Chapter 13: The Man Who Never Disappeared
Jordan stared at the photo until the screen blurred.
Daniel.
Alive.
Standing inside his mother’s old office.
A man everyone believed had vanished eight years ago.
A man connected to Raymond.
A man connected to the secret his mother had spent years hiding.
Nobody spoke.
Then Marcus took the phone from Jordan’s hand.
“Where did you get this?””
Jordan looked at him.
“My phone.””
Marcus looked at the unknown number.
Then back at the photo.
“This was sent seconds ago.””
Evelyn stepped closer.
“Raymond sent it.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She looked terrified.
“Raymond wouldn’t show us Daniel.””
“Why not?”” Marcus asked.
“Because Daniel is the one person who can destroy him.””
The words landed heavily.
Jordan looked at the picture again.
“Then why show us?””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew.
It was a trap.
A message designed to pull them somewhere.
Marcus grabbed his keys.
“We’re going to the office.””
Vanessa immediately stopped him.
“No.””
Marcus turned.
“You don’t get to tell me no anymore.””
The sentence hurt her.
But she accepted it.
“If Raymond wants you there, he has a reason.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“And if Daniel is alive, I need answers.””
Evelyn nodded.
“She’s right about one thing.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Raymond doesn’t give information away.””
Jordan watched them.
For years, he thought adults always knew what they were doing.
Now he realized something terrifying.
They were just better at hiding their fear.
Nia took Jordan’s arm.
“Are you okay?””
Jordan looked at her.
“No.””
The honesty surprised her.
“I keep thinking about Mom.””
Nia squeezed his arm.
“Me too.””
Jordan looked at the photo.
“I thought I knew her.””
Nia shook her head.
“We did.””
“But she knew all this was coming.””
“She was still our mom.””
Jordan looked down.
That was the hardest part.
The secrets didn’t erase the memories.
They just changed them.
Marcus opened the front door.
“We go together.””
Nobody argued.
The drive was silent.
The house disappeared behind them, but Jordan couldn’t stop thinking about the note.
Find the second page.
His mother had known.
She had prepared.
But she had never told him why.
When they arrived at the old office building, Marcus stopped the car.
Jordan looked up.
The building was abandoned.
The windows were dark.
“This is where Mom worked?””
Marcus nodded.
“She rented the office after she started investigating.””
Vanessa looked out the window.
“I thought Raymond destroyed everything here.””
Evelyn looked at her.
“You thought wrong.””
They entered through a side door.
The building smelled old.
Dust.
Paper.
Time.
Marcus used his phone flashlight.
“Daniel?””
No answer.
They moved deeper inside.
Jordan saw old office signs.
Empty rooms.
Broken furniture.
Then they reached the final door.
His mother’s office.
Marcus opened it.
Inside, everything was covered in dust.
Except one desk.
Someone had cleaned it recently.
Jordan noticed.
“Someone was here.””
Marcus nodded.
On the desk sat a small envelope.
Jordan knew the handwriting immediately.
His mother’s.
His breathing changed.
“Dad.””
Marcus picked it up.
The front said:
“For Jordan.””
Jordan reached for it.
His hands shook.
Inside was a letter.
Not a recording.
Not a clue.
A real letter.
His mother’s words.
Jordan read silently.
My sweet Jordan,
If you are reading this, then I was right to believe you would look for answers.
His eyes filled.
I know you may feel angry that I kept secrets from you.
Jordan swallowed.
She was right.
But I never wanted you to carry the weight of adult problems. I wanted you to have a childhood.
He continued.
There is something you need to know about Daniel.
Jordan looked at the room.
Daniel was not Raymond’s partner.
Everyone froze.
Marcus looked over.
“What?””
Jordan kept reading.
Daniel was the person who helped me uncover the truth.
A silence followed.
Evelyn whispered:
“No.””
Jordan looked up.
“What?””
She shook her head.
“Raymond told everyone Daniel betrayed your mother.””
Jordan looked back at the letter.
Raymond wanted us to believe Daniel disappeared because he was guilty.
Jordan continued.
But Daniel disappeared because he was protecting evidence.
Marcus looked around the office.
“Where is he?””
A voice answered from behind them.
“Right here.””
Everyone turned.
Daniel stood in the doorway.
Older than the photo.
Tired.
But alive.
Jordan froze.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
Daniel looked at him.
“The person your wife trusted when nobody else would.””
Vanessa stared.
“You’re alive.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You knew I was.””
Her face changed.
Marcus turned.
“You knew?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
Jordan felt betrayed again.
Another secret.
Another person who knew.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Because your mother made me promise.””
Daniel stepped inside.
“Your mother knew Raymond would try to control the story.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Then tell me the truth.””
Daniel nodded.
“I will.””
He looked at Jordan.
“But first, you need to know why Raymond wanted the second page.””
Jordan tightened his grip on the letter.
“Why?””
Daniel’s expression became serious.
“Because the second page proves Raymond was never trying to steal this house.””
May you like
A pause.
“He was trying to steal your identity.””
