Chapter 2: The Woman Who Was Supposed To Be Gone
The ballroom remained frozen.
Nobody knew whether to leave or stay.
Nobody knew whether they had just witnessed a miracle or the beginning of something much darker.
Noah stood on the stage, staring down at the woman he had spent months mourning.
His mother.
The person he had been told would never walk through a door again.
Renee looked up at him.
The anger in her face softened.
For a second, she wasn’t the woman holding a recorder.
She was just Noah’s mother.
“Noah,” she whispered.
He stepped closer.
“You’re real?””
A painful silence followed.
Renee’s eyes filled.
“Yes, baby.””
Noah climbed down from the stage.
He didn’t run.
He moved slowly, almost like he was afraid she would disappear if he moved too fast.
When he reached her, he touched her arm.
Like he needed proof.
Like he needed to know she wasn’t another dream.
“You came home,” he said.
Renee pulled him into her arms.
The entire ballroom watched.
Even the people who had been whispering moments earlier became silent.
Noah buried his face against her shoulder.
“I waited for you.””
Renee closed her eyes.
“I know.””
Across the room, Elijah looked away.
His face showed guilt, confusion, and pain all at once.
A man near the stage approached him carefully.
“Elijah, what is happening?””
Elijah didn’t answer.
He couldn’t.
Because he didn’t know.
Vanessa stood alone near the front row.
The woman who always seemed prepared.
The woman who always had the perfect response.
Now she had nothing.
One guest finally spoke.
“Vanessa, is that your voice?””
Vanessa looked toward them sharply.
“Of course not.””
Her answer came too quickly.
The room noticed.
Renee noticed.
Elijah noticed.
Vanessa forced herself to breathe.
“This is ridiculous,” she said.
“Someone walks in after being missing and everyone believes whatever story she tells?””
Renee slowly turned.
“You’re worried about my story?””
Vanessa lifted her chin.
“I’m worried about a recording that nobody has verified.””
Renee smiled faintly.
Not because she was happy.
Because she expected this.
“You always did like controlling the room.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“And you always liked creating drama.””
The words hit harder than a shout.
Noah looked between them.
“Stop.””
Everyone looked at him.
His voice was small.
But firm.
“Why are you fighting?””
Neither woman answered.
Elijah walked toward Noah.
“Buddy…”
Noah looked at his father.
“Dad, you said Mom was gone.””
Elijah froze.
“I thought she was.””
“You thought?””
The question broke him.
Elijah lowered his eyes.
“I was told something happened.””
Renee watched him carefully.
“What were you told, Elijah?””
He looked at her.
“I got a call.””
“From who?””
His silence was enough.
Renee’s expression changed.
“You never asked?””
Elijah looked hurt.
“I spent months looking for answers.””
“No,” Renee said quietly.
“You spent months believing the answer someone handed you.””
The room became uncomfortable.
Vanessa stepped in.
“This isn’t the place for this.””
Renee turned.
“You’re right.””
She held up the recorder.
“This is the place for everyone to hear the truth.””
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“You don’t even know what you have.””
Renee looked at her.
“I know exactly what I have.””
Noah watched the adults around him.
He saw something he had never seen before.
Fear.
Not sadness.
Not confusion.
Fear.
A woman from the ceremony committee approached.
“Maybe everyone should take a moment outside.””
Renee shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice carried.
“I spent a year away from my son because someone wanted me gone.””
Elijah’s face changed.
“A year?””
He stepped closer.
“You were alive for a year?””
Renee looked at him.
The question hurt.
“Yes.””
“Where were you?””
The entire room waited.
Renee opened her mouth.
Then stopped.
Her eyes moved to Noah.
She looked at her son standing there, scared and confused.
“I’ll tell him everything.””
She looked back at Elijah.
“But first, I need to know one thing.””
Elijah stared.
“What?””
Renee slowly turned toward Vanessa.
“Did you know?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
The silence was louder than any confession.
Then suddenly, Noah’s phone, which was resting on the stage, began to ring.
Everyone looked up.
Noah walked toward it.
The screen showed a name.
A name that made Renee’s face change instantly.
She rushed forward.
“Noah, don’t answer that.””
But Noah had already picked it up.
“Hello?””
A voice spoke from the other end.
Noah’s expression changed.
“Who is this?””
Renee reached for the phone.
But the caller said one sentence before she could take it.
A sentence that made Renee stop completely.
“Ask your mother why she never told you what really happened that night.””
The call ended.
And on the screen appeared a new message.
May you like
One word.
A name.
