Chapter 11: The Room Nobody Entered

Nobody moved.

The sound upstairs echoed through the house.

A door.

Opening.

Marcus immediately turned toward the staircase.

“Stay here.””

Jordan stood.

“No.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Jordan.””

“You said Mom trusted me to find the truth.””

Marcus paused.

Jordan continued.

“I’m not hiding.””

For a moment, Marcus saw something familiar.

Not his son being reckless.

His son becoming someone stronger.

Marcus nodded.

“Stay behind me.””

Nia grabbed a heavy candle holder from the table.

Jordan looked at her.

“Seriously?””

She shrugged.

“You think I’m staying downstairs?””

Despite everything, Jordan almost smiled.

Almost.

The three of them moved upstairs.

Vanessa and Evelyn followed.

The hallway was dark.

The bright living room behind them felt miles away.

Marcus reached the bedroom door.

It was open.

Again.

He pushed it.

Empty.

Jordan looked around.

Nothing.

No person.

No movement.

Then Nia noticed something.

“Wait.””

Everyone turned.

She pointed toward the closet.

The door was slightly open.

Marcus approached slowly.

He opened it.

Inside were old boxes.

Nothing else.

Then Jordan noticed something on the floor.

A photograph.

He picked it up.

His face changed.

It was a picture of his mother.

But she wasn’t alone.

She was standing beside Raymond.

And beside them was another person.

Someone Jordan had never seen.

A young man.

Marcus took the photograph.

“Who is that?””

Vanessa looked at it.

Her expression changed instantly.

“Where did you find this?””

Jordan stared.

“You know him.””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Evelyn took the photo.

Then whispered:

“That’s Daniel.””

Marcus frowned.

“Who is Daniel?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“The reason your wife started investigating.””

Nobody understood.

Jordan looked at her.

“Explain.””

Evelyn pointed at the photo.

“Daniel was Raymond’s assistant.””

“So?””

“He disappeared.””

Marcus stared.

“When?””

“Eight years ago.””

The same time.

Jordan felt the connection forming.

“What does that have to do with Mom?””

Vanessa answered.

“He knew everything.””

Marcus looked at her.

“About the money?””

“Yes.””

“Then why disappear?””

Nobody answered.

Because they all knew.

Something had happened.

Nia searched the room.

“There’s something else.””

She pulled open a drawer.

Inside was a small notebook.

Marcus took it.

The first page had his wife’s handwriting.

Jordan watched his father read.

His expression changed with every line.

“What?””

Marcus looked up.

“She was tracking dates.””

“Dates for what?””

He turned the notebook around.

Names.

Meetings.

Locations.

And one repeated phrase.

“Second page.””

Jordan looked at Vanessa.

“Why does everyone care about that page?””

Vanessa looked exhausted.

“Because it proves who owns the house.””

Marcus frowned.

“That’s it?””

“No.””

She looked at the notebook.

“It proves who planned everything.””

Jordan felt cold.

The second page wasn’t just legal proof.

It was evidence.

Evidence of a bigger plan.

Marcus continued reading.

Then stopped.

“What?””

He looked at Vanessa.

“Your signature.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“What?””

“Your mother’s notes say you signed the original agreement willingly.””

Vanessa looked away.

“Yes.””

Jordan stared.

“Then why pretend you owned the house?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with regret.

“Because Raymond forced me to.””

Marcus looked angry.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I thought I could fix it.””

The same words.

Again.

Jordan shook his head.

“Everyone keeps saying they were trying to fix things.””

He looked around the room.

“But nobody protected us.””

Nobody had an answer.

Then Marcus noticed something.

A final page in the notebook.

A sentence written alone.

He read it quietly.

“Raymond doesn’t want the house.””

Jordan looked at him.

“Then what does he want?””

Marcus turned the page.

His face changed.

“He wants Jordan.””

The room went completely still.

Jordan felt his stomach drop.

“What?””

Marcus looked at the handwriting.

His wife’s handwriting.

“Your mother wrote that Raymond’s entire plan depended on you.””

Nia stepped closer.

“Why?””

Before Marcus could answer, the lights went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Someone screamed.

A sound came from downstairs.

The front door slammed shut.

Marcus grabbed his phone flashlight.

“Everyone stay together.””

Then a voice came from the hallway.

Not from outside.

Inside the house.

A man’s voice.

Calm.

Familiar.

“You finally found the notebook.””

Jordan froze.

May you like

Because he knew that voice.

Uncle Raymond.
