Chapter 7: The Recording That Changed Everything
The recorder clicked.
For a moment, there was only silence.
Not peaceful silence.
The kind that comes before something breaks.
Noah stood beside Renee, holding her hand tightly. Elijah stared at the small device like it contained the answer to every question he had been afraid to ask.
Vanessa didn’t move.
She already knew.
Everyone else was waiting to find out.
Then the voice played.
“I don’t know if anyone will ever hear this…”
Elijah’s face changed.
His breathing stopped.
Because he knew that voice.
It wasn’t a stranger.
It wasn’t the man standing across the room.
It was his own.
A recording of himself.
But his memory had no place for it.
The ballroom filled with whispers.
Elijah looked at Renee.
“What is this?””
Renee didn’t answer.
The recording continued.
“If something happens to me, Noah needs to know the truth.””
Elijah stepped backward.
“No.””
His voice was barely audible.
Vanessa’s eyes moved from the recorder to Elijah.
“Turn it off.””
Nobody listened.
The recording played.
“I found the documents. I know someone changed the accident report.””
Elijah covered his mouth.
He remembered the day.
The arguments.
The fear.
The strange phone calls.
But not this.
Not recording a message.
Renee looked at him carefully.
“You don’t remember making it.””
Elijah looked at her.
“No.””
The voice continued.
“I know they’re watching me.””
The stranger near the door smiled.
“You remember now?””
Elijah turned toward him.
“What did you do?””
The man didn’t answer.
The recording continued.
“If Renee doesn’t come back, someone needs to protect Noah.””
Noah looked up.
“Dad?””
Elijah looked at his son.
The pain in his eyes was impossible to hide.
“I don’t understand.””
Renee stepped closer.
“I found this after the crash.””
Elijah shook his head.
“No. If I recorded this, why don’t I remember?””
Marcus answered quietly.
“Because you weren’t supposed to.””
Everyone looked at him.
Marcus continued.
“Someone drugged you before the crash.””
Elijah stared.
“What?””
“Your memory wasn’t lost by accident.””
The room went silent.
Vanessa whispered:
“No.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You knew.””
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“I knew he was struggling.””
“No.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“You knew someone was manipulating him.””
Elijah looked at Vanessa.
“Tell me he’s lying.””
Vanessa looked away.
That was all the answer he needed.
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“No, Vanessa.””
She finally looked at him.
“Elijah, listen to me.””
“Did you know?””
She hesitated.
“Yes.””
The word destroyed the last bit of trust in his face.
Noah looked frightened.
“Dad?””
Elijah immediately turned toward him.
He forced himself to soften.
“Buddy, go with your mom for a second.””
Noah didn’t move.
“I want to know.””
Renee looked down.
“Elijah…”
“No.””
Noah’s eyes filled with tears.
“Everybody keeps saying I’m too young.””
He looked around the room.
“But I’m the one who lost my mom.””
Nobody had an answer.
The stranger watched with satisfaction.
“This is what happens when people hide the truth.””
Renee turned toward him.
“You’re enjoying this.””
“I’m enjoying watching everyone finally see what they are.””
Marcus moved toward him.
“You’re leaving.””
The man smiled.
“You think you can stop me?””
Before Marcus could respond, Elijah spoke.
“Who are you?””
The stranger looked at him.
“You really don’t remember.””
Elijah’s expression hardened.
“Remember what?””
The man stepped closer.
“We met before Renee disappeared.””
Renee froze.
“What?””
Elijah looked confused.
“I’ve never seen him.””
The stranger laughed.
“That’s because someone made sure you forgot.””
The room became colder.
Vanessa looked terrified.
Renee looked at Elijah.
“Who is he?””
Nobody answered.
Then the stranger said:
“Ask your husband what happened three days before the crash.””
Elijah’s face changed.
A small flash of confusion.
Then fear.
Because somewhere deep inside his memory…
Something moved.
A door.
A voice.
A conversation he couldn’t fully reach.
He grabbed his head.
“No.””
Renee moved toward him.
“Elijah?””
He looked at her.
“I remember…”
Everyone froze.
Vanessa whispered:
“Elijah, don’t.””
He stared at her.
“I remember you were there.””
The ballroom went silent.
May you like
The stranger smiled.
“Finally.””
