Chapter 9: The Confession Behind the Locked Door

Nobody touched the envelope.

It sat on the coffee table like it was dangerous.

Maybe it was.

Jordan had learned something that night.

Secrets were not just words.

Sometimes secrets were weapons.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“Who left that?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

She stared at the envelope.

“I don’t know.””

Evelyn immediately shook her head.

“You do.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“No.””

“You recognize the handwriting.””

Silence.

Jordan looked closer.

“You do, don’t you?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Who?””

Vanessa didn’t speak.

Marcus’s patience disappeared.

“Who?””

She whispered:

“Raymond.””

The name filled the room.

Jordan felt his chest tighten.

His uncle.

The man who used to call him “champ.””

The man who always said family came first.

Nia looked sick.

“No.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

Nia shook her head.

“No.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You’re telling me Uncle Raymond tried to hurt Mom?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Because the answer was obvious.

Marcus picked up the envelope.

He stared at it.

“Why would he send this?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“Because he wants me to take the blame.””

Evelyn nodded.

“That’s what he does.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You know him well.””

Evelyn’s expression darkened.

“Better than I wish I did.””

Jordan looked between them.

“How?””

Evelyn was quiet.

Then she said:

“Raymond was the reason I disappeared.””

Nobody moved.

Marcus looked confused.

“What?””

Evelyn took a breath.

“Eight years ago, I was helping your mother collect evidence.””

She looked at Vanessa.

“Then Raymond found out.””

Jordan listened carefully.

“He threatened you?””

Evelyn nodded.

“He told me if I didn’t leave, your mother would lose everything.””

Marcus clenched his jaw.

“And you left?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Evelyn looked toward Jordan.

“Because I believed him.””

Jordan understood.

She had chosen to disappear to protect his mother.

But she had still left her alone.

Marcus opened the envelope.

Inside was a single page.

He read it silently.

Then handed it to Evelyn.

She read it.

Her face changed.

“What?””

Marcus asked.

Evelyn looked up.

“He knows.””

Jordan frowned.

“He knows what?””

Evelyn folded the paper.

“That we found the deed.””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“No.””

Marcus stared.

“What else?””

Evelyn looked at Vanessa.

“He knows you told them the truth.””

Vanessa stood.

“We need to leave.””

Jordan looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because if Raymond knows we found this, he’ll come here.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

He picked up the document.

“He already came.””

Jordan frowned.

“What?””

Marcus pointed toward the hallway.

The damaged bedroom.

The missing items.

The warning note.

“He was here before we found the envelope.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“No.””

Marcus looked at her.

“He was searching for something.””

Evelyn whispered:

“The second page.””

Jordan remembered.

The missing second page from the deed.

The page that explained everything.

A phone suddenly rang.

Everyone froze.

Not Marcus’s phone.

Not Vanessa’s.

The house phone.

A number nobody used anymore.

Marcus stared.

“That line was disconnected.””

The phone rang again.

Jordan felt every hair on his arms rise.

The old phone sat on a small table near the kitchen.

It rang a third time.

Nobody moved.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“He knows.””

Marcus walked toward it.

“Don’t.””

Everyone turned.

Vanessa looked terrified.

“Don’t answer.””

Marcus stopped.

“Why?””

She stared at the phone.

“Because the last time that phone rang…”

Her voice broke.

“…your wife was still alive.””

The phone rang again.

Marcus slowly picked it up.

“Hello?””

Static.

Then a man’s voice.

Calm.

Familiar.

A voice Jordan knew.

“Marcus.””

Jordan felt the blood leave his face.

He knew that voice.

Everyone did.

Marcus’s hand tightened around the phone.

“Raymond.””

A pause.

Then Raymond spoke.

“I think it’s time we stop pretending your wife’s death was an accident.””

The room went completely silent.

Marcus’s eyes moved toward Jordan.

Then Nia.

Then Vanessa.

Raymond continued:

“Because your wife left one final message.””

Marcus swallowed.

“Where?””

The voice on the phone lowered.

“Ask Jordan.””

Jordan froze.

The phone slipped slightly in Marcus’s hand.

“What did you say?””

Raymond laughed quietly.

Then the call ended.

And on the screen of the old phone, one new message appeared.

A photo.

Jordan.

Standing beside the property document.

Taken inside the house.
