Chapter 3: The Name On The Screen
Noah stared at the phone.
He didn’t understand why everyone suddenly looked terrified.
To him, it was just a message.
Just a name.
But his mother reacted like she had seen a ghost.
Renee slowly reached for the phone.
Her fingers hovered above the screen.
“Mom?””
Noah looked up.
“Who was it?””
She didn’t answer.
Elijah stepped closer.
“Renee.””
His voice was quiet.
“What name did he send?””
Renee looked at him.
And for the first time since she entered the ballroom, she looked afraid.
Not angry.
Not determined.
Afraid.
Vanessa noticed.
That tiny reaction changed everything.
Because Vanessa had been watching Renee carefully.
Waiting for weakness.
And she finally saw it.
“You don’t know everything,” Vanessa said.
Renee looked at her.
“You should stop talking.””
“Why?”” Vanessa asked.
“Because I’m getting close?””
Elijah turned.
“Vanessa.””
She ignored him.
“You walked in here expecting everyone to believe you because you’re Noah’s mother.””
Renee stepped forward.
“And you expected everyone to forget what you did.””
Vanessa smiled slightly.
But there was no warmth in it.
“You still don’t understand.””
The guests exchanged confused looks.
Elijah’s voice hardened.
“Understand what?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You never asked enough questions.””
Elijah looked like the words physically hurt him.
“About what?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Then stopped.
A room full of people waited.
But she chose silence.
Renee picked up the recorder again.
“You heard what was on here.””
Vanessa looked at the device.
“I heard a voice.””
“Everyone heard a voice.””
“Everyone heard a voice they were told to fear.””
Renee stared at her.
“Why are you defending yourself before anyone accused you?””
Vanessa’s expression tightened.
For a moment, she had no answer.
Noah stood between the adults, holding himself tightly.
His award ribbon hung around his neck.
A symbol of courage.
But he felt anything except brave.
“Can someone please tell me what happened?””
His voice broke.
Everyone became quiet.
Renee immediately moved toward him.
“Oh, Noah…”
“No.””
He stepped back.
His eyes filled with tears.
“You all keep saying things I don’t understand.””
He looked at Elijah.
“You said Mom was gone.””
Then Vanessa.
“You said she loved me.””
Then back to Renee.
“You came back and everyone is scared.””
His voice became smaller.
“Why?””
Renee looked devastated.
Because there was no simple answer.
Not anymore.
She knelt in front of him.
“I wanted to come back sooner.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
The question hit her.
Renee looked down.
Because the truth was complicated.
Because the truth was dangerous.
Because there were things she still couldn’t say.
Not yet.
“I was trying to survive.””
Noah wiped his face.
“I thought you left me.””
Renee’s expression broke.
“Never.””
She held his hands.
“Never, ever think that.””
Behind them, Elijah quietly walked toward the ballroom doors.
Renee noticed.
“Where are you going?””
He stopped.
“I need air.””
“No.””
Her voice stopped him.
“You need answers.””
Elijah turned.
“I need to understand why my wife walked back into my life with a recorder accusing the woman who helped raise our son.””
Renee stared.
The words hurt.
But she accepted them.
Because she knew how impossible this looked.
“I know what it looks like.””
Elijah shook his head.
“You don’t.””
A long silence followed.
Then Renee walked toward him.
“I have spent every day thinking about this moment.””
She held up the recorder.
“I imagined you believing me.””
Elijah looked at it.
“But now?””
“Now I see you need proof.””
His eyes softened slightly.
“I do.””
Renee nodded.
“Then I’ll give it to you.””
She pressed a button.
The recorder clicked.
Everyone held their breath.
But before anything played, the ballroom doors opened again.
A man in a dark suit entered.
He looked around the room.
His eyes landed on Renee.
Then Noah.
Then Vanessa.
Vanessa’s face changed instantly.
She recognized him.
Renee saw it.
And that was enough.
The man walked closer.
“Renee,” he said.
The room went silent.
“You weren’t supposed to come back.””
Noah grabbed his mother’s hand.
Elijah stepped forward.
And Vanessa whispered something under her breath.
Something Renee heard.
Something that made her turn pale.
Because Vanessa didn’t say his name.

She said:
“Why are you here?””
