Chapter 2: The Man Behind the Ring

I don’t remember hearing the gasps after Malcolm’s announcement.

I remember Aaliyah’s hand in mine.

I remember the sound of her crying quietly.

And I remember looking at Simone, waiting for her to tell me I had misunderstood.

That she would laugh.

That she would explain.

Anything.

But she didn’t.

She just stood there.

Frozen.

The woman who had chosen every flower, every song, every detail of our wedding was suddenly unable to say a single word.

Malcolm looked around the room.

“This is not how I wanted to do this.””

His voice was calm.

Almost too calm.

A person who was angry would have yelled.

A person who wanted revenge would have smiled.

Malcolm did neither.

He looked tired.

Like someone who had carried a heavy secret for years.

I stepped between him and Simone.

“Don’t come any closer.””

Malcolm stopped.

“I’m not here to hurt anyone.””

I laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“You walked into my wedding and told everyone my fiancée is still married.””

His eyes moved toward Aaliyah.

Then back to me.

“I know.””

“Then you understand why I need answers.””

He nodded.

“I do.””

Simone finally found her voice.

“Malcolm, please.””

Everyone turned toward her.

Please.

That one word told me more than any confession could have.

Because Simone wasn’t saying it like someone talking to a stranger.

She was saying it like someone begging someone who knew everything.

Malcolm’s expression softened slightly.

“You had years to tell him.””

Simone swallowed.

“You don’t understand.””

“No,” Malcolm replied.

“I understand exactly.””

I looked at Simone.

“What is he talking about?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Aaliyah squeezed my hand harder.

“Dad…”

I looked down.

Her face was full of fear.

Not because she understood the marriage.

She didn’t.

She understood that something was wrong.

And children always know when adults are pretending.

I bent down.

“Stay right next to me.””

She nodded.

Simone took a step forward.

“Darius, I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

The entire room waited.

She looked at Malcolm.

Then at the guests.

Then at me.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

She stayed silent.

“When were you going to tell me you had a husband?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“After the wedding?””

The question came out colder than I intended.

But I couldn’t stop it.

Malcolm looked down.

“You deserve the truth before you say those vows.””

I stared at him.

“What truth?””

He reached into his jacket again.

This time, he pulled out a small envelope.

Simone immediately stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone heard it.

The panic in her voice.

Malcolm held the envelope tightly.

“This is why I came.””

“What is that?”” I asked.

Simone shook her head.

“Darius, please don’t listen to him.””

I turned toward her.

“You have spent the last ten minutes telling my daughter she doesn’t belong in our family. Now you’re asking me not to listen?””

She flinched.

Aaliyah looked up at me.

I hated that she had to see this.

I hated that a day meant to be beautiful had become something she would remember forever.

A woman near the front row stood up.

“Simone, is this true?””

Simone looked around.

All those faces.

All those people who came to celebrate her.

Now they were waiting for answers.

She whispered:

“It’s complicated.””

Malcolm shook his head.

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“It’s not complicated.””

He looked directly at me.

“She knew exactly what she was doing.””

My chest tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Malcolm didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at the wedding decorations.

The flowers.

The aisle.

The ring waiting near the altar.

Then he said:

“You’re not the first man she promised forever to.””

The room went silent again.

Simone wiped a tear from her cheek.

“Stop.””

Malcolm looked at her.

“Why?””

Her voice became desperate.

“Because you don’t know what happened.””

“Then tell him.””

She looked at me.

I waited.

Seconds passed.

Finally, she whispered:

“I was young.””

That was it.

That was her explanation.

I stared at her.

“You were young?””

She nodded quickly.

“I made mistakes.””

Malcolm laughed quietly.

“A mistake is forgetting an anniversary.””

He looked at the ring on his hand.

“This was a marriage.””

My eyes dropped to the ring.

A real wedding ring.

Not a rumor.

Not a misunderstanding.

A marriage.

I thought about every night Simone told me she had no secrets.

Every time she said she believed honesty was the foundation of love.

Every time she held my daughter and promised she would always protect her.

I felt something inside me break.

Not because of Malcolm.

Because I realized I had fallen in love with someone who had only shown me the parts of herself she wanted me to see.

I turned away from the altar.

“I need a minute.””

Simone reached for my arm.

“Darius.””

I pulled back.

“Don’t.””

The word hurt her.

I saw it.

But I couldn’t pretend.

Then Malcolm’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

Not fear.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

He answered.

“Hello?””

Everyone watched him listen.

Then his eyes slowly moved toward Simone.

“What?””

Simone’s face became pale.

“Who is it?”” I asked.

Malcolm didn’t answer.

He ended the call.

Then he looked at me and said:

“There’s someone else who needs to be here.””

May you like

The ballroom doors opened behind us.

And the person standing there made Simone whisper a name I had never heard before.
