Chapter 14: The Truth They Buried
The abandoned building stood at the edge of the city.
A place forgotten by everyone except the people who needed to hide things.
Renee stared at it from the car.
“This is where he brought me.””
Elijah looked at her.
“When?””
“The night before the crash.””
Everyone became quiet.
Marcus looked at her.
“You remember now?””
Renee nodded.
Pieces were returning.
Not all at once.
But enough.
“I came here because Daniel said he had proof.””
Elijah looked toward the building.
“And?””
“He did.””
Renee touched the recorder.
“He showed me documents.””
She looked at Noah.
“Documents that proved he had been stealing from Elijah’s company.””
Elijah closed his eyes.
“Daniel.””
Renee nodded.
“He knew I found out.””
Marcus looked serious.
“Then why didn’t he kill you?””
Renee looked at him.
“Because he needed something.””
“What?””
“My silence.””
Elijah looked confused.
“But you survived.””
Renee nodded.
“Because someone else interrupted.””
Nobody spoke.
Marcus looked at her.
“Who?””
Renee looked at the building.
“I don’t know.””
The car doors opened.
They stepped outside.
Noah held Elijah’s hand.
Renee walked beside them.
For the first time, the family moved together.
Not because everything was fixed.
Because they finally knew who they were fighting.
The building door was unlocked.
Inside was darkness.
Then a voice echoed.
“I knew you would come.””
Daniel stepped into view.
Older than the photos.
More tired.
But still calm.
Renee stared.
“Why?””
Daniel smiled sadly.
“Because you always believed people could be saved.””
Elijah stepped forward.
“You threatened my son.””
Daniel looked at Noah.
“I protected him.””
Elijah’s anger exploded.
“You don’t get to say that.””
Daniel looked at Noah.
“Ask him.””
Everyone froze.
Noah looked confused.
“Ask who?””
Daniel pointed at Elijah.
“Ask your father what happened after the crash.””
Elijah went still.
Renee looked at him.
“Elijah?””
Daniel smiled.
“Tell them.””
Elijah shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel laughed.
“That’s the problem.””
He walked toward a table.
On it was the original recorder.
And a stack of documents.
“You all think the truth is simple.””
He picked up the recorder.
“It isn’t.””
Marcus moved forward.
Daniel immediately stopped.
“You want this?””
He held up the recorder.
“Then listen.””
He pressed play.
A recording began.
Elijah’s voice.
But different.
Angry.
Desperate.
“I know what you did, Daniel.””
Everyone looked at Elijah.
The recording continued.
“You used my company. You used my family.””
Daniel’s voice answered.
“You don’t understand what you’re involved in.””
The recording stopped.
Elijah looked shocked.
“I remember.””
Renee looked at him.
“What?””
He held his head.
“That night.””
Daniel watched.
“You finally remember.””
Elijah looked at him.
“You weren’t working alone.””
Daniel smiled.
“No.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel continued.
“The person who helped me…”
He looked toward Vanessa.
Vanessa stepped back.
“No.””
Daniel smiled.
“Wasn’t Vanessa.””
Everyone turned.
He looked at Renee.
“Was it?””
Renee’s face changed.
Because suddenly she understood.
The betrayal wasn’t where she thought.
Daniel pressed play again.
A new voice came through.
A woman’s voice.
Everyone recognized it.
Renee.
Her own voice.
“I can’t let him find out.””
Elijah stared.
The recording continued.
“If Elijah knows the truth, he’ll destroy everything.””
Noah looked at his mother.
Renee stepped back.
“No.””
Daniel watched her reaction.
“Now you remember.””
Renee shook her head.
“I didn’t say that.””
Daniel smiled.
“You did.””
The recording continued.
May you like
And the next sentence shattered the room.
“I’m the reason Elijah can’t remember.””
