Chapter 6: The Lie That Survived Eight Years
Nobody spoke.
The room felt frozen.
Jordan looked at Vanessa.
Then at Evelyn.
Then back at Vanessa.
The question was obvious.
Why had Vanessa believed Evelyn was dead?
And why had she lied about it?
Marcus’s voice broke the silence.
“Vanessa.””
She didn’t answer.
“Explain.””
Vanessa looked at Evelyn.
Her face had lost all the confidence she carried earlier.
“She shouldn’t be here.””
Evelyn laughed softly.
“That’s your explanation?””
Jordan felt anger rising.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
Jordan stepped forward.
“You don’t get to do that.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Do what?””
“Act like everyone else is the problem.””
His voice shook.
“But you’re the one who came into our house and told me to leave.””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“You don’t understand.””
“No,” Jordan replied.
“I don’t. Because nobody tells me anything.””
The words hit harder than he expected.
Marcus looked at his son.
Then at Vanessa.
“He’s right.””
Vanessa looked hurt for a moment.
Then angry.
“Marcus, you need to listen to me.””
“I’ve listened for years.””
His voice was quiet.
“Now it’s your turn.””
Evelyn moved toward the coffee table.
“She was always good at controlling the story.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“You disappeared.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“No. You made sure everyone believed I did.””
Nia looked shocked.
“How?””
Evelyn looked at Vanessa.
“Tell them.””
Vanessa stayed silent.
“Tell them how you told my family I left the country.””
Marcus stared.
“What?””
Evelyn continued.
“Tell them how you told your husband I wanted nothing to do with his family.””
Jordan looked at his father.
“You knew about her?””
Marcus shook his head slowly.
“No.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Evelyn, stop.””
“Why? Because the truth makes you uncomfortable?””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Because you don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Evelyn smiled sadly.
“I know exactly what I’m talking about.””
She pointed toward the property document.
“I know why you needed that deed.””
Marcus picked it up.
“Tell me.””
Vanessa looked at him.
For a moment, Jordan thought she might finally admit everything.
Instead, she said:
“You really want to hear it?””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
Vanessa looked around the room.
At the family photos.
At Jordan.
At Nia.
Then back at Marcus.
“Your wife wasn’t who you thought she was.””
Jordan immediately stepped forward.
“Don’t talk about my mom like that.””
Vanessa ignored him.
“She kept secrets.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“Secrets to protect them.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“You always believed you were the hero.””
“No,” Evelyn replied.
“I believed your sister deserved the truth.””
Marcus looked between them.
“My wife trusted you both.””
The sentence stopped them.
Because it was true.
Two women connected to his wife.
Two women carrying pieces of a story he never knew existed.
Marcus placed the deed on the table.
“What is the real reason Vanessa wants this house?””
Nobody answered.
Then Evelyn walked toward the document.
She pointed to the signature.
“Because this signature isn’t the important part.””
Marcus frowned.
“What do you mean?””
Evelyn looked at Jordan.
“Your mother knew Vanessa would try to make you believe the house was about money.””
Jordan swallowed.
“Then what was it about?””
Evelyn reached into her bag again.
She pulled out a small photograph.
An old photograph.
She placed it beside the deed.
Jordan looked down.
It showed the house.
But something was different.
Behind the photo, written in his mother’s handwriting, were five words:
“Look beneath the foundation.””
Marcus stared.
“The foundation?””
Evelyn nodded.
“Your mother hid something under this house.””
Vanessa suddenly moved.
Fast.
She grabbed the photograph.
Everyone reacted.
“Vanessa!”” Marcus shouted.
But she was already holding it.
Her face was pale.
She looked at the words.
Then whispered:
“She found it.””
Jordan stepped back.
“Found what?””
Vanessa looked at him.
And for the first time, there was no anger in her eyes.
Only panic.
Because whatever was hidden beneath the house…
She was terrified Jordan would discover it.
Marcus reached for the photograph.
Vanessa pulled it away.
“Wait.””
Nobody moved.
Then Vanessa looked at Marcus.
And said the sentence that changed everything.
“Your wife didn’t hide something under the house.””
May you like
She looked at Jordan.
“She hid someone’s name.””
