Chapter 7: The Name Beneath the Foundation
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The only sound in the living room was the faint hum of the air conditioner and the soft movement of paper in Marcus’s shaking hands.
A name.
That was what Vanessa had said.
Not money.
Not a contract.
Not a hidden account.
A name.
Jordan stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked away.
And that scared him more than if she had screamed.
Because Vanessa always had an answer.
She always had something sharp to say.
But now she looked like someone standing at the edge of a cliff.
“I don’t know,” she whispered.
Evelyn immediately shook her head.
“That’s a lie.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“You don’t know anything.””
“I know enough.””
Marcus stepped between them.
“No more.””
Both women stopped.
His voice was different now.
Not angry.
Not confused.
Final.
“I have spent years believing my wife trusted me with everything.””
He looked at the property document.
“Now I find out there were entire pieces of her life hidden from me.””
He looked at Vanessa.
“Then I find out you lied about Evelyn.””
Then he looked at the photograph.
“And now you’re both telling me my wife buried a secret under my own house.””
Nobody responded.
Marcus pointed toward the photo.
“I want the truth.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“You think the truth is simple?””
“No.””
Marcus looked at her.
“But I think it’s necessary.””
Jordan watched Vanessa carefully.
For the first time, she looked smaller.
Not physically.
Something deeper.
Like the person she had been pretending to be was disappearing.
Evelyn reached for the photograph.
“Your mother discovered something eight years ago.””
Jordan frowned.
“Eight years?””
“Yes.””
“What happened eight years ago?””
Evelyn looked at Marcus.
“You were working constantly. Jordan was seven. Nia was nine.””
Marcus slowly nodded.
“I remember.””
“Your wife started noticing money missing.””
Marcus’s face changed.
“What money?””
“Family trust money.””
The words landed heavily.
Nia stepped forward.
“Mom never said anything.””
“Because she didn’t want to destroy the family,” Evelyn replied.
Jordan looked at Vanessa.
“Was it you?””
Vanessa’s eyes moved toward him.
The question hurt her.
Or maybe it angered her.
Nobody could tell.
“You think everything is that easy?””
Jordan’s voice hardened.
“You tried to take my home.””
“I tried to protect something.””
“What?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
Silence.
Marcus moved closer.
“Vanessa.””
She finally looked up.
“Your wife found evidence.””
“Evidence of what?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Evelyn did.
“Fraud.””
Jordan felt his stomach drop.
Marcus stared at Vanessa.
“You’re saying my wife believed you were stealing?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I made mistakes.””
Marcus laughed quietly.
“Mistakes?””
His voice cracked.
“You forged documents.””
Nobody moved.
Jordan looked at Vanessa.
“Is that true?””
Vanessa’s silence answered.
Nia stepped backward.
“No.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“Nia—”
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“You were part of our family.””
Vanessa’s expression softened.
“I loved your mother.””
Evelyn immediately replied.
“People can love someone and still hurt them.””
The sentence stayed in the room.
Jordan looked at the photograph again.
“Then why hide a name?””
Evelyn reached into her bag.
She removed a folded piece of paper.
“Because the person your mother discovered wasn’t working alone.””
Marcus took the paper.
He opened it.
Inside were several names.
Most were unfamiliar.
Until he reached the bottom.
His face changed.
Jordan noticed.
“Dad?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Nia looked over his shoulder.
Then gasped.
“Why is Uncle Raymond’s name there?””
Jordan froze.
Uncle Raymond.
His father’s older brother.
A man who had attended every birthday.
Every holiday.
A man who always brought gifts and joked with him.
Marcus slowly sat down.
“No.””
Evelyn looked at him sadly.
“I’m sorry.””
“That’s impossible.””
“Your wife thought the same thing.””
Marcus looked at the paper.
“She trusted him.””
“She did.””
Jordan looked between them.
“So Mom found out Uncle Raymond was involved?””
Evelyn nodded.
“And she planned to expose them.””
Marcus swallowed.
“But she never did.””
“No.””
“Why?””
Evelyn looked toward the floor.
“Because someone warned her.””
The room went silent.
Jordan whispered:
“Who?””
Evelyn didn’t answer.
Marcus looked at her.
“Who warned my wife?””
Evelyn’s eyes moved toward Vanessa.
Jordan felt the answer before anyone said it.
Vanessa looked away.
“No.””
Marcus stood.
“Vanessa.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“You warned her?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with frustration.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She looked at Marcus.
“I was trying to stop her from making a mistake.””
Jordan stepped forward.
“You knew?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked everyone.
“I knew.””
Nia’s voice became quiet.
“How long?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Eight years.””
Nobody moved.
Eight years.
Eight years of smiles.
Eight years of family dinners.
Eight years of pretending.
Jordan felt something inside him break.
“All this time…”
Vanessa looked at him.
“I was trying to fix it.””
Jordan laughed bitterly.
“You were trying to throw me out of my house.””
Her expression changed.
Because she knew she couldn’t defend that.
Marcus picked up the photograph.
“What is beneath the foundation?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
Evelyn stared.
“Another lie.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
For the first time, her voice sounded desperate.
“I know what your wife buried.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Then tell me.””
Vanessa looked at Jordan.
Then Nia.
Then Marcus.
May you like
And whispered:
“She buried proof that someone in this family tried to kill her.””
