Chapter 13: The Memory Noah Hid

The phone remained silent after Daniel’s question.

Everyone looked at Noah.

Not because they expected him to answer.

Because they were afraid that he could.

Noah stood between his parents, his small hand wrapped around Renee’s fingers.

His face had changed.

The confident little boy who had demanded the truth earlier was gone.

Now he looked like a child trapped inside a memory he didn’t understand.

Elijah lowered himself to Noah’s level.

“Buddy.””

Noah didn’t look at him.

“Do you remember something?””

A tear rolled down Noah’s cheek.

“I don’t know.””

Renee immediately knelt.

“You don’t have to say anything you’re not ready to say.””

But Noah shook his head.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“I think I should.””

The adults listened.

Because this was Noah’s story.

Not theirs.

Noah looked at the ground.

“I remember the night Mom disappeared.””

Renee closed her eyes.

Every word hurt.

Noah continued.

“I remember waking up because I heard people arguing.””

Elijah froze.

“You were awake?””

Noah nodded.

“I was little, but I remember.””

The parking lot became completely still.

“I heard Dad yelling.””

Elijah looked confused.

“At who?””

Noah looked toward the road.

“Daniel.””

Nobody spoke.

Renee’s expression changed.

Noah continued.

“Dad said he knew someone was lying.””

Marcus exchanged a look with Renee.

Noah swallowed.

“Then Daniel saw me.””

Elijah’s face changed.

“What?””

Noah nodded slowly.

“He came into my room.””

Renee covered her mouth.

“No.””

“He told me everything was okay.””

Noah looked at his mother.

“He told me not to be scared.””

His voice became smaller.

“But he had blood on his shirt.””

The entire group went silent.

Elijah stepped back.

“Blood?””

Noah nodded.

“I thought it was ketchup.””

A painful silence followed.

Because children always found ways to make terrible things seem harmless.

Renee hugged him.

“You should have told me.””

Noah cried.

“I forgot.””

Marcus spoke gently.

“You didn’t forget.””

Everyone looked at him.

He continued.

“You buried it.””

Noah wiped his face.

“Why?””

Marcus looked at him.

“Because your brain was trying to protect you.””

Daniel’s voice was still connected through the phone.

Nobody had noticed.

Until he spoke again.

“Very impressive.””

Everyone froze.

Daniel laughed softly.

“Even now, you’re all using the same language.””

Elijah grabbed the phone.

“Where are you?””

Daniel ignored him.

“Noah, you were always the smartest person in that house.””

Renee’s anger returned.

“Don’t talk to him.””

Daniel continued.

“You remembered what everyone else forgot.””

Noah stepped closer to his mother.

Daniel’s voice became colder.

“And that’s why your mother had to disappear.””

Elijah shouted:

“Stop.””

Daniel sighed.

“You still don’t understand.””

The call suddenly disconnected.

Everyone stood in silence.

Then Marcus looked at Renee.

“We need to find him.””

Renee nodded.

“But first, Noah needs to know something.””

Noah looked at her.

“What?””

She held his face gently.

“You didn’t cause any of this.””

His eyes filled.

“I should have told someone.””

“No.””

Her voice was firm.

“You were a child.””

Elijah stepped closer.

“And I should have protected you.””

Noah looked at him.

Elijah swallowed.

“I spent all this time thinking I failed because I couldn’t save your mother.””

His voice cracked.

“But I forgot I still had you to save.””

Noah hugged him.

For the first time that night, father and son held onto each other.

Vanessa watched quietly.

Renee noticed.

“You helped him.””

Vanessa looked away.

“I tried.””

“You knew Daniel was dangerous.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Because Daniel threatened Noah.””

Everyone froze.

Elijah turned.

“What did he say?””

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“He told me if I exposed him, Noah would be next.””

Renee’s anger softened.

Because suddenly Vanessa’s choices made sense.

Wrong.

Painful.

But understandable.

“You should have trusted us.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I know.””

Marcus looked at the group.

“We can deal with the past later.””

He looked toward the city lights.

“Right now, Daniel has the original evidence.””

Renee looked at the recorder.

“And he has a reason to come back.””

Elijah frowned.

“What reason?””

Renee stared at the road.

“He wants the last thing he never got.””

“What?””

She answered quietly.

“Noah’s memory.””

A message arrived on Marcus’s phone.

He checked it.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

Renee looked at him.

Marcus turned the screen around.

A location.

May you like

And one sentence.

*Bring Noah. Come alone.*
