Chapter 5: The Sister My Mother Hid

Evelyn Carter stepped into the living room slowly.

She did not look like someone arriving for a surprise visit.

She looked like someone entering a place she had once lost.

Her eyes moved across the room.

The white sofa.

The family photos.

The coffee table.

The small details that told the story of a family she had never been allowed to be part of.

Jordan watched her carefully.

“You’re my mom’s sister?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“Yes.””

“How come I never heard about you?””

Pain crossed her face.

A quiet kind of pain.

The kind people carry for years.

“Because your mother thought keeping you away from me would protect you.””

Nia immediately stepped forward.

“Protect us from what?””

Evelyn looked at her.

“From the truth.””

Marcus closed the door.

“Evelyn, you need to explain.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

Her eyes went to the document.

“Because we don’t have much time.””

Jordan hated that sentence.

Everyone who knew something kept saying things like that.

Not enough time.

Too dangerous.

Too late.

But nobody explained anything.

“What truth?”” Jordan asked.

Evelyn looked at him.

“Your mother didn’t die peacefully believing everything was fine.””

The words hit hard.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Careful.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“I’m not trying to hurt them.””

“Then tell me exactly what happened.””

Evelyn placed the old photograph on the table.

Jordan picked it up.

It showed his mother when she was younger.

Standing beside Evelyn.

And another person.

Vanessa.

Jordan’s eyes widened.

“Vanessa knew my mom before?””

Evelyn nodded.

“They were friends.””

Nia stared.

“Friends?””

“Yes.””

Marcus looked shocked.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“Because Vanessa made sure nobody did.””

Jordan looked at the photo again.

Three women.

Three lives connected long before he was born.

“What happened between them?””

Evelyn sat down.

“Your mother discovered something.””

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“About Vanessa?””

Evelyn nodded.

“She found out Vanessa had been using family properties to secure loans.””

Marcus looked at the deed.

Jordan saw the realization hit him.

“The house.””

Evelyn nodded.

“Your mother’s house was the last one.””

Nia looked confused.

“But this house was Dad’s and Mom’s.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“Legally, yes.””

She pointed at the document.

“But there was another agreement.””

Marcus picked it up.

“The signature.””

Evelyn nodded.

“Vanessa convinced your mother to sign papers she thought were harmless.””

Jordan stared.

“Why would Mom trust her?””

Evelyn looked down.

“Because Vanessa was very good at pretending to be family.””

The sentence made Jordan think about every holiday.

Every dinner.

Every fake smile.

Every moment Vanessa acted like she cared.

Marcus looked angry.

“Why didn’t your sister tell me?””

Evelyn was quiet.

Then she said:

“Because she was afraid you would do exactly what you’re doing now.””

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

“Confront Vanessa.””

Jordan looked at her.

“Why would that be bad?””

Evelyn turned toward him.

“Because Vanessa does not fight fair.””

The room went quiet.

Nia looked toward the door.

“She already tried to kick Jordan out.””

Evelyn nodded.

“She knew the deed had been found.””

Marcus stood.

“Where is she now?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“She’s not running.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means she expected you to find it.””

Jordan felt a cold wave move through him.

“She wanted us to find it?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Evelyn looked at the document.

“Because the deed isn’t the thing she’s afraid of.””

Marcus stared.

“Then what is?””

Evelyn reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small envelope.

Older.

Yellowed.

The paper looked fragile.

Jordan recognized the handwriting immediately.

His mother’s.

“I was supposed to give this to you if the deed was ever opened.””

Marcus didn’t take it.

He looked at Evelyn.

“You had this the whole time?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because your wife made me promise.””

Marcus’s voice became sharper.

“She died eight months ago.””

Evelyn nodded.

“And I waited because she told me not to trust anyone until Vanessa showed her true intentions.””

Jordan looked at the envelope.

His mother had planned this.

Every step.

Every secret.

Every warning.

Evelyn handed it to Marcus.

He opened it carefully.

Inside was another note.

Only one paragraph.

Marcus read silently.

Then his hands began to shake.

Nia noticed.

“Dad?””

Marcus looked up.

His eyes moved from Jordan to Nia.

Then to Evelyn.

“What?””

Jordan asked.

Marcus swallowed.

“Your mother wrote that if Vanessa ever tried to take this house…”

He stopped.

“Dad?””

Marcus looked at the note again.

“She said the house was never the real target.””

A silence filled the room.

Jordan felt his heartbeat increase.

“Then what was?””

Before Marcus could answer, the front door suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

Vanessa stood there.

Nobody heard her come back.

She looked at Evelyn.

Then at the note in Marcus’s hand.

Her expression changed.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Recognition.

“You.””

Evelyn stood.

“Yes.””

Vanessa stepped inside.

“How are you alive?””

Jordan froze.

Marcus looked between them.

“What did you just say?””

Vanessa realized her mistake.

Too late.

Evelyn stared at her.

May you like

And quietly said:

“You told everyone I was dead.””
