Chapter 6: The Person Behind The Plan
The ballroom doors opened slowly.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
A shadow appeared in the doorway.
Noah pressed against Renee.
Elijah stepped in front of them.
“Who are you?””
The person didn’t answer immediately.
He simply looked around the room.
At the recorder.
At the documents.
At Vanessa.
Then at Renee.
A strange smile appeared.
Not friendly.
Not surprised.
A smile from someone who believed they still had control.
“You made this much harder than it needed to be.””
Renee’s face hardened.
“You.””
Elijah looked at her.
“You know him?””
Renee didn’t answer.
The stranger walked inside.
Marcus immediately moved forward.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
The man laughed softly.
“And you still think you’re in charge.””
Marcus stopped.
That reaction told Elijah everything.
This man scared him.
The stranger looked at Vanessa.
“You had one job.””
Vanessa looked down.
“I tried.””
“No.””
His voice became colder.
“You failed.””
Noah watched.
He didn’t understand the conversation.
But he understood one thing.
This man was the reason everyone was afraid.
Elijah stepped forward.
“Get away from my family.””
The man looked amused.
“Your family?””
He glanced at Renee.
“Interesting choice of words.””
Renee’s expression changed.
“Don’t.””
The man smiled.
“So you finally told him?””
Elijah looked at Renee.
“Told me what?””
Silence.
Renee looked trapped.
The stranger enjoyed that.
“You should ask your wife what she was really doing the night she disappeared.””
Elijah turned.
“Renee?””
She looked at him.
“I was trying to find out the truth.””
The man laughed.
“Still lying.””
Renee stepped forward.
“You don’t get to rewrite what happened.””
“Don’t I?””
He looked around.
“All these people think you’re the victim.””
He pointed at the recorder.
“But nobody knows what you were searching for.””
Elijah’s voice became sharper.
“What is he talking about?””
Renee looked at the man.
“Stop.””
But he continued.
“She wasn’t just investigating a crash.””
Noah looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
Renee immediately moved toward him.
“Don’t listen.””
The stranger smiled.
“That’s the problem with secrets.””
He looked at Noah.
“Eventually, they learn how to speak.””
Elijah clenched his fists.
“Leave.””
The stranger looked at Vanessa.
“Did you tell him?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
The stranger sighed.
“You were always too emotional.””
Renee stepped between Noah and the man.
“You stay away from my son.””
For the first time, the stranger’s expression changed.
Anger.
“You still think this is about you.””
Renee stared.
“What?””
He leaned slightly forward.
“This was never about taking you away.””
Everyone froze.
The recorder in Renee’s hand felt heavier.
Elijah looked at Marcus.
“What does he mean?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Because he already knew.
The stranger looked directly at Noah.
“It was about making sure nobody ever found out what your mother discovered.””
Noah’s face went pale.
Renee grabbed the recorder.
“You don’t get to scare him.””
The man smiled.
“Play it.””
Everyone looked at him.
Renee froze.
“What?””
He pointed at the recorder.
“You came here to expose Vanessa.””
His eyes moved around the room.
“But you still haven’t played the entire recording.””
Elijah looked at Renee.
“There’s more?””
Renee said nothing.
That silence was enough.
Vanessa stared.
“You knew?””
Renee looked down.
The man smiled.
“Of course she knew.””
Noah looked at his mother.
“Mom?””
Renee’s eyes filled.
“I was trying to protect you.””
The stranger laughed.
“And that’s exactly why you failed.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Enough.””
The stranger ignored him.
“Play the rest.””
Renee held the recorder tightly.
Her hand trembled.
Because she knew what came next.
The first recording had only exposed the threat.
The second part revealed the reason.
Elijah moved closer.
“Renee.””
She looked at him.
“I’m sorry.””
Then she pressed the button.
The recorder clicked.
Everyone waited.
A different voice began to play.
Not the one from before.
A voice nobody expected.
A voice that made Elijah slowly turn toward Vanessa.
Because he recognized it.
And Vanessa realized it too.
Her face went completely white.
May you like
The recording continued.
And the truth that had been buried for a year was finally about to be heard.
