Chapter 3: The Name Written in the Margin

The room felt smaller after Vanessa said the name.

“Your wife’s attorney.””

Marcus didn’t move.

Jordan had seen his father angry before.

He had seen him frustrated.

He had seen him exhausted after long workdays.

But he had never seen him scared.

Not like this.

“Mom’s attorney?”” Nia asked.

Vanessa grabbed the door handle tighter.

“Yes.””

Marcus’s eyes stayed fixed on her.

“My wife’s attorney died three years ago.””

Vanessa froze.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Jordan noticed.

Nia noticed.

Marcus noticed most of all.

“Interesting,” Marcus said quietly.

Vanessa looked away.

“I misspoke.””

“You don’t just misspeak about dead people.””

She said nothing.

Jordan felt his heart pounding.

Every answer created two more questions.

His mother had left a warning.

Vanessa had a hidden document.

Now someone connected to his mother’s past was somehow sending messages.

And nobody wanted to explain why.

Marcus picked up the property document again.

“Nia.””

She looked at him.

“Did you search Mom’s drawer completely?””

“No.””

“Why not?””

“Because when I found the envelope, I heard Vanessa coming.””

Jordan looked at Vanessa.

“You knew Nia was there?””

Vanessa didn’t respond.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Were you looking for something?””

Vanessa’s face hardened again.

“You’re turning this into something it isn’t.””

Marcus laughed without humor.

“That’s exactly what someone says when they don’t want people looking.””

Vanessa opened the door.

Then stopped.

“Marcus.””

Everyone looked at her.

Her voice changed.

For the first time, it sounded less like anger.

More like a warning.

“If you open that door, there’s no going back.””

Jordan felt a chill.

Marcus stared at her.

“There was never going back after you tried to throw my son out.””

Vanessa looked at Jordan.

Something unreadable crossed her face.

Then she left.

The door closed.

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Finally, Jordan whispered:

“Dad…”

Marcus sat down slowly.

The strength in his shoulders disappeared.

“She knows something.””

Nia sat beside him.

“About Mom?””

Marcus looked at the document.

“About everything.””

Jordan looked at the family photos on the wall.

His mother smiling beside them.

A memory from a time when nobody knew there was a storm coming.

“Why would Mom hide something from us?””

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

Because he didn’t know.

And Jordan could tell that scared him more than anything.

A few minutes later, Marcus walked toward the kitchen and returned holding an old wooden box.

Jordan recognized it.

It belonged to his mother.

“What is that?””

Marcus placed it on the coffee table.

“I found this after the funeral.””

Nia frowned.

“Why didn’t you open it?””

Marcus looked at her.

“Because your mother left a note.””

Jordan leaned forward.

“What note?””

Marcus opened the box.

Inside were old photographs, letters, and a small key.

Underneath everything was a folded piece of paper.

Marcus unfolded it carefully.

His expression changed.

“What?””

Nia stood.

“What does it say?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Jordan looked over his shoulder.

The handwriting was familiar.

His mother’s handwriting.

Only one sentence was written.

“Trust the child who finds the envelope.””

Jordan felt his stomach drop.

Nia looked at him.

“You found it.””

Marcus looked between his children.

His eyes filled with confusion.

Then fear.

“Your mother knew someone would find it.””

Jordan shook his head.

“No.””

The room became silent.

“Dad… Mom knew I would find it.””

Marcus stared at him.

Before he could respond, the small key inside the box slid across the table.

A tiny metal tag attached to it flipped over.

A number was engraved on the back.

Marcus picked it up.

His face changed.

“What?””

Nia stepped closer.

“What is it?””

Marcus turned the key around.

And Jordan saw the number.

It matched a number written in the margin of the property document.

The same number nobody had noticed before.

Marcus reached for the document.

His hands were shaking now.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown caller.

Everyone stared at the screen.

Marcus answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

A voice Jordan didn’t recognize.

But his father did.

Marcus stood completely still.

“Where did you get this number?””

The woman said something quietly.

Marcus’s face drained.

Jordan whispered:

“Who is it?””

Marcus slowly lowered the phone.

May you like

And when he looked at Jordan, he said the one thing that made the entire room go silent.

“She says she’s your mother’s sister.””
