Chapter 5: The Secret She Buried
The ceremony ended without anyone announcing it.
No closing speech.
No applause.
No photographs.
The award that was supposed to celebrate Noah’s courage sat forgotten on the stage.
The ballroom had become a courtroom without a judge.
Everyone was waiting for someone to tell the truth.
Elijah stood near the front row, holding the documents Marcus brought.
He had read them three times.
And each time, they hurt more.
“You signed papers in my name.””
His voice was quiet.
Vanessa stood across from him.
“I didn’t forge anything.””
Elijah looked up.
“Then explain it.””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Renee watched her.
“You can’t.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“You think you won?””
“No.””
Renee held Noah closer.
“I think my son deserves the truth.””
Noah looked at his mother.
“Why did you leave?””
The question changed the entire room.
Renee closed her eyes.
Because this was the question she had feared most.
Not the recording.
Not Vanessa.
Not Elijah.
Noah.
She knelt in front of him.
“When the crash happened, I woke up somewhere I didn’t know.””
Noah listened carefully.
“I didn’t know where I was. I didn’t know who I could trust.””
“Why didn’t you call Dad?””
Renee looked down.
“I tried.””
Elijah looked at her.
“You did?””
“Yes.””
Her voice shook.
“Many times.””
Elijah’s expression changed.
“But I never got anything.””
Renee looked toward Marcus.
Marcus lowered his head.
That answer said enough.
Noah looked between them.
“Someone stopped you?””
Renee nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
A quiet moment passed.
Then Vanessa spoke.
“You expect everyone to believe that?””
Renee stood.
“I expect my son to believe that I never abandoned him.””
Vanessa looked away.
Elijah noticed.
“What are you hiding?””
Vanessa looked back.
“Nothing.””
Marcus gave a bitter smile.
“You always say that.””
Elijah turned to him.
“You keep talking like you know her.””
Marcus didn’t answer.
That bothered Elijah more than anything.
“Who are you?””
Marcus looked at Renee.
She nodded slightly.
Like she was giving permission.
Marcus finally spoke.
“I worked on the investigation.””
Elijah frowned.
“What investigation?””
“The one nobody told you existed.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
Marcus continued.
“After the crash, evidence disappeared.””
Renee looked at him.
“You found it.””
“Yes.””
Elijah looked confused.
“Why didn’t you come to me?””
Marcus looked at him.
“Because every time I got close to the truth, someone moved faster.””
A phone buzzed.
Everyone looked down.
It was Vanessa’s phone.
She checked the screen.
Her expression changed instantly.
Renee noticed.
“Who is it?””
Vanessa locked the screen.
“Nobody.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Show them.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“No.””
Elijah reached out.
“Give me the phone.””
She hesitated.
That hesitation answered everything.
Elijah took it.
The screen was still unlocked.
A message appeared.
Unknown number.
*You were told to keep her gone. Fix this.*
Elijah read it.
Then looked at Vanessa.
His face showed disbelief.
“No.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Elijah…”
“No.””
He stepped back.
“Tell me this isn’t what it looks like.””
Vanessa whispered.
“I was trying to protect us.””
Renee stared.
“Protect who?””
Vanessa looked at Noah.
And that made Renee’s blood run cold.
“You were protecting Noah?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I loved him.””
Noah stepped backward.
The words hurt him more than anger would have.
“You love me?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Yes.””
“Then why did you lie?””
She had no answer.
Because there wasn’t one.
A sudden noise came from outside the ballroom.
A loud crash.
Everyone turned.
Marcus moved toward the door.
“Stay here.””
Renee grabbed Noah.
“What was that?””
Marcus looked through the glass.
His face changed.
“The person who sent that message…”
He paused.
Elijah stepped closer.
“Who?””
Marcus slowly turned.
“He’s here.””
The doors shook.
Someone was trying to open them.
Noah held onto his mother’s arm.
Vanessa stared at the door.
May you like
And whispered:
“He found me.””
