Chapter 11: The Car That Was Never Destroyed

The parking area behind the ballroom was surrounded by police lights.

The ceremony guests stood behind a barrier, whispering.

Nobody understood how a family celebration had turned into an investigation.

Noah stayed between Renee and Elijah.

Neither parent let go of him.

Not even for a second.

The vehicle sat under the lights.

Old.

Damaged.

Familiar.

Renee stared at it from a distance.

Her body reacted before her mind did.

Her breathing changed.

Her hands became cold.

Elijah noticed.

“Renee.””

She didn’t answer.

He gently touched her shoulder.

“You don’t have to go closer.””

She looked at him.

“Yes, I do.””

Marcus stood beside them.

“You’re sure?””

Renee nodded.

“That’s the car.””

Elijah looked at the vehicle.

“The police report said it was destroyed.””

Marcus’s expression darkened.

“Then the report was false.””

Vanessa stood several feet away.

Quiet.

For once, nobody was watching her.

Nobody was accusing her.

She looked small.

Lost.

Elijah noticed.

“Why are you here?””

Vanessa looked up.

“What?””

“You knew more than you told me.””

She swallowed.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at Noah.

“Because I was scared.””

Elijah stared.

“Of what?””

Vanessa’s eyes moved toward the car.

“Of what would happen if I told the truth.””

Renee stepped closer.

“You knew someone was after us.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

Noah looked at her.

“Then why did you stay?””

The question hurt her.

“I thought I could fix it.””

Noah frowned.

“You hurt us.””

Vanessa looked down.

“I know.””

The honesty surprised everyone.

Elijah looked away.

He wanted to hate her.

Maybe he should.

But he also remembered the woman who had helped him raise Noah.

The same woman who had lied.

Both things were true.

Marcus approached the vehicle.

“Everyone stay back.””

He opened the door carefully.

Inside was nothing unusual.

Until he looked under the driver’s seat.

He froze.

“What?””

Elijah moved closer.

Marcus pulled out a small bag.

Inside was a second recorder.

Renee’s face changed.

“No.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

“There was only supposed to be one.””

Elijah looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

Renee stared at the recorder.

“It means someone wanted two people to hear two different truths.””

Marcus turned it over.

A label was attached.

Not a name.

A date.

The same date as the crash.

Noah looked up.

“Another recording?””

Marcus nodded.

He pressed play.

A voice came through.

A voice everyone recognized.

Vanessa.

“No.””

She stepped backward.

“That’s not possible.””

The recording began.

“I know what I’m about to do is wrong.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Elijah stared.

The recording continued.

“But I don’t know what else to do.””

Renee looked at Vanessa.

The voice continued.

“I can’t protect them if I don’t make them believe I’m the enemy.””

Nobody moved.

Vanessa started crying.

Elijah looked at her.

“What did you do?””

The recording continued.

“I need them to hate me.””

Noah stared.

“Why?””

The voice answered.

“Because if they trust me, they’ll die.””

The recorder clicked off.

Silence.

Vanessa looked at everyone.

Especially Noah.

“I was trying to keep you alive.””

Elijah looked at her.

“By destroying us?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“By making them think I was the problem.””

Renee looked at the recorder.

“She knew.””

Marcus nodded.

“She was pretending.””

Elijah looked furious.

“And you let me hate you?””

Vanessa wiped her tears.

“What choice did I have?””

Renee stepped forward.

“Who threatened you?””

Vanessa looked toward the dark parking lot.

Then whispered:

“The person who knew everything.””

Marcus watched her carefully.

“Who?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then said:

“Someone you all trusted.””

The wind moved through the parking area.

Noah held his mother tighter.

Elijah looked around.

“Who?””

Vanessa looked at Renee.

And whispered:

“Your best friend.””

Renee froze.

Because there was only one person who had been there from the beginning.

One person who helped search for her.

One person who claimed to want justice.

Renee whispered the name.

May you like

And Elijah’s face changed.

“No.””
