Chapter 12: The Friend Who Was Never Loyal
Nobody wanted to believe the name.
Because some betrayals are impossible not because they are complicated.
But because they are personal.
Renee stood frozen beneath the flashing lights.
Her lips barely moved.
“Daniel.””
Elijah stared.
“No.””
Marcus looked at both of them.
“You know him?””
Renee nodded slowly.
“He was my closest friend.””
Vanessa looked down.
“He was mine too.””
The words shocked Elijah.
“You knew Daniel?””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Everyone knew Daniel.””
Nobody answered.
Because that was true.
Daniel Brooks had been part of their lives for years.
He had stood beside Elijah during business meetings.
He had helped Renee after Noah was born.
He had attended birthdays.
Holidays.
Family dinners.
He was the person everyone trusted.
The person nobody questioned.
Marcus looked at the evidence bag.
“He had access.””
Elijah looked at him.
“Access to what?””
“Everything.””
The answer made him uncomfortable.
Marcus continued.
“He knew the family schedule. He knew the company records. He knew where Renee would be.””
Renee looked at the ground.
“And he knew about the investigation.””
Elijah looked at her.
“What investigation?””
She closed her eyes.
“The one I started before the crash.””
The truth finally started coming together.
Renee looked at Noah.
“Your father’s company had missing money.””
Elijah frowned.
“What?””
“I found transfers.””
He stared.
“From my accounts?””
“Yes.””
His face changed.
“Daniel?””
Renee nodded.
“I suspected him.””
Vanessa whispered:
“He knew.””
Elijah looked at her.
“You knew too?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I knew he was dangerous.””
The answer confused him.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Because he already knew you didn’t trust me.””
The words hurt.
Because they were true.
Elijah had trusted Daniel.
He had doubted Vanessa.
Marcus received a notification on his phone.
He checked it.
Then his expression changed.
“What?””
Renee looked at him.
He turned the screen around.
A security camera image.
A man leaving the ballroom.
Daniel.
Everyone froze.
“He was here.””
Marcus nodded.
“He watched everything.””
Elijah looked furious.
“Where is he?””
Marcus looked at the image.
“He left five minutes ago.””
Renee stepped forward.
“Why would he come here?””
Nobody answered.
Then Noah spoke.
“Maybe he wanted to see if Mom came back.””
Everyone looked at him.
The innocence of his answer made it worse.
Because Noah understood something adults missed.
Daniel wasn’t surprised.
He was waiting.
Marcus zoomed in on the image.
Something was in Daniel’s hand.
A small object.
A recorder.
Renee’s eyes widened.
“No.””
Elijah looked at her.
“What?””
She whispered:
“He has the original.””
Marcus looked confused.
“The original what?””
Renee touched the recorder she had brought.
“The one that proves everything.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Then what do we have?””
Renee looked down.
A copy.
A distraction.
Daniel had always been ahead.
Elijah closed his eyes.
“We were never exposing him.””
Marcus looked at him.
“No.””
He looked toward the road where Daniel disappeared.
“He was allowing you to think you were.””
A phone began ringing.
Everyone turned.
It wasn’t Vanessa’s.
It wasn’t Elijah’s.
It was Noah’s.
Renee immediately grabbed it.
The screen showed an unknown number.
She answered.
“Who is this?””
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then a familiar voice replied.
Calm.
Confident.
Almost gentle.
“Hello, Renee.””
Her face changed.
Because she knew.
Daniel.
Elijah stepped closer.
“What does he want?””
Renee put the phone on speaker.
Daniel’s voice filled the night air.
“You’re looking for answers.””
Nobody moved.
Daniel continued.
“But before you find them…”
A pause.
“Ask Noah what he remembers from the night I saved him.””
Renee froze.
Elijah looked at Noah.
Noah’s face changed.
Because for the first time…
He remembered something.
Something from the night of the crash.
May you like
Something he had never told anyone.
And it started with Daniel saying his name.
