone’s eyes flashed.

“Malcolm, don’t.””

He ignored her.

“Darius deserves the truth.””

I looked around.

The guests who had come to celebrate were now witnesses.

I hated that.

I hated that my daughter was standing there in her flower-girl dress, watching adults destroy everything around her.

I knelt beside her.

“Aaliyah, do you want to go with Aunt Denise for a little while?””

She looked at me.

“No.””

Her voice was small.

“I want to stay with you.””

I swallowed.

“Okay.””

She held onto my hand.

Simone saw it.

And something in her expression changed.

Maybe guilt.

Maybe regret.

But it was too late.

Janelle took a breath.

“Simone wasn’t supposed to marry you.””

The room reacted instantly.

A few guests whispered.

I felt my jaw tighten.

“What does that mean?””

Janelle looked at Malcolm.

Then back at me.

“She was supposed to finish something first.””

Simone stepped forward.

“That’s enough.””

“No,” Malcolm said.

His voice was harder now.

“That’s exactly where you always stop people.””

Simone stared at him.

“You don’t know what I went through.””

Malcolm’s expression changed.

For the first time, I saw anger.

Real anger.

“You disappeared.””

The words hit the room.

Simone went still.

“You left without telling anyone.””

“That’s not true.””

“Then tell him.””

She looked away.

Malcolm continued.

“You changed your name.””

A few guests gasped.

I felt cold.

My mind raced through memories.

The stories Simone told me about her past.

The vague answers.

The missing details.

The way she always changed the subject when I asked about old friends.

I thought those were just personal boundaries.

Now they looked different.

Janelle spoke quietly.

“She wasn’t just hiding a divorce.””

Simone’s face turned toward her.

“Stop talking.””

Janelle looked down.

“I’m sorry.””

Then she looked at me.

“But you need to know what you’re about to marry into.””

The sentence hung in the air.

Marry into.

Not marry.

Like I was entering something I didn’t understand.

I stood up.

“What did Simone hide from me?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Malcolm.

He looked at Simone.

Then he reached into his pocket again.

This time, he pulled out a folded document.

Simone immediately started walking toward him.

“Don’t.””

Malcolm held it away.

“You should have told him before today.””

“Please.””

“Before he bought the ring.””

“Malcolm.””

“Before his daughter called you family.””

That last sentence made Simone stop.

Her eyes moved to Aaliyah.

For a moment, she looked truly broken.

Then Malcolm unfolded the paper.

I couldn’t see the details from where I stood.

But I saw the heading.

And I saw Simone’s reaction.

She looked terrified.

“What is that?”” I asked.

Malcolm lifted his eyes.

“It’s the reason she could never give you the future she promised.””

I stepped closer.

“Give me the paper.””

He looked at Simone one last time.

Then he handed it to me.

My fingers touched the page.

And before I could read the first line, Simone whispered:

“Darius… if you read that, you’ll never look at me the same way again.””

I looked down at the document.

At the name printed across the top.

May you like

And I realized the wedding was not falling apart because Malcolm had arrived.

It was falling apart because Simone’s past had finally found its way to the altar.
