Chapter 4: The Man Who Knew Too Much

The ballroom doors slowly closed behind the stranger.

The sound was small.

But to Noah, it felt louder than the microphone dropping from his hands.

The man stood near the entrance, calm and unreadable. He wore a dark suit that matched the seriousness of his expression. Unlike everyone else in the room, he didn’t look surprised.

He looked like he expected this.

Renee’s grip tightened around Noah’s hand.

“Who are you?”” Elijah demanded.

The man looked at him.

Then at Renee.

“My name is Marcus Hale.””

Noah looked up at his mother.

“Do you know him?””

Renee didn’t answer immediately.

That was the answer.

Elijah noticed.

“You know him.””

Renee looked away.

Marcus took a step forward.

“I didn’t come here to hurt anyone.””

Vanessa let out a quiet laugh.

Nobody expected it.

Especially not Elijah.

“You think that’s funny?”” he asked.

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

“No. I’m just surprised you finally decided to show your face.””

Marcus stared at her.

“And I’m surprised you still pretend you’re innocent.””

The room became tense.

The guests who had planned to attend a simple ceremony were now trapped inside a family secret they never expected to witness.

Elijah looked between them.

“What is going on?””

Nobody answered.

Noah’s voice broke through.

“Why does everyone know things except me?””

The question silenced them.

Renee immediately looked down at him.

“Baby…”

“No.””

Noah pulled his hand back.

“I’m tired of people saying they’re protecting me.””

His eyes moved across the room.

“Everybody says that.””

Elijah’s face softened.

“Noah.””

“You protected me by telling me Mom was dead.””

Elijah flinched.

The words landed harder because they were true.

Renee closed her eyes.

Marcus watched quietly.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Maybe we should leave the child out of this.””

Renee turned sharply.

“Don’t say that like you care about him.””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“I raised him when you weren’t here.””

“And why wasn’t I here?””

Nobody moved.

Renee’s question hung in the air.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“Tell them.””

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

“Don’t tell me what to do.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You still haven’t changed.””

Elijah walked closer.

“Changed from what?””

Marcus looked at him.

“From someone who believes control is the same thing as love.””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“You don’t know anything about this family.””

Marcus looked at Noah.

“I know enough.””

Renee stepped between them.

“Why are you here, Marcus?””

The man reached inside his jacket.

Several guests gasped.

But he only pulled out a folder.

He placed it on the nearest table.

“I came because someone needed to stop this from continuing.””

Elijah looked at the folder.

“What is that?””

“Evidence.””

Vanessa immediately moved.

“No.””

The single word revealed more than she intended.

Elijah noticed.

“Why did you say no?””

Vanessa stopped.

“I mean—because this is insane.””

Marcus opened the folder.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Records.

Renee stared at them.

Her face changed.

“You kept them.””

Marcus looked at her.

“I promised I would.””

Noah looked confused.

“Kept what?””

Renee didn’t answer.

Elijah picked up one of the papers.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

“What is this?””

Nobody spoke.

He looked again.

“This is my signature.””

Renee looked at him.

“Yes.””

Elijah’s hands started shaking.

“But I never signed this.””

The room became completely silent.

Vanessa’s face changed.

For the first time, Elijah saw something he couldn’t explain.

Panic.

“What is it?”” he asked.

Renee stepped closer.

“It’s a transfer agreement.””

Elijah looked up.

“For what?””

Renee stared at Vanessa.

“For Noah’s guardianship.””

The color drained from Elijah’s face.

“What?””

Noah looked at them.

“Guardianship?””

Elijah turned the paper over.

“My son?””

Marcus nodded.

“Someone tried to legally remove you from decision-making.””

Elijah looked at Vanessa.

Slowly.

Carefully.

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Elijah, listen to me.””

“No.””

His voice was louder.

“You knew about this?””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“I can explain.””

Renee laughed quietly.

A painful sound.

“That’s always your answer.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“You don’t know what I did.””

“No,” Renee said.

“I know exactly what you wanted.””

She picked up the recorder.

“You wanted my son.””

Noah looked at Vanessa.

The woman who had tucked him into bed.

The woman who had packed his lunches.

The woman he trusted.

His voice trembled.

“Vanessa?””

She looked at him.

And for one second, her expression softened.

Then it disappeared.

“I did what I thought was necessary.””

Elijah stared.

“Necessary?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“You weren’t thinking clearly after Renee disappeared.””

Renee’s eyes narrowed.

“I disappeared?””

Vanessa ignored her.

“You were broken. You couldn’t make decisions.””

Elijah stepped back.

“You convinced me I couldn’t take care of my own son?””

“I helped you.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“You replaced me.””

Nobody spoke.

Marcus looked toward Renee.

“There’s more.””

Renee looked at him.

“What?””

Marcus hesitated.

That hesitation terrified her.

“What?””

He slowly reached into the folder.

“This is why I came tonight.””

He pulled out another document.

A police report.

Renee stared.

“No.””

Marcus handed it to her.

She read the first line.

Her breathing changed.

Elijah noticed.

“What is it?””

Renee looked up.

And the fear in her eyes returned.

“It says they found the car.””

Noah’s face went pale.

“The crash?””

Renee looked at him.

She immediately regretted letting him hear that.

But it was too late.

Marcus spoke quietly.

“The crash wasn’t an accident.””

Everyone looked at him.

Then he said the one thing nobody expected.

“The car wasn’t supposed to kill Renee.””

Renee froze.

Elijah frowned.

“Then what was it supposed to do?””

Marcus looked directly at Vanessa.

“It was supposed to send a message.””

Vanessa stepped back.

And for the first time, everyone saw it.

She wasn’t just afraid of Renee.

May you like

She was afraid of someone else.

Someone still out there.
