Chapter 8: The Evidence Nobody Was Supposed to Find

The words felt impossible.

Jordan stared at Vanessa.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Someone tried to kill his mother.

The sentence didn’t belong in their living room.

It belonged in movies.

In news stories.

Not here.

Not with his family.

Marcus’s voice was barely above a whisper.

“Take that back.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I can’t.””

“You’re saying someone tried to kill my wife?””

“Yes.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“She was afraid.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

Evelyn’s eyes softened.

“Because she believed you would go after the person responsible.””

Marcus stared.

“And?””

“And she was afraid you wouldn’t come back.””

The room went quiet.

Jordan looked at his father.

He knew Marcus.

He knew exactly what Evelyn meant.

His father would have confronted anyone.

Family or not.

Marcus looked down.

“What happened?””

Vanessa sat slowly.

Her anger was gone.

Her control was gone.

Only exhaustion remained.

“Your mother found the financial records.””

Marcus remained standing.

“Then?””

“She confronted Raymond.””

Jordan’s face tightened.

“Uncle Raymond?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He denied everything.””

“And you believed him?””

Vanessa looked at Jordan.

“No.””

That surprised him.

“I didn’t.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Then why protect him?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“I wasn’t protecting him.””

“Then what were you doing?””

“I was protecting your wife.””

Nobody expected that answer.

Vanessa continued.

“Your mother found out too much too quickly. Raymond realized she knew.””

Evelyn nodded.

“That’s why she hid the evidence.””

Marcus looked at the photo.

“Under the house.””

“Yes.””

Jordan stared at the floor.

“Why didn’t Mom just call the police?””

Evelyn answered quietly.

“Because she didn’t know who she could trust.””

The words hurt.

Because they made sense.

Jordan looked at Vanessa.

“But why would Mom trust you?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Because she knew I was guilty of something.””

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I helped Raymond move money.””

The room went silent.

Jordan’s mouth opened slightly.

“You admitted it?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at the family photos.

“Because I thought I could control him.””

She laughed softly.

“I was wrong.””

Marcus stared.

“You helped him steal.””

“Yes.””

“And my wife found out.””

“Yes.””

“And then you warned her.””

“Yes.””

Marcus shook his head.

“I don’t understand.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I was scared.””

“Of Raymond?””

She nodded.

“He wasn’t the person I thought he was.””

Evelyn looked toward the photograph.

“Your mother knew that.””

Jordan walked closer.

“So what’s under the house?””

Nobody answered.

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

“Do you know?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Vanessa looked away.

“But I know where it is.””

Everyone turned.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Where?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then pointed toward the living room.

“Under the original floorboards.””

Jordan looked down.

The modern flooring.

The renovated room.

The place where they had spent years making memories.

“She hid it here?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Your mother told me something before she died.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“She said if anything happened to her, the person who found the evidence would be the one who deserved to know the truth.””

Jordan looked at the document.

“And she knew I would find the envelope?””

“Yes.””

Marcus looked at him.

Jordan felt overwhelmed.

His mother had planned everything.

A message through time.

A warning.

A final attempt to protect them.

Nia suddenly looked at the photo.

“Wait.””

Everyone turned.

She pointed.

“There’s something wrong.””

“What?””

Nia picked up the photograph.

“The date.””

Marcus looked.

The back of the photo had a handwritten date.

Three months before their mother died.

“That’s when Mom supposedly stopped trusting everyone.””

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.””

Nia turned the photograph over.

“She didn’t hide this after she found out.””

She looked at everyone.

“She hid this before.””

Jordan felt cold.

“What are you saying?””

Nia pointed at the handwriting.

“She knew something was coming.””

A sudden sound interrupted them.

A loud crash.

From outside.

Everyone turned toward the windows.

Marcus moved quickly.

“What was that?””

Nobody answered.

Then Jordan saw it.

A shadow moving past the window.

Someone was outside.

Watching.

Marcus walked toward the door.

“Stay here.””

Jordan followed.

“No.””

Marcus looked back.

“Jordan.””

“I’m tired of staying behind.””

For a moment, Marcus said nothing.

Then he nodded.

Together, they moved toward the front door.

Marcus opened it.

The porch was empty.

But something was sitting on the ground.

A small envelope.

No name.

No address.

Just one sentence written across the front.

Jordan picked it up.

His hands shook.

Because the handwriting was not his mother’s.

Marcus looked over his shoulder.

“What does it say?””

Jordan turned the envelope around.

May you like

Three words.

“Ask Vanessa first.””
