Chapter 12: The Man Behind the Family Name
The flashlight beam moved across the hallway.
Slowly.
Carefully.
But nobody was there.
Marcus stood in front of Jordan.
“Raymond.””
The voice laughed softly.
“Still protecting everyone, Marcus?””
Jordan felt sick.
Hearing his uncle’s voice inside the house felt wrong.
Impossible.
A man who had hugged him.
A man who had attended every birthday.
A man who had called him family.
Now hiding in the dark.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Where are you?””
No answer.
Then Raymond spoke again.
“Close.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“He’s playing with us.””
Evelyn nodded.
“That’s what he does.””
Jordan looked around.
“Why me?””
The hallway became silent.
Then Raymond answered.
“Because your mother chose you.””
Jordan froze.
Marcus looked toward the voice.
“Leave him out of this.””
Raymond laughed.
“Your wife already put him in the middle.””
Jordan held the notebook tighter.
“What does that mean?””
Raymond didn’t answer.
Instead, the lights suddenly returned.
Everyone looked around.
The hallway was empty.
Then Marcus noticed something.
The property document was gone.
Jordan’s heart dropped.
“He took it.””
Marcus ran downstairs.
Everyone followed.
The living room was empty.
The coffee table was clear.
The deed.
The photographs.
The recorder.
Gone.
Only one thing remained.
A note.
Marcus picked it up.
He read it.
His face became furious.
“What?””
He handed it to Jordan.
The handwriting was Raymond’s.
“Thank you for finding it for me.””
Jordan stared.
“He wanted us to find everything.””
Evelyn nodded.
“Yes.””
“He was never searching.””
Vanessa whispered:
“He was waiting.””
Marcus looked at her.
“For what?””
Vanessa looked at Jordan.
“For Jordan to unlock the box.””
The words hit him.
Jordan looked at the empty space where the metal box had been.
“My mom knew.””
“Yes,” Vanessa said.
“She knew Raymond couldn’t open it.””
“Why?””
“Because the box required two things.””
Marcus frowned.
“What?””
“The key.””
Vanessa looked at Jordan.
“And your fingerprint.””
Everyone froze.
Jordan looked at his hands.
“My fingerprint?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Your mother set it up years ago.””
Nia stepped closer.
“She planned for Jordan.””
Evelyn looked sad.
“She planned for the one person Raymond would underestimate.””
Jordan felt overwhelmed.
His mother had known.
She had built a path.
A path that led directly to him.
Marcus grabbed his phone.
“I’m calling the police.””
This time, nobody stopped him.
But before he could dial, Jordan’s phone buzzed.
Everyone looked.
Unknown number.
Jordan stared.
“Don’t answer.””
Marcus said it immediately.
But Jordan already knew.
The message appeared.
One sentence.
“Your mother left you one more thing.””
Then another message arrived.
A photo.
Jordan opened it.
His breath stopped.
It was a picture of a room.
A small room.
One he recognized.
His mother’s old office.
But the shocking part was not the room.
It was the person standing inside.
A person everyone thought was gone.
Nia whispered:
“No…”
Marcus looked at the screen.
His face turned pale.
Because in the photo, standing beside his wife’s old desk…
was Daniel.
The man who disappeared eight years ago.

And beneath the photo was a message:
“Ask him why your mother was really afraid.””
